The Workers’ Party will not be able to bring up its adjournment motion on the recent Presidential Election at the next parliamentary sitting, the second time in a row that it was not picked in a ballot.
An adjournment motion entitles an MP to speak for up to 20 minutes on his or her subject matter.
WP MP Sylvia Lim refiled the motion “Counting from President Wee Kim Wee or President Ong Teng Cheong for Reserved Presidential Election – Policy Decision or Legal Question?” last week. This came after she failed in her first attempt to have the adjournment motion heard at the previous sitting on 11 September.
In a statement on Tuesday (26 September), WP said Parliament received a total of three bids at the close of the deadline for adjournment motions for the sitting next Monday (2 October).
At the ballot conducted by Speaker of Parliament Tan Chuan-Jin on Tuesday and witnessed by Lim, the adjournment motion filed by Ang Mo Kio GRC Intan Azura on the topic: “Preserving Green Space and Heritage in Jalan Kayu Constituency” was chosen for the next sitting. The other bid is by Sembawang GRC MP Vikram Nair on “The Future of National Service”.
Should there be a sitting on Tuesday (3 October), Lim’s motion may be subject to ballot again at the end of the sitting on Monday.
