If you are a Christian who actually practices what the bible teaches, it will be hard to support many of the positions taken by cabinet. The move to Speaker might seem to be demotion to many. It however might be welcome relief for him as he no longer has to compromise his personal principles and beliefs.

This guy got no principles methinks.
For his first campaign, he said he was going to change things from inside.
Instead, once inside, he got changed those further inside.
Seduced by the salary etc, principles went out of the window.

The job is basically a time watcher (and the most expensive one) for the parliamentary session. Not much responsibility to speak of. This post is usually taken up by mp without any portfolio in the cabinet. Very unusual to have a minister to be appointed as speaker.

There must been a fair amount of negotiation before this compromise was struck. He is young and if he quits, it would reflect badly on the PAP and will certainly impact future recruitment. The guarantee that they will be looked after in the early as in the Lim Chee Onn matter must have been considered.

PAP also has to be careful not give anyone the opportunity to open another front. Keeping him in the tent was probably the aim.

It would have been better for him to quit altogether like Lui Tuck Yew....Even as Speaker he is still part of the establishment.

Don't think his principles went out the window. If he did, he would still be a minister and in the running for becoming PM.

His rejection suggests that whoever eventually becomes PM will most likely be an amoral, godless person. He will continue the existing PAP policies of enriching a select few at the expense of others. In so doing, he will ensure the continued decline of Singapore.

The PAP is merely trying to retard an inevitable decline. They cannot raise the nation. In the meantime the elite will boost their wealth at the expense of the rest. All this while the idiotic 70% will give them mandate after mandate.

Did TCJ say " good ideas come from both sides of the house " ? Heresy !

This is indeed blasphemy! Even Ah Gong didn't subscribe to this nonsense. If the oppies good ideas get implemented, our reserves would be squandered in a heartbeat.

Are you sure about some previous speakers not even being an MP?....recall late surgeon supremo Yeoh Ghim Seng saying boh bian had to do 'national service' and become an MP as Harry asked him to become Speaker....apparently Yeoh really hated being an MP because of the 'grimy' hoi polloi constituents!

As for TCJ....never in the running for PM....too soft and flaky.....won't forgot his silly comments over the ministerial pay issue....when he said that he had to give up his family time, including spending time with his aged parents, so pay cannot be cut too much!.....i mean plz lah!!...

Bro, the speaker of Parliament does not even have to be an elected MP. 3 of our previous speakers were not even MP.

We also operate the Westminster model where the Executive must come from the legislature. There is no separation of power between the legislature and the executive.

In the US model where there is a clear separation of power, it's the institution and not the individual except the Executive branch headed by the President. Both the majority leaders of House and Senate are similar to whips only. There is no leader of legislature.

There were 2 non-MP speakers during the pre/early years of independence. Legally speaking, one does not need to be an MP to be nominated for the speakership though in practice almost all of them were.

As for TCJ's "soft and flaky" disposition, it pretty much applies to most of the candidates in the running for future PM anyway.

Oehlers, Punch and AP were not MPs. The constitution still allows it today.

Heard the same about Yeoh.

TCJ I agree was not PM material but certainly political asset and cabinet material compared to some of his colleagues including his successor, Desmond. Th word is "God and values" has got issues with some cabinet decisions.

As with george yeo, you are blinded by religion. A man with a good heart, regardless of religion will not make comments tan did about elderly colllecting cardboard for exercises.

he's a boy scout "scholar" not a bona fide general.

How true! Throw a coin, and it will find a "general" in Singapore.
Only a country punching above its weight will have "generals" who have NEVER ever seen battle.
No better than the corporate guys who paid for degrees so they can call themselves "Dr"
