Netizens are outraged and appalled at staff of the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) being forced to line along Thomson Road on Wednesday to pay their last respects to Mrs Lee as her cortege passed by.
An internal memo from an Assistant Director of MCYS Human Resource Division had asked all staff of MCYS/SLF Building to line up along Thomson Road on the afternoon of 6 October 2010 and to leave the buildings by 3.45pm.
It even asked MCYS staff to be “solemn” and “bow” their heads as a form of respect as the cortege passes by and to wear clothes with “sombre” colors.
Tan Wen Fa felt that MCYS staff should be given a choice not to attend:
“Directive” email SHOULD CLEARLY Indicate /advise that civil servants have a CHOICE to Attend or NOT to show respect to ‘exceptional lady’ (According to Some sources), because IF it is not mentioned EXPLICITLY civil servants do have a choice, ALL would of course TAKE IT as Mandatory because is from their Ministry’s HR.”
Ivan Lu concurred:
“MCYS should just have allowed time off for their staff instead of mandating people attend. If it were some high ranking MCYS servant, or the minister himself then it would be acceptable. The way they’ve done it makes it seem coercive, reminds me of how not too long ago some primary school forced their students to attend the YOG flame marathon in the rain. Come on these staff are adults, and it’s enough if MCYS announces time off for those who want to go instead of telling them all to attend. Come to think of it, is there really a need to do so? If MCYS hadn’t made it compulsory, only a few civil servants would turn up? What does that tell you about the level of respect Mdm Kwa commanded amongst them?”Ang K Y felt the entire fracas is a waste of time:
“I think this is a total waste of productive man-hour. All of MCYS staff minus the security guards all went down to Thomson Road to stand there and wait, Vivian Balakrishnan must be aware of this and have to explain why civil servants were made to stand under the hot sun waiting, they have nothing better to do is it?”
In the meantime, there were no comments from Dr Vivian Balakrishnan or MCYS on what happened exactly on that fateful afternoon.
