SINGAPORE: More than dozens of Apple fans turned up at the Apple Store along Orchard Road for the launch of the new iPhone 8 and the larger iPhone 8 Plus on Friday (Sep 22).

For some, the race to be the first few in the queue began on Thursday night.

About 80 diehard Apple fans stood in line overnight outside the store at Knightsbridge Mall after receiving green numbered wristbands.

About 100 more joined the walk-in queue this morning ahead of the launch at 8am. Given that Singapore is among the first few markets where the new iPhones are released, many foreigners could be seen in the queue.

Among them was Mr Hoai Trinh, a 32-year-old businessman from Vietnam who managed to get two gold versions of the iPhone 8 Plus.

This was the fourth time Mr Hoai had travelled to Singapore for the iPhone launches and he plans to make another trip to Singapore when the iPhone X is launched.

"I like the new camera, the all-glass (exterior) and the processor ... It's expensive but we like it," he told Channel NewsAsia, adding that the phones amount to a month's salary for him.

Prices for the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which come in silver, space grey and gold in 64GB and 256GB models, start from S$1,148 and S$1,308 respectively.

Friday's event marks the first major product launch to be held at the Apple Store in Singapore, which opened to much fanfare in May.

Mr Varis Sinthopruangchai from Bangkok was the first to enter the Apple Store on Friday. The 20-year-old finance major, who is on an exchange programme at the National University of Singapore, had pre-ordered the black versions of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus last week.

"The booking was hard but it all paid off," said Mr Sinthopruangchai, who plans to give the phones to his parents. "It's my first time getting the iPhone on the first day ... it's a very exciting and memorable moment in my lifetime."

Also from Bangkok was Mr Sarunpat Apichaic, who was eighth in line and bought two iPhone 8 Plus phones in silver and space grey.

The 35-year-old said this is the first time he is queuing to get the new iPhones and was tempted to do so after reading about the better camera function.

Despite spending more than S$2,000, Mr Apichaic told Channel NewsAsia: "This is not expensive because I love Apple." He plans to travel back to Singapore to get the iPhone X next month.

To be sure, there are other Apple fans who have decided to give Friday's launch a miss and hold out for the soon-to-be-released iPhone X.

Set to go on sale next month, the iPhone X is a glass and stainless steel device with an edge-to-edge display that Chief Executive Tim Cook has called "the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone".

Singaporean Bernard Teo, 32, said the iPhone 8 offers "small incremental upgrades" from its predecessors.

On the other hand, the iPhone X, which has been described as the 10th-anniversary iPhone, has a bigger screen size and other "innovative changes" such as the availability of Face ID.

New features of the iPhone 8 including wireless charging using the Qi standard will also be made available on the iPhone X, making the latter a "better deal", he told Channel NewsAsia.

'We must be very careful that we don't fall into trap of extremists': Vivian Balakrishnan in UN speech
"Extremists everywhere actually have a common playbook," Singapore's Foreign Affairs Minister says.

SINGAPORE: Leaders should be "careful and measured" in their response to extremists, Singapore's Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said in his speech at the 72nd session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on Saturday (Sep 23).

"Extremists everywhere actually have a common playbook," he said. "First, commit an egregious act of violence. Second, stick a religious label on the situation in order to convey a sense of 'us' versus 'them'. Third, to eliminate the grey zone of moderates by causing alienation due to an overreaction.

"We must be very careful that we don’t fall into the trap of these extremists."

Citing the ongoing conflict in Myanmar's Rakhine state following a terrorist attack in August, Dr Balakrishnan said it was the responsibility of every government to protect every civilian, regardless of their ethnicity, religious belief or origin.

He noted that he had visited Nay Pyi Taw last week and met with Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, who was "deeply troubled by what is happening in her own country, and deeply distressed by the pain and suffering which is happening there".

Dr Balakrishnan said the situation in Rakhine was "a complex inter-communal issue with deep historical roots" that will not be solved instantly, and that ASEAN supports Myanmar seeking a long-term solution to restore stability in its own borders.

