A sailor on board a U.S. Navy destroyer in the South China Sea has disappeared, officials told Fox News Tuesday.
The sailor was reported missing from the USS Stethem approximately 140 miles west of Subic Bay in the Philippines. An official said the missing officer had checked in aboard the ship a short time before the disappearance.
The disappearance was first reported by Defense News.
Last month, the Stethem sailed within 12 nautical miles of Triton Island, which is claimed by China, Vietnam and Taiwan as part of ongoing territorial disputes in the South China Sea.

This is the second time this summer the Navy is carrying out a major search-and-rescue operation in the Pacific. In June, a missing sailor on the cruiser USS Shiloh, who had been presumed lost at sea, was found hiding in the ship's engine room. The sailor, Petty Officer 3rd Class Peter Mims, was later charged with dereliction of duty.

WASHINGTON — A sailor from the destroyer Stethem is missing in the South China Sea, U.S. Pacific Fleet confirmed Tuesday, triggering a search-and-rescue operation inside the contested waters.
The sailor was reported missing at 9 a.m. local time on Tuesday. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer Sazanami and helicopter carrier Izumo were assisting in search-and-rescue efforts early Wednesday morning local time, U.S. Pacific Fleet said.
Joint Personnel Recovery Center Hawaii is also assisting in the search.
This is the second major search-and-rescue effort in the Asia-Pacific region this summer. The first one in June ended after a 50-hour search off Okinawa, only to discover days later the the missing sailor had been hiding in the engineering spaces.
The Navy lost a sailor earlier in June off the cruiser Normandy off the coast of North Carolina.

美国海军说，一名“斯特塞姆”号驱逐舰上的士兵星期二早上9点被报告在南海失踪，当时那艘驱逐舰位于菲律宾苏比克湾西部约140英里，也就是约225公里处。美国和日本的船只、飞机加入了搜寻。

客观说，今天不是1937年了，当下的中外力量对比和地缘政治大形势都已不可同日而语，时代方向也已不同。南海没有紧张到临战状态，美日也没有对中国开启战争的决心。因此这件事演变成为一场惊天动地南海事变的序曲，可能性极小。
今年6月的时候，美军“希洛”号导弹巡洋舰在冲绳附近也丢了一名士兵，美军大动干戈，在舰上和海上同时找了2天，直到第3天发现，这名士兵躲在了“希洛”号的轮机舱的一个角落。他当时目光呆滞，被疑患上了战地创伤应激综合征。不排除这次“斯特塞姆”号舰上士兵失踪也是一个类似故事。
不过，中国网民的这种警惕反应有很深层的原因，因此这一动向恰恰值得美方高度重视。不仅历史会向现实投射，这一联想被当成一种敏锐在不太了解中美关系实际情形的网民中间广泛传播，更重要的是，它反映了美国的外交形象如今在中国越来越差，把它与军国主义的日本相提并论也不显得扎眼。
可以肯定地说，绝大多数中国人都深信美国来南海不是为了和平，它就是来搞地缘政治、找中国麻烦的。所以当有人敲“南海版卢沟桥事变”的警钟时，即使其中有人是在抖“地缘政治脑筋急转弯”的“包袱”，也让人感到几分贴切。
我们认为，有必要在此提醒美国海军，他们对失踪士兵的搜寻不应伤害中国在南海的主权和权益，也不要借这次搜寻行动危害中国的安全。如果他们需要中方提供人道主义支持，协助搜救，应通过两军正常渠道沟通。美方切不要因这件事强化中国公众对美不良战略意图的怀疑。
南海局势总的来说朝着缓和方向变化，围绕南海行为准则框架的谈判取得了进展，中菲恢复了友好，中越展现出和平解决摩擦的能力。现在南海局势的不确定性几乎都来自域外国家的干预，而美国是这种战略不安的总源头。
希望失踪美军士兵最终被平安找到，即使找不到，也莫影响南海的平静。特朗普总统上半年批准了美国海军在南海搞“航行自由行动”的一揽子方案，美国将军们今后搞巡航的批准流程有所简化，军方的自行裁量权实际扩大了。换句话说，美国海军有了影响中美关系的更多权力。
权力大，责任就重。美国海军会出几个类似当年日本关东军或者驻华北日军里的激进军官，把中美关系引向对抗吗？我们希望这种猜想被最终证明是荒诞的，美军将不齿当年日军的那种角色。
