Nazi Germany was a good friend of Nationalist China during the 1930s. without Hitler and Germany's great help, China would find it very difficult to hold out against the 1937 Japanese invasion, especially during the early stage of the war. Chinese people have no ww2 historical baggage with Germany at all, only gratitude for Germany's support back then.

To be fair, the great leap forward was a dumb vanity project which had disastrous consequences. Not a deliberate mass murder attempt. That's the danger of having an idealist leader pretending to be an economist.
More importantly that's the danger of an authoritarian dictator in charge of the whole country