Singapore will work with ASEAN, through ASEAN and with Myanmar to extend humanitarian assistance to all affected communities, he added.

UN "BEST PLACED" TO ADDRESS GLOBAL PROBLEMS

In his speech, Dr Balakrishnan said the global leaders at the assembly were meeting in a time of uncertainty, with old fault lines of race, language and religion remaining active, renewed anxiety about jobs and inequality, and new technologies and non-state actors challenging the international order.

Terrorist groups are also using the Internet to spread their poisonous radical ideologies, including in Southeast Asia. Cyberattacks and fake news have proliferated and conflicts in many regions of the world remain while new ones have emerged, he added.

Dr Balakrishnan argued that the UN was the only universal body best placed to address the problems of the global commons.

"In an environment of increased uncertainties, the case for multilateralism becomes stronger, not weaker," he said.

"Now more than ever, we need the UN to help us find solutions to difficult, complex, global and local issues."

The UN has given Singapore "enormous opportunities for amazing progress over the past five decades" and is "absolutely essential" especially for small states, he said, adding: "It has made a significant difference to the lives of people around the world."

The minister said that if the UN is to remain effective and relevant, it has to become “fit-for-purpose”.

"There is much scope to optimise synergies and minimise inefficiencies within the UN system," he said, adding that Singapore "strongly supports" UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' efforts to reform and restructure the UN.

"We need to safeguard and strengthen our multilateral, rules-based system so that even the smallest country can survive and thrive as an independent, sovereign nation. We need an open global architecture based on a vision of interdependence in order to secure sustainable prosperity for every single one of us. But most importantly, we need inclusive and fair economic growth to empower all our people to lead good and meaningful lives."

New iPhone 8 Feature Is A Massive Disappointment

Ewan Spence , Contributor
Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own.

Apple’s latest smartphone looks set to deliver another disappointment as a key piece of hardware may be delayed past the launch date of the presumptively titled iPhone 8.

Part of the appeal of the upcoming flagship iPhone is the new technology that Apple will be introducing to the iOS device. The iPhone 8 needs to have enough unique features to make it stand out against the expected launch of the cheaper and capable iPhone 7S and 7S Plus. One of the features that I have long advocated that Apple should adopt is wireless charging - Tim Cook and his team are expected to include this in the tenth-anniversary device, but there may be trouble ahead.

Long-time Apple watcher John Gruber has tweeted out on the subject of wireless charging, noting that it’s not going to be in the retail packaging of the handset and it may be delayed as it waits for the first major point release of iOS 11.

I’ve heard that inductive charging will (a) be sold separately, and (b) might be late, waiting for iOS 11.1 (a la Portrait mode last year). https://t.co/N65dHMNQIJ

— John Gruber (@gruber) July 8, 2017

The iPhone 8 is expected to launch alongside the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus in September. The new 7S family of devices will be in stores in the usual 2-3 week window after the event, but fans of the iPhone 8 following the latest leaks will realise they will have to wait longer as the iPhone 8 is being delayed.

And thanks to Gruber’s tweet, that anger can be compounded with a further delay to Apple’s long-awaited introduction of wireless charging.

Although there were rumors earlier in the year that Apple would be looking at RF based wireless charging that would operate at a distance of a few feet, Gruber has specifically mentioned inductive charging. This is the system used in popular Android handsets (such as the Galaxy S8) and wireless charging accessories for the iPhone (including Mophie’s ChargeForce cases) that requires a charging base to bring a powered coil of wires within a few millimetres of the receiver coils in a device.

Ewan Spence

Mophie Juice Pack Air with Charge Force (image: Ewan Spence)

The suggestion that it may be late is curious but there’s a twist. Apple appears to be taking an isolationist approach towards the charging ecosystem.

