HELSINKI - IT IS five times larger than the Titanic and has seven neighbourhoods, an ice rink, a golf course and a 750-seat outdoor amphitheatre. Oasis of the Seas, the world's largest cruise ship, began its glide towards its home port in Florida yesterday - squeezing under the Great Belt Bridge in the Baltic Sea which is just 30cm taller than the ship. Commissioned by Royal Caribbean International, the US$1.4 billion (S$1.9 billion) 16-deck ship took 21/2 years to build at the STX Finland Oy shipyard in Turku, Finland. Royal Caribbean chief executive Richard Fain said the aim was to lure new customers who have not cruised before. The ship, which will be sailing mainly in the Caribbean, has attracted strong pre-bookings despite the global financial crisis. A seven-night inaugural Eastern Caribbean Cruise starts at S$1,899 for an interior room and goes up to S$7,029 for a suite. The liner will embark on its maiden cruise - a four-day trip to the port of Labadee in Haiti - on Dec 1. Oasis of the Seas, the single biggest item ever exported from Finland, has four swimming pools, volleyball and basketball courts, and a youth zone with theme parks and nurseries for children.
