A needy family in Singapore was thrown into more debt by their Town Council after they couldn’t pay Service and Conservancy Charges for about two years, from August 2015 to April 2017.
Activist Gilbert Goh shared the family’s plight on his Facebook page and shared a photo of an arrears letter the family received which shows that they owe $718.75 in conservancy charges.
Shockingly, the Town Council charged the family a penalty fee of $249 and legal fees of $721.05 – increasing their total fees to $1688.80
The Town Council warned that the family would have to make payment “within 10 days from the date of notice” or to contact the office.
If they fail to do so, legal action would be initiated against the family.
Goh says that the family has been struggling with under-employment and is trying its best to cope with the high cost of living in Singapore.
He quipped, referencing PM Lee’s National Day Rally speech on the government’s plans to increase cashless transactions in the country:

I've informed the good PM that he had been disgraced by this freeloading family, who is now being used by Botak Goh to shame the TC into waiving the fees. That's basically what leeches in the west are doing.

Till today, PAP have not explained why a tenant must pay for the Service and Conservancy charges for his flat. Shouldn't that be the owner's responsibility.?

I have to agree with you. Singapore has a chronic labour shortage which is why so many foreigners come to Singapore to work.

Landlords have to pay for the overheads of my property in NZ but all that means is that these overheads are factored into the rental.

Pap town councils take residents to court over the smallest amount of arrears.
They do this to give business to their crony law firms and to earn late fees which btw is higher % than bank's credit card late fees.
Gilbert should go to night court and see the long lines of residents kena sue by Pap town councils.
Those who got no money to pay up will have to go to jail.....and mind you it's not in default. The ballooning arrears plus penalties and more legal fees piled on will be waiting for you upon release from prison.

There are many in jail over town council arrears.
That's the beauty of it.
Bankrupt need 10k debt then kena sue.
Town council arrears will never run into that amount.... pap will sue you at few hundred....2-3 months default.

in Singapore, government is very smart to split various expenses into small portions and you have to pay these small portion of expenses to various governmental agencies.
If you add up these small expenses items, the amount is significantly huge and higher than in USA and NZ.

nothing is more expensive than the u.s., especially in commie california, where state legislators want to tax the use of drinking water. water districts, independent from the state gov, which manage water resources are opposed to that move as they believe water is a citizen's right and should not be taxed. they collect revenue from water by charging residents water bills based on use. this is nothing but a turf war between state legislators and water districts. next legislators will propose taxing the use of air. these corrupt officials are constantly looking for new revenue sources to jack up their own renumerations. compared to californians, sinkies are lucky they don't have commies in charge.
