Law Minister: unfair to cast foreigners as the villains

MIDWAY through an hour-long dialogue with Law Minister K. Shanmugam on Sunday, 58-year-old Wee Kai Fatt stood up and gave voice to the claims of many coffeeshop pundits here.

The senior engineer complained about the foreigner-fuelled population boom, saying he was shocked when he heard there were five million people living in Singapore. This influx of foreigners, he added, has caused HDB home prices to skyrocket.

Taking it all in, Mr Shanmugam took pains to clarify what he said were several misconceptions in Mr Wee's statement.

The Law Minister's key message: It is unfair to cast foreigners as the villains driving up the prices of HDB flats.

Speaking at the end of his three-hour visit to Yew Tee constituency in Hong Kah GRC, he said: 'The first misconception is that somehow there are five million people and that's putting pressure on all of us. It doesn't.'

Of the five million, 3.2 million are citizens and roughly 500,000 are permanent residents (PRs). The remaining 1.3 million are here on temporary work permits and they 'impose no burden' on the public housing system, said Mr Shanmugam, who is also the Second Home Affairs Minister.

He is dreaming. You see foreigners everywhere including females and I am not talking about construction workers. You throw a stone anywhere in Singapore and its likely to hit a foreigner. Where are they housed - Istana.

These guys live in GC Bungalows and have no idea what is happenning elsewhere.

The trouble is that there is no independent mechanism and channel to validate these claims.

He's right. We shouldn't cast the foreigners as villians. The real villian is the government---for their foreign talent policies, not supplying enough public housing. Vote those jokers out.

Once again, the know-it-all but don't-feel-it-at-all super-remunerated Minister gasbag has never done any checking, but is quick to blame the problem on Sinkies.

Sinkies pay him a humongous salary to guess and shoot his mouth off.

My question to him and Mah is: solve the housing and job problems for Singaporeans or else step down and shut the fuck up.

Part of the problem is the way that Singapore raise their questions and the tendency to keep quiet when rubbish answers are given. The way the PAP replies to every question is that Singaporeans are living in a lap of luxury, intolerant and xenophobic.

The favorite reply for the last few years is - jobs that go to foreigners are shunned by Singaporeans.

One thing we have more than enough is useless Ministers in Cabinet. Singapore has probably the largest Cabinet to population ratio in the world, not forgetting to tote up their salaries! Too many overpaid idiots to blame Sinkies for their costly errors!

the mama forgets about the naturalised sporns in the 3.2 million.

and the 500k PRs are also able to buy HDB resale.

we are not talking about the 1.3 million cheap labor , these people only driving up rental only.

so it is the FT policy that is killing the decent shelter, still want to deny somemore
.

Agreed. What they need is first do some research, analyse, lock in focus and attack like a pit bull, keeping focus on original question and sifting answers for relevance, red herrings quickly, and re-attack.

Pap is in control of both the supply (planning and building infrastructures) and demand (immigration) valves of the country. if its like US where illegal immigration is big problem, then i can forgive them for not predicting accurately.
So now they shirk the responsibility and put the blame on Singaporean F#@K! :oIo:

He is probably jealous of Lim Swee Say for taking the Minister Moron award and now trying his very best to prove he is the best Moron among the ministers. Should we accoard him the Mentor Moron instead?

The saddest thing is that people do not get to read the down -to-earth answers.

You have 500K PRs---this is an enormous group, they are not locals as well, and this is a divine truth. God knows either...

With less resale flats on the ground for people to get a shelter, when fake demand is too high for a small supply, you have the sellers market, and you get fake high price.

besides, new citizens are also one factor, of course by saying they are singaporeans, the problem is solved quickly.

Perhaps, the Indian man should publish the figure of PRs owners of resale flats and their purchased price.

And also how many new citizens over the past five years buying up HDB new flats.

If tis Indian man can show us all these figures in details, i will salute him and agree with him what he says.

just talk and try to please the foreigners is not the solution, FT policy and HDB are also responsible for the fake high price.

come on, be a man, show us the all the figures.

He does not have exact data or investigate the cause himself. He simply say things that he read from the newspaper or from his master's lips and than expect the citizens to believe in every words he said so that it can be easily swept away under the carpet and ready to call for an election.