If Apple was using one of the current wireless charging standards such as Qi, then the coils in the iPhone 8 would be compatible with the wide range of chargers already on the market. Wireless charging would be available out of the box. Apple’s own inductive charger could arrive later in the year (hence the 'sold separately' statement) but the magical charging feature would already be in use - much as wireless bluetooth headphones could be used with last year’s iPhone 7 even though the AirPods were not available.

According to Gruber (and assuming Taniyama-Shimura) the inductive charging will require the next major update to iOS to allow it to be ‘turned on’. You can’t turn physics on and off, and if you are going with a charging standard in hardware, the circuitry and power lines will be in the handset at the point of purchase. So why would Apple need a software update to activate inductive charging?
Wireless Charging The iPhone 6 (image: Ewan Spence)
Ewan Spence

Wireless Charging The iPhone 6 (image: Ewan Spence)

Given Apple’s history of proprietary technology, I’d suggest, with a heavy heart, that Tim Cook and his team have decided against an open standards, and will be tweaking the frequency and operation of its inductive charging system to lock users into Apple’s ecosystem. If you want the convenience of charging the iPhone 8 wirelessly, you’ll be purchasing either Apple’s own base stations, or base stations approved by Apple through the ‘Made For iPhone’ program.

That certainly offers Apple more control (and more income) with the introduction of a technology that is familiar and established on Android devices; it offers Apple another way to lock consumers into the iOS ecosystem; and it will no doubt allow another bingo-card use of the phrase “[wireless charging] in a way that only Apple can deliver” at the launch event.

But I think a proprietary system is all about what’s good for Apple, not what’s good for the consumer.

Even if it arrived on time.

Now read how to add wireless charging to your iPhone from your keyring…

The Gay Phone sucks, and their marketing spec of battery capacity is FAKED. Samsung batteries are over 3000mAh.

It claimed 2675mAh here but in the Take Apart Video, the part marked only 1821mAh on the battery itself!

iPhone 8 teardown

In design, the iPhone 8 looks a lot like the iPhone 7, but there’s a lot going on inside that you and I are not familiar with. Well, to familiarize ourselves with the internals of the phone, iFixit got an early start on the iPhone 8 teardown process, revealing several changes present on the flagship’s innards.
iPhone 8 Logic Board Includes Snapdragon X16 LTE Modem, 2GB RAM but Smaller Battery Capacity

The teardown shows some notable changes in the smartphone, and when we say notable, we’re talking about the wireless charging coil. The resolution of the phone has been retained along with the display tech; 1,334 x 750 with an IPS LCD panel. Thanks to the number of additions present in the phone, Apple was forced to incorporate a smaller battery than the cell present in the iPhone 7.

You now get a 1,821mAh battery, but despite that change, the iPhone 8 continues to offer the same battery life as the iPhone 7 due to processor improvements. In addition to the A11 Bionic chipset, you have 2GB of SK Hynix LPDDR4 RAM. Not surprisingly there is also a Qualcomm MDM9656 Snapdragon X16 LTE modem and an NXP 80V18 Secure NFC module.

Are the Reports pouncing on the smaller Lines outside Apple Stores for the iPhone 8 really newsworthy?

1AF X APPLE IPHONE 8 LINE UP

When Apple's late CEO Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone in 2007 there were line-ups around the block at every Apple Store with hungry fans wanting to be one of the first to get their hands on the revolutionary smartphone. It was nothing short of a phenomenon. Fast forward to the iPhone 8 being launched on Friday and the Apple Store in Los Angeles only had a handful of Apple fans in the early morning.

USA Today seemed to be pleased to pounce on this development, but did provide a context. Jefferson Graham noted in his report that smaller lines could also be due to better management: "Chalk it up to better management. Apple has convinced people that they could preorder the phone and have it waiting for them on opening day and they also have an appointment system at the store that has made the lines smaller and more manageable."

In 2007 Apple didn't have a great online store fans could use like they do today. In 2007, 2008 and 2009 the Apple Store was really irrelevant in delivering iPhones to the masses, hence the larger outdoor lines.

