The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to a suspected drowning case at Palawan Beach, Sentosa, at about 2.50pm yesterday.

Two fire engines, one marine vessel, an ambulance and officers from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (Dart) were dispatched. Dart officers conducted an underwater search operation at a depth of about 4m in low visibility.

"As there was no sign of a case, the underwater search operation was called off at 6.30pm," said SCDF. "A periodic surface search will be conducted henceforth."

Two friends, students Shazwan Abdullah, 17, and 16-year-old Sonia Jumat, and flight attendant Nicole Tomm, 30, were lying on the beach when they told The New Paper they heard shouts of "help".

Ms Sonia said she spotted a pair of hands in the water along the edge of the safety net before it disappeared while Shazwan rushed to inform a nearby beach patrol officer.

A spokesman for Sentosa Development Corporation said that beach patrol officers responded to a request for assistance at about 2.30pm.

"Sentosa Rangers also alerted the Singapore Civil Defence Force and Singapore Police Force, who arrived on-site to render further assistance," said the spokesman.

SCDF and the whole Home Affairs PR dept has the worst way of handling press queries. Even if someone vomited on a 5ft way, they will immediately pull their standard template which alway has some silly statement about all how many men and equipment they are despatched. And it will specific short of telling us the year of manufacturer and name of each driver and how long they had their drivers' licence. And we paying this fucking arsehole such a high pay pay. Can understand if it involved a major fire or disaster.

People are interested in what happened to the person and what the prognosis is.

And yes, why 2 bloody fire engines? Were they hoping to drain the sea with their powerful pumps?

Don't go into lagoon ever. They have a number of incidents of swimmers getting spiked by poisonous stone fish 9( not sure which species). There was even attempt to sue Sentosa Development Corporation about this. And the State controlled press prostitutes will not cover it.

they are copying american first responders' modus operandi. in whatever emergency situations, show up with force in all complements, and "one alarm" means a fire truck, a medical truck followed by police cruiser and an ambulance. emergency includes ah neh elderly suffering from a mild stroke and the family called 911. every representative of first responders will show up, and only the ambulance is warranted. the rest just hang around and earn overtime, extra pay and credit as response to site triggers a work code that goes "cha-ching!" mantra is "better to have more and over the top in life and death situation than under."
