A very powerful earthquake has struck off the coast of Mexico, shaking buildings in the capital and sparking tsunami warnings.

The USGS said a magnitude 8.1 quake struck 123 km (76 miles) southwest of the town of Pijijiapan, at a depth of 33 km (21 miles).

Widespread, hazardous tsunami waves were possible, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

"Tsunami waves reaching more than three meters above the tide level are possible along the coasts of Mexico," it said, with lower waves in other countries.

Civil protection officials were checking for damage in Chiapas, but the quake was so powerful that frightened residents in Mexico City more than 650 miles away fled apartment buildings, often in their pajamas, and gathered in groups in the street.

Around midnight buildings swayed strongly for more than minute, loosening light fixtures from ceilings. Helicopters crisscrossed the sky above Mexico City with spotlights. Some neighborhoods kept electricity while others remained in darkness.

Guatemala president calls for calm

In neighbouring Guatemala, President Jimmy Morales spoke on national television to call for calm while emergency crews checked for damage. Local radio in the Central American country reported one death, but it could not be confirmed.

"We have reports of some damage and the death of one person, even though we still don't have exact details," Morales said.

He said the possible death occurred in San Marcos state near the border with Mexico.

Rodrigo Soberanes, who lives near San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas, a poor largely indigenous state popular with tourists, described the moment the quake struck.

"The house moved like chewing gum and the light and internet went out momentarily."

Civil Defence in Chiapas said on its Twitter account that its personnel were in the streets aiding people and warned residents to prepare for aftershocks. But it made no immediate comment about damage.

A major earthquake struck of the coast of southern Mexico late Thursday night, causing widespread reports of damage and fears of deaths and tsunamis.

The 8.1-magnitude temblor struck off the coast of the state of Chiapas, at a depth of about 20 miles, the US Geological Survey said. The epicenter of the quake, which hit shortly before midnight, was located about 102 miles west of the city of Tapachula.

The USGS said that significant casualties and economic loss were likely as a result of the quake.

The earthquake was widely felt across the region, including in Mexico City, where journalists reported power outages. Images from Mexico City also appeared to capture the moment the shaking took place, showing buildings and other structures swaying violently.

Following the quake, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said hazardous tsunami waves more than 9 feet high were possible along the coast of Mexico. Tsunami waves higher than 3 feet were said to be possible in Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, American Samoa, Fiji, and other places across the Pacific.

Mexican officials warned of tsunami waves higher than 13 feet.

However, NOAA reported that the Pacific coast of the United States, British Columbia, and Alaska were not facing the threat of a tsunami from the earthquake.

A series of smaller quakes, including one magnitude 5.7, struck the same region in the minutes following the larger temblor.

A massive late-night earthquake hit off the coast of Southern Mexico, near the border of Guatemala, sparking panic and shaking buildings as far as away as Mexico City.

It struck at a depth of about 22 miles off the coast of Tres Picos around 11:49 p.m. local time. Its epicenter was 102 miles west of Tapachula in southern Chiapas.

The U.S. Geological Survey initially estimated a magnitude of 8.0 before revising it to 8.1. The Mexican Seismological Agency later rated it 8.4

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said hazardous waves were possible within three hours of the large quake along several coasts in Mexico, including Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras and Ecuador. Tsunami threats were still being evaluated for Hawaii, Guam and other Pacific Islands.

There was no immediate tsunami threat for the U.S. West Coast.

Those in capital city — located more than 650 miles from the quake's epicenter — fled into the streets when the tremor occurred. Witnesses said buildings there threatened to topple, swaying back and forth, despite the city’s distance from the event.

There were no immediate reports of damage, though it did knock out power in several neighborhoods.

The country's civil protection agency said it was the strongest earthquake to hit Mexico since 1985, when a disastrous tremor claimed th lives of thousands and wiped out countless buildings.

Such powerful earthquakes cause a lot of damage! I feel sorry for the victims... It's a real shame that lately the earthquakes are so frequent https://allatra.tv/en/earthquakes . And this tendency keeps growing. There are more and more of powerful earthquakes. Just this year, the scientists predict over 30 powerful earthquakes. But, in fact, just one big one is more than enough!