While Apple introduced a superior online store in 2010, it still took years for users to get used to trusting ordering online. As more fans became familiar with using the online store, the lines for opening day began to shrink. Its simple evolution that numbskull news sites equating smaller lines on opening day to a product not being popular is disingenuous and rather quite ignorant. Apple competitors are having field day with this point in the press.

Of course when the iPhone X debuts in November, we may see longer lines again only because of the perception that there will be a shortage of them on the market before Christmas. That's a different circumstance and so yes, there may be longer lines.

On Friday we reported on Tim Cook being interviewed at the Pal Alto Apple Store and it was so loud with customers buzzing in the store it was hard to hear the interview. Was that a sign of the iPhone 8 in trouble? I don't think so.

Apple's photos from their 5th Avenue Store (temporary store) illustrates how jammed pack it was with eager fans wanting to get their hands on the new iPhone 8 and with some customers even buying bags of them as noted below.

2 - iphone8_launch-5th-ave_nyc_two_shopping_bags

3 iphone8_launch-5th-ave-nyc-crowd-view

Knowing what Apple's CEO Tim Cook had said about sales being great, with some stores selling out of new products, Reuters still decided to put the emphasis of their report on the negative side of the ledger pointing to smaller lines around the world. They emphasized that "weak turnout for the latest iPhone partly due to poor reviews."

It's not to pick on Reuters as others decided to take that same track such as the UK's Guardian whose byline read: "iPhone 8: muted reaction and small queues lead to questions over demand."

In the end, Apple's competition is enjoying the negativity surrounding the iPhone 8, especially their Chinese competitors. But the fact is that 2017 is a different year with the second half of the story, and perhaps the most important half of the story, only rolls out in November. In total, Apple should be able to set a sales record for calendar Q4 spilling over to calendar Q1 because of the late entry of the iPhone X which I still believe was strategic and not due to problems with parts.

On the point of the smaller lines, I feel like screaming at these numbskulls that times have changed. The lines are smaller because Apple has diligently worked on advancing their online store over the years, perfected pre-ordering accommodation and in-store reservations at their brick and mortar stores which has grown to over 400 stores around the globe.

Judging demand for Apple's iPhones these days by simply looking at how long line-ups are is a sad day for journalism. Products in short demand may still warrant longer lines, but in general, that metric of judging iPhone demand by customer line-up sizes is long over. Wake up, it's 2017.

iPhone X Is Everything Wrong With Tim Cook's Apple

Ewan Spence , Contributor
Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own.

“Say hello to the future” adorns Apple’s iPhone X marketing. That is true… as time moves forward the future of the American company is selling more handsets to a captive audience. But is the iPhone X really the future of smartphones? Or is it just Tim Cook forgetting the lessons of Steve Jobs and following market expectations and demands?

Apple CEO Tim Cook speaks during an Apple special event at the Steve Jobs Theatre (Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images)

Once you step outside of Apple’s powerful adverbs and mystical presentation of the iPhone X, some truths start to appear. First of all is the launch dates. Pre-orders are not commencing for more than six weeks after the reveal of the handset in early September, and the handset will not be in the hands of consumers until early November at the earliest.

It’s very likely that the initial stock will be much reduced compared to previous iPhone launches. That early November launch will be met, but I’m going to be interested to see how widely spread out and how large the stock is. There’s a huge question over the management of the production to be that late to market. This wasn’t a case of Apple waiting until the device was ready, it was following the market expectations of announcing a new device in September rather than holding on to the technology until it was right. This was “the market expects” and Apple delivered.

The iPhone X is packed with new technology to achieve its signature feat of facial recognition - and any discussion around this has to be caveated with the simple fact that there’s been no independent testing of the system. Alongside the sensors required for this you have Apple’s own silicon inside the handset which is tied closely to the operating system and applications. That offers benefits around power and speed, but these benefits are generally invisible to the user switching between social media apps, instant messaging clients, and Neko Atsume.

