("Mdm Halimah Yacob announcing she will contest the upcoming Presidential Election on Sunday (Aug 6).")

SINGAPORE: Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob confirmed on Sunday (Aug 6) that she intends to contest the upcoming Presidential Election, which has been reserved for Malay candidates.

Speaking at a National Day dinner at the Marsiling Mega Sports Park, the Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC Member of Parliament said: "I recognise that the position of the elected President has the tremendous capacity to do good for all Singaporeans and for Singapore.

"Hence, I wish to inform you that I will be contesting in the coming Presidential Election."

Mdm Halimah also said she will be resigning from her roles as Speaker of Parliament and Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC MP on Monday.

Mdm Halimah first publicly expressed her interest in the presidency in July, after Bourbon Offshore Asia chairman Farid Khan Kaim Khan formally announced his candidacy bid.

She said she was “thinking about it” as it was a “heavy responsibility” that should not be taken lightly. Mdm Halimah also said it was not a decision to be made alone and that she needed to consult her colleagues and family members.

Since then, Mdm Halimah’s heritage has come under some discussion. Under recent changes to the elected presidency, this year’s vote is reserved for the Malay community. Mdm Halimah’s late father was Indian-Muslim.

However, at a post-Hari Raya gathering of women leaders last month, the 62-year-old said she has been “certified four times by the Community Committee as a member of the Malay community”.

The committee is responsible for ascertaining if candidates belong to a particular racial community.

Mr Farid has also said he is confident of qualifying as a Malay candidate even though his identity card identifies him as “Pakistani”.

A third potential candidate is Mr Mohamed Salleh Marican, CEO of Second Chance Properties.

This year's Presidential Election will be held in September. Applications for opened on Jun 1 and will close five days after the writ of election is issued in August.

"Speaker Halimah Yacob to run for President"

SINGAPORE — Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob has announced that she will run for the highest office in the land, weeks after revealing that she was mulling over contesting next month's Presidential Election (PE).

Announcing her candidacy at a National Day dinner for the Marsiling-Yew Tee Group Representation Constituency on Sunday (Aug 6), she said: "I have served a period of 40 years in public service...Taking part in the Presidential election would allow me to continue with my service to the people of Singapore, including Marsiling residents, although in a different capacity.

"I recognise that the position of the Elected President has a tremendous capacity to do good for all Singaporeans and for Singapore. Hence I wish to inform you that I will be contesting in the coming Presidential election."

Mdm Halimah the third person to have declared their candidacy for the election. She is the only candidate so far who checks all the boxes of the eligibility criteria, having spent at least three years in a key public office.

If elected in the country's inaugural reserved PE next month, she will be the Republic's first woman President.

The two other candidates who have previously announced their plans to contest are: Mr Mohamed Salleh Marican, the chief executive of Second Chance Properties, and Mr Farid Khan Kaim Khan, chairman of marine service provider Bourbon Offshore Asia Pacific.

The coming PE will be reserved for the Malay community. This comes after changes to the Elected Presidency scheme, passed in Parliament in November last year, to ensure that a reserved election will be triggered for a particular race that has not seen an elected representative for five consecutive terms.

Political analysts had noted that Mdm Halimah would be a frontrunner in the race, given her track record in public service.

Mdm Halimah, 62, entered politics in 2001, and has been a Member of Parliament (MP) in Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC since the General Election in 2015. Other MPs in the constituency include Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong, Mr Alex Yam and Mr Ong Teng Koon.

To contest in the PE, Mdm Halimah would have to vacate her posts as Speaker and MP, and resign from the People’s Action Party by Nomination Day.

She said on Sunday that she would be resigning from her posts as Speaker and MP on Monday, when she hands in her resignation letter to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Three weeks ago, Mdm Halimah told reporters that she had been considering throwing her hat in the ring, and needed “a bit of time” to think it over. The presidency is a “very heavy responsibility and important institution”, but many residents had encouraged her to run, she said then.

    This story is developing.

SINGAPORE — Mdm Halimah Yacob, 62, has a long record of public service, having first entered politics as a Member of Parliament for Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in 2001.

A decade later, she was made Minister of State (MOS) in the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports in 2011. She held that portfolio for about a year, before moving on to the Ministry of Social and Family Development in 2012.

After former Speaker of Parliament Michael Palmer stepped down abruptly in December 2012 due to an extramarital affair, Mdm Halimah became the first female Speaker in January 2013 - a post which she has held since.

During the General Elections in 2015, Mdm Halimah moved out of Jurong GRC to contest in the newly-formed Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC.

Prior to entering politics, Mdm Halimah studied law at the National University of Singapore on a Muis scholarship, graduating with an honours degree in 1978. She received a Masters of Laws from the same university in 2001.

Entering the workforce, Mdm Halimah joined the National Trades Union Congress as a legal officer. She climbed the ranks to become the director of the Legal Services Department and director of the Women’s Development Secretariat, and subsequently, Deputy Secretary-General of the labour movement.

On the international arena, Mdm Halimah, a mother of five, was the first Singaporean to be elected into the International Labour Organisation.

Among the aspirants who have declared their intention to contest in the Presidential Election (PE), Mdm Halimah is the only one who checks all the boxes of the eligibility criteria, having spent at least three years in a key public office.

Mr Khan and Mr Marican may not meet the eligibility criteria for the PE. Among other things, the two men’s respective companies do not have at least S$500 million in shareholders’ equity, which is required for private-sector candidates.

The Presidential Elections Committee can exercise discretion under the “deliberative” track, which qualifies candidates if they satisfy the committee that they have held “similar or comparable position of seniority and responsibility in any other organisation or department of equivalent size or complexity”.

If the other two don't qualify for the requirements to run for president as individuals from private sector, then it will be walkover for Halimah.

While sinkies may laugh and jeer, this is certainly not a joke for our good mud community. Anyone who is a muslim, speaks melayu, eat melayu and dress melayu, is a mud. Even a nigger or a chink can be a mud. Our first lady is a good example. She is biologically chink by birth but changed her ethnicity to mud. So why can't Halimah do the same?

Besides, there's no benefit being a keling in this part of the world. Hinduism is not the predominant religion around here.

You are not a mud because you are not a muslim.

You basically described a baba. Everywhere mud except for religion. Hence, not even 1% mud.

I would do the "raping". We play sex games at night. Sometimes I whip her. Tonight I shall 'rape' her. She likes these kinky games. We have a great sex life as a married couple unlike most samsters and sinkies.
