By Elena Chong, Courts Correspondent
A MAN was jailed for seven weeks on Monday for theft of 34 packets of rice and for careless driving.
Muhammad Faisal Mokhtar, 26, then a driver with Gangaa Trading Co, Oil & Grains Merchant, admitted to conspiring with his colleagues, Muhammad Feroz Madi, 27, and Muhammad Amin Mohamed Yusoff to remove 34 packets of rice worth $374 from the company at Jalan Senang on May 23 this year.
He also pleaded guilty to carelessly hitting a parked trishaw while reversing a car and failing to stop after the accident the same day.
A district court heard the night before, Feroz suggested that they steal packets of rice from their employer to sell for money. To carry out the plan, Amin borrowed a weekend car from his family so that Faisal could drive. Faisal was also to act as a look-out.
When the trio arrived at Gangga Trading, Amin changed his mind and left the scene. After the theft, Faisal and Feroz went to a provision shop at Bedok Road where Feroz sold the packets of rice for $204. He gave Faisal $110 and kept the rest for himself.
The cases against Feroz and Amin are pending.