Stop and ask what real world problems the iPhone X answers. There are a lot of cute answers but on a practical sense the iPhone X offers very little on top of the iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus, which in turn are only incremental bumps over last year’s models. And in a head to head with leading Android headsets there’s very little to differentiate the handsets.

The iPhone X could be the greatest leap forward in technology simply for the sake of having the technology.

Apple CEO Tim Cook speaks about the new iPhone lineup during a media event at Apple's new headquarters (Photo: Josh Edelson/AFP/Getty Images)

The iPhone X also introduces an awkward problem for the iPhone line. When Steve Jobs’ first smartphone was launched it was a ‘do everything’ single device. There were no features that were held back for a ‘better smartphone’. The buying choice was simple and in the face of multiple competing handsets with different options, some had GPS and mapping, some had good cameras, some had 3.5mm stereo jacks for listening to music. Part of the revolutionary nature of the iPhone was ‘this is all you need’.

That is no longer the case. Apple’s iPhone range now goes from the diminutive iPhone SE all the way up to the incoming iPhone X, a spread of five generations of devices. It's a dizzying array of handsets where features may or may not be present, such as 3D Touch or Touch ID, different storage options at different price points, a riot of colors, the 3.5mm headphone jack, wireless charging, and facial recognition.

Now it takes a ridiculous amount of research and comparison to find the iPhone that may suit your needs, and there is not a single device that offers all of features in a single package - every iPhone has some form of limitation and restriction designed into it.

Tim Cook has brought complexity to what was once Apple’s simplest offering.

Apple CEO Tim Cook speaks during a media event at Apple's new headquarters in Cupertino (Photo: Josh Edelon/AFP/Getty Images)

This is the change that Tim Cook has brought to Apple. The iPhone is more commercial than it has ever been, mimicking the multi-model product line of its Android competitors. It relies heavily on huge marketing spend and the goodwill of the industry to be seen as the leader.

Yes, there are advances in the technology used by Apple, and these should be lauded, but let’s not over exaggerate the benefits of a faster mobile processor or a new biometric identification system. It’s been a long time since the classic “Think Different” of Apple’s yesteryear.

The secret of the iPhone X is this. Apple’s decision to run with its own silicon is arguably the only distinctive point that has an impact on regular users. The rest of Tim Cook’s iPhone is an echo of the wider smartphone industry.

Now read why the iPhone X will force Apple to choose between 'Good' and 'Evil' wireless charging…

Re: new Gay Phones are OVER-SUPPLIED! Poorly Received! Too easy to buy! Sellers lost

the full (unsubsidized) price difference between the 8 and x is a mere 300+-, not huge enough for potential 8 buyers to wait out a few more months for the x. because of supply chain issues for the x, it should be priced at us$6969, causing many on the fence to commit to the 8 when their 2-year contracts run out typically in september-october (u.s. market). there’s a huge customer base still on the 6 from 2 years ago. at us$6969 the x will be the true “elite” device market-segmented for the elites and wealthy. wannabes who are not wealthy (mostly tiongs) but wish to show off or have face will wait out for the x. those who like status symbols but do not have us$6.9m disposable cash in the bank will continue to buy the x. market is actually huge. $6969 is a drop in the luxury bucket. it’s affordable luxury much like an lv bag or gucci watch. heck my puppy is worth more than that. and the 2017 sapphire blue macan he rides in is easily us$69k or 10 times that. wtf is apple thinking trying to sell the x for $999?

Re: new Gay Phones are OVER-SUPPLIED! Poorly Received! Too easy to buy! Sellers lost

Gay Phone x is not much better than Gay Phone 8, and they are actually SMALLER SCREEN than Gay Phone 8!

Only slight improvement is a tiny little 1 extra GB RAM (3GB) while even the cheap Chinese Oppo Vivo already got 6GB exactly twice, and then got a slightly more quality super AMOLED screen SUPPLIED BY SAMSUNG! Surely Samsung is using their own better Super AMOLED for their own Galaxy products and selling a poorer quality grade and lower resolution tiny size to Gay Phone Inc.

