FOUR wanted gang members were shot dead by police in Selangor, Malaysia, after they charged at police with sickles and parangs.

Police had been hunting the four, aged between 22 and 39, since a robbery in Shah Alam in June in which cash and jewellery worth RM500,000 ($205,000) were taken and a maid raped.

The men, all Indonesians, were wanted for at least 15 robberies and rapes in the Klang Valley.

Selangor police chief Deputy Commissioner (DCP) Khalid Abu Bakar said: 'This was a very violent group and they did not hesitate to hurt or rape their victims during robberies.'

According to a Bernama report, police acted on a tip-off that the four, who are part of a gang called 'Pak Ee', were behaving suspiciously at a wet market in Selayang district at around 6.15am.

Earlier, they were reported to have unsuccessfully tried to break into a house in Jinjang.

When police got there, they spotted the four in a gold Proton Waja. But the gang members sped off and a car chase ensued.

Their car skidded and ended up in a drain near a cement plant. So the four got out of the car and started charging at police, forcing an exchange of gunfire, reported The Star.

The police shots fatally wounded all of them, said DCP Khalid.

Police recovered three machetes, a sickle, two screwdrivers and a metal cutter from the group.

DCP Khalid said police believe there were still several other gang members at large, and were investigating if the group had committed crimes in other states.
