PARIS, Sept 27 - A Singapore Airlines A380 was forced to turn round mid-flight and head back to Paris on Sunday after one of its four engines failed, the head of the airline's French operations said.

The doubledecker A380 took off from Paris at 12.30 p.m. with 444 passengers aboard and headed for Singapore, but had to turn round after 2 hours 45 minutes because of the engine problem, airline director Jerry Seah said.

The plane landed safely back in France at 5.45 p.m. (1545 GMT) and the passengers were sent to hotels as the airline tried to lay on an alternative flight for them.

Seah told Reuters he believed it was the first time the plane had suffered such a problem since it had started operating the Singapore-Paris route earlier this year.

The giant jet, built by Airbus, is designed to continue flying with only three engines, but came back to Paris as a safety precaution.

2 engine plane are design to fly with one engine.

also 2 engine plane can glide longer in the air with no engine.

Heard of ETOPS? Doesn't apply to 4-engine planes.

Theoretically, 4-engine planes can lose 2 engines... can the 2-engine planes do that?

You right A380 can land with 2 engine but cannot take off because not enough speed/power.

I wonder if other airlines like Emirates is having as much problems as SIA with the A380

SIA was so eager to make $$$ that they rush the A380 into service. Someone had to be the guinea pigs for this new plane & SIA volunteered. As an airline which is cost conscious aka using 3rd world service staff I very much doubt they are up to the task.

Some Sporeans might be willing to trust SIA but I for one choose to fly cheaper & safer & that is on other airlines

Last I flew back from Paris was on Air China, the cabin crew was superb

PARIS - Singapore Airlines and British manufacturer Rolls Royce said Monday they were probing an engine problem in one of the carrier's A380 planes that led it to abort a passenger flight after take-off.

"We are in the process of examining the problem," said Singapore Airlines spokesman Jerry Seah.

Singapore Airlines said the plane carrying 444 passengers from Paris to Singapore was forced to return to the French capital on Sunday when problems were detected two and a half hours into the flight.

Seah added that the Paris-Singapore route was being served by another Airbus A380.

A spokeswoman for Rolls Royce, the engine manufacturer, told AFP the company was "working closely with Singapore Airlines to investigate the reasons behind the engine error message reported on the flight."

She added: "The engine has been removed and is currently undergoing detailed investigation. The aircraft is being fitted with a replacement engine and will continue in service."

The airline said the Airbus A380, the world's largest civilian airliner, could have continued the flight on its three remaining engines.

Airport sources said the plane took off at 1030 GMT on Sunday and landed back at Charles de Gaulle airport at 1539 GMT.

The A380 began its first commercial flights from Europe in early June.

Singapore Airlines was the first carrier to take delivery of the plane, having ordered 19 and taken an option for six more.

The company hopes to have 11 A380s in operation by the end of March.