9 reasons you should buy an iPhone 8 instead of an iPhone X

iPhone 8 and 8 plusHollis Johnson/Business Insider

Apple announced three new iPhones this month: the iPhone 8, the iPhone 8 Plus, and the high-end iPhone X.

Those three phones start at $699, $799, and $999, respectively.

Based on the relatively diminutive launch-day lines for the iPhone 8, it seems likely that most people are waiting for the release of Apple's high-end iPhone X, which debuts November 3.

That said, there are several reasons it's worth considering an iPhone 8 instead of holding out for the iPhone X:
View As: One Page Slides

1. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are powered by the same brains as the iPhone X.
1. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are powered by the same brains as the iPhone X.
Apple

This is probably the most important reason to consider the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus over the iPhone X: Functionally, they're all identical.

All of these phones are powered by Apple's new A11 Bionic chip, a neural engine, and the M11 motion coprocessor. The only difference is how the phones use these features: The iPhone X uses the A11 chip and neural engine for its new face-detection system Face ID, which the iPhone 8 does not have.
2. Touch ID is a proven entity. Face ID is not.
2. Touch ID is a proven entity. Face ID is not.
Apple

Ever since the release of iPhone 5S in 2013, Touch ID has changed the way we use our phones — from unlocking the device, to storing passwords, to using our fingerprints to pay for goods via Apple Pay.

Touch ID is a known, proven entity. Face ID, which will replace Touch ID on the iPhone X, is less known.

Apple makes some bold statements about Face ID. The company claims it's less prone to being tricked than Touch ID. They claim it can also work in the dark, or recognize changes to your face — like if you grow a beard, or wear glasses, or change your hair, or put on a kooky outfit. But we still don't know how Face ID will actually work in the wild when millions of people are using it. Simply put, technology is not infallible, and it's impossible to predict what could go wrong with this unlocking method. (Thankfully, the passcode backup still exists.)

By choosing an iPhone 8, however, you choose to forgo the guinea-pig era for Face ID.
3. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus support fast charging and wireless charging for the first time — just like the iPhone X.
3. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus support fast charging and wireless charging for the first time — just like the iPhone X.
Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

All of these phones support the Qi wireless charging standard as well as fast-charging.

The downside is, you'll have to buy extra accessories if you choose either new charging method. Apple offers several different Qi wireless charging pads you can buy (its own AirPower solution won't be out until 2018, unfortunately), and you'll need to buy anywhere from $25 to $75 worth of equipment — a Lightning-to-USB-C cable and a USB-C Power Delivery-compatible charger, specifically — if you want to use fast-charging for your iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or iPhone X.

Again, this is one more expense to consider when thinking about the iPhone 8 versus the $1,000-to-start iPhone X.
4. The iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X have nearly-identical rear cameras.
4. The iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X have nearly-identical rear cameras.
Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

If you care at all about photography, the rear cameras on the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X are nearly identical. The iPhone 8 is also a great shooter, but the larger 8 Plus adds a second telephoto lens so you can zoom in without losing image quality.

The only difference between the rear cameras on the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X is that the iPhone X has optical-image stabilization for both the wide-angle and telephoto lenses, for sharper images, especially in low-light settings; the iPhone 8 Plus only has OIS for the wide-angle lens, like the iPhone 7 Plus before it.
5. The front-facing cameras on the iPhone 8 and iPhone X are also identical — save for a few extra features.
5. The front-facing cameras on the iPhone 8 and iPhone X are also identical — save for a few extra features.
Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

On paper, the FaceTime HD cameras of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are functionally identical to the front-facing camera inside the iPhone X's TrueDepth camera system. All of these phones take 7-megapixel photos, have a ƒ/2.2 aperture, and film video in 1080p.

