Hired 'phantom' workers

ON PAPER, a River Valley Road restaurant was listed as having 40 Singaporeans on its payroll.

But three of those employees never showed up for work or collected their salaries. Nor were they likely to create trouble - because they were already dead.

On Monday, their boss Sambnani Anil Pritamdas, 34, was jailed six months, convicted on six charges of making false declarations about the number of Singaporeans hired and one of instigating his brother, a silent partner of the restaurant, to make a false declaration.

Eight similar charges were considered.

He will appeal against the sentence and is out on a $30,000 bail.

The case puts a literal spin to the term 'phantom workers', Singaporeans listed as hired so that the employer becomes eligible to employ more foreign workers.

The court heard that between March 2007 and April last year, Pritamdas submitted the particulars of Singaporeans he claimed were employed by his restaurant, Spize - The Makan Place.

Investigations carried out by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) showed that only 19 of the workers he declared were actually employees. The rest had never worked at the restaurant.

To cover his ruse, Pritamdas even put money into the Central Provident Fund (CPF) accounts for all these workers, knowing that this would back his claim of the Singaporeans he employed.

In mitigation, his lawyer asked that his client be spared a jail term. He said Pritamdas had tried unsuccessfully to recruit Singaporeans, who are known to shun restaurant work for the shift duties involved, among other reasons.

He is probably paying $3.50 an hour for his foreign workers and expects to pay S'poreans the same low wages. Only senior citizens might be interested to take up this kind of low pay jobs. But then, restaurants want younger workers, not aged workers and are not keen to raise wages for younger S'poreans.

Singaporeans don't want the job yet like to scold others who take it up and keep the price of his meals low

Uniquely Singaporean!

You are still agonising because you don't see the light

There is a shortage of service staff and the MOM must INCREASE THE RATIO so that employers can hire more PRC and Burmese and others

PRC are best because they are hardworking and take initiative

Burmese also very hardworking and I like them, only first six months or so, a lot of language problems unless they know a bit of Chinese

The whole question is WHY MUST WE SUPPRESSES LOCAL SALARIES BY IMPORTING RELENTLESSLY FOREIGN WORKERS??????
First . there are many locals who need jobs, to tie over the difficult times..
Secong, we need to upgrade our local incomes to meet the ever increasing cost ..locals must maintain our own standard of livings..

By relentless allowing so much of cheap labours...we are depriving our local workforce....
and impeding us from buiding a prosperous and happy populations

In Europe..they manage these very well..all pay the workers accordingly..every trades maintain a minimun incomes .....and they have constantly upgrade the national standard of living.............they do have foreign workers..but that only allow them to work in such a way not to affect the national incomes..........

If we dont protect ourself..who will????????

How much does a meal cost in london or paris, where can you get a decent meal for 2 to 3 $ . if you want to pay high salaries for the kitchen helper, your bowl of noodles may cost anything from 10 to 20 $.

Wage cost is not the only concern , other direct and indirect cost also weigh in very heavily on the total operating cost for a business.

They are the RENTAL cost , utility cost , property tax .... etc etc ...... the killer is the Rental cost. If a bowl of noodle is to cost $15 to $20 , market forces will reign in. Ppl might be prepared to bring in home cook meals to work at lunch. Demand for them will go down , and so will the price for that bowl of noodle.

Artifically pressing the wage of a average person by letting in more foreign workers is not the way to go !

Food cost, rental and labour are the 3 main costs of running a restaurant.

I am for fair wages, but Singaporeans have to realise that the cost of things WILL go up.

I am for a strong labour union too, but have you heard about GM? They have to pay the workers even if the factory is not running!!!

It is a thin line separating fair wages/cost of things and working conditions/strong union. I do not want to be the one drawing that line.

What MOM can start first though, is minimum wage and basic working conditions. I have heard of staff working from 8 am to 4 pm with no break for lunch. This is at a very reputable local bakery/restaurant chain.

The only benefit is cost. Your definition of high quality talent with language barrier is fascinating. There are already complaints out there regarding these talents.

so, in order to enjoy a $2 noodles..you prefer that our local workforce to accept same /similar pay as the foreugn workers..who can squeeze 8 to a room..ride bicycle to work..go for free meals at GiShiLinn...wjile the influx of well heeled foreigners push up the prices of housing, public transports..restaurants prices..entertainment prices????????
so,, our lower income group got to struggle to compete jobs with the very lowly paid foreign workers..our middle class got squeezed out by the forign new rich..ONLY those earning million dollars local can live with arelax life style..in singapore...
ie.95% of locals feel out-placed and squeeze out!!!!!!!!!
IS THAT WISE?????? THINK AGAIN BROTHER...............
