Abandoned by son, elderly woman rescued by locals

Kolkata, July 23 A 70-year-old woman, Sabita Ghosh, was allegedly beaten up by her son and left on the streets.

Since Monday morning residents of Bagha Jatin in Borough 11 noticed an elderly woman wandering aimlessly on the roads. She was wearing a torn sari and had bleeding wounds. “We saw her on Monday and Tuesday. Then some of us came forward to offer help,” said a local Amit Basak.

According to him, though she spoke incoherently, they could decipher that she was thrashed by her son and forced to leave her Kayastha Para home in Kasba. “She said that her son had abandoned her a month ago and since then she has been on the streets,” said Basak.

Her son Gautam Ghosh said that the allegations were false and that his mother suffered with schizophrenia. “My mother suffers from mental depression and sudden mood swings. One cannot rely on her statement. She had left home on her own accord,” he said.

Residents of Kayastha Para alleged that Sabita was regularly beaten up and abused by her son.

“Her son would often beat her up and inflict severe wounds, which bled profusely. Gautam’s behaviour had earlier forced Sabita’s husband to move to Ranigunge a few years ago,” said locals.

On Tuesday night, local residents of Bagha Jatin called in an NGO, whose staff took her to the Bangur Hospital.

“Doctors told that she is extremely weak and her wounds will take time to heal,” said Basak. She kept on muttering that she would never go back to her son, he added.

I want to join ACTEA and do my part for SOCIAL JUSTICE.

Dear OverTheCounter,

If you want to do your part for the elderly, you may volunteer here:

SAGE = Singapore Action Group Of Elders

Alternatively, if you witness or know any cases of elder abuse, you may report to MCYS or the police.

Let justice deal with children who abuse their parents.

The recent law passed in enforcing sons and daughters to give money or take care of their parents may result in more elder abuse. Just hope that I am wrong on this one.

You are not wrong. It led to one murder in Ministry of Community Development where one family members stabbed another to death.

Dear Scroobal,

Sometimes I really wonder those scholars up there really understand human beings when they start to write about laws like this one.

They are living in their multi-million highfalutin ivory tower and think will just act according to what they "plan" or "think". They really lost touch on the ground and just presume everything will work according to what they plan. Pushing responsibilities by force to other people and brushing off State's responsibility appears to be so easy; just pick up a keyboard and write a few laws...

They don't understand the full implications of their naivety and they really lack empathy. Empathy is what you need in public service.

Elderly seniors deserve to be treated with respect, dignity, care and concern, but that doesn't always happen. One of the sad things about this is that majority of abusers are relatives or family. They are the worst perpetrators than professional con artists, who are taking advantage of theses seniors financially.