The only difference is the iPhone X got a few "exclusive" software camera features: Portrait Mode on the front-facing camera (in addition to the back); Portrait Lighting, which lets you remove backgrounds in your selfies for a dramatic effect; and Animoji, where you can send animated emoji to your friends that mimic your facial expressions and even speak using your voice.
6. The iPhone 8 doesn't have that hideous "notch" at the top of the phone.
6. The iPhone 8 doesn't have that hideous "notch" at the top of the phone.
Apple

The TrueDepth camera system on the iPhone X is the lone interruption on that phone's edge-to-edge display. The "notch," as many are calling it, is pretty hideous, unfortunately.

Thankfully, there's no notch on the iPhone 8 or 8 Plus.
7. The iPhone X is more expensive than the iPhone 8.
7. The iPhone X is more expensive than the iPhone 8.
Apple

The iPhone 8 starts at $700, while the larger iPhone 8 Plus starts at $800.

The iPhone X, on the other hand, starts at $1,000.

It's simple math: You can save at least $200 by going with an iPhone 8, which, keep in mind, is still a brand-new phone from Apple.
8. If you're upgrading from an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, your old cases will fit.
8. If you're upgrading from an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, your old cases will fit.
Hollis Johnson/Business Insider

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus have near-identical dimensions to their predecessors, the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, respectively. The new phones are slightly heavier, and there are slight differences in the new phones' height, length and depth, but all of the differences are less than a millimeter each, which means your old iPhone 7 cases will still fit.

The iPhone X has completely different dimensions from past iPhones, so your old cases won't work with this phone — one more expense to consider when buying this already-expensive phone.
9. You'll actually be able to find it.
9. You'll actually be able to find it.
A customer being handed over her new iPhone 8. She said she didn't need the iPhone X.Edoardo Maggio/Business Insider

Since everyone is so focused on the iPhone X, the iPhone 8 is actually easy to find and buy — even today! Meanwhile, iPhone X will likely be in high demand and short supply, meaning lots of people will probably be waiting weeks and months for their phones to arrive while you're sitting pretty with your iPhone 8, which has arguably all of the biggest advantages of the iPhone X, with a more reasonable price tag.

Since getting the Huawei P10 Plus last Tuesday I hardly use the iPhone camera anymore and I noticed Android is getting closer and closer to iPhone in terms of ease of use.

iPhone 8 Glass Back Replacements Are Very Expensive
The glass back doesn't qualify as a $29 screen replacement, and out of warranty Apple charges at least $349.

Apple iPhone 8 Glass Backs

If you are planning to purchase an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus, then putting it inside a case has never been more important due to the prices Apple is set to charge for repairing damage to the glass casing.

Opting to buy AppleCare+ for your new iPhone entitles you to two years of coverage and two incidents of accidental damage. Screen repair costs $29 and other damage costs $99 as part of that allowance. However, the new glass back on the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus does not count as a screen replacement, and so will cost $99 to repair under AppleCare+.

According to AppleInsider, it gets worse. If you want the glass back repaired beyond those two incidents of accidental damage, Apple will charge $349 for the iPhone 8 and $399 for the iPhone 8 Plus. If the damage is viewed as "mass destruction" by Apple, you may be asked to pay those prices regardless of your AppleCare+ status.

The reason for the high cost is due to how Apple decided to manufacture the phones. The glass back is fused to the back of the phone using a lot of glue, meaning it's not an easy process to replace it. So it's a difficult fix because Apple made it difficult.

To avoid these costs on what is already an expensive couple of handsets, invest in a good case. It will add thickness and hide the handset, but you won't mind after the first time your iPhone drops to the floor and the glass casing doesn't crack saving you at least $99.

From the word on the street (in China) a segment of the traditional Phone consumers have crossed over to 国产品牌手机 like huawei because of US shit stirring in the South china sea issue over the past year.

Nationalistic and patriotic sentiments can very damaging to foreign brands. Just look at what happened to Lotte

With this sort of pricing..I rather buy a mid range phone like Xiaomi or Samsung a9 etc..than spoil get a new one...but an iPhone is like using a race horse instead of a work horse.
