Chitchat Power-Assisted Bikes need registration from 14th August

SINGAPORE: The compulsory registration of power-assisted bicycles, or e-bikes, will begin on Aug 14, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced on Wednesday (Aug 2).

Last year, the Active Mobility Panel suggested that e-bikes be registered to facilitate enforcement against errant riders and those who illegally modify their bicycles, a recommendation the Government accepted.

E-bike users have until Jan 31 next year to register their devices and affix them with a number plate. After this date, it will be an offence to keep or use an unregistered e-bike without a valid number plate on public roads or paths, LTA said in a news release.

E-bike users who fail to register their bicycles face a fine of up to S$2,000 and up to three months in jail for the first offence. Those caught using an e-bike without a valid number plate displayed are liable to a fine of up to S$1,000 and up to three months in jail.

FEE WAIVED FOR E-BIKES WITH SEALS UNTIL END-NOVEMBER

E-bike users that obtained LTA's orange seal before Aug 14 will qualify for a waiver of the S$50 registration fee until Nov 30, the authority said. The seals show that the vehicles have been inspected and meet the latest technical requirements.

These users can register their e-bikes online on the One Motoring website, or at any SingPost branch with their identification documents and LTA seal number.

Owners of e-bikes without valid seals, on the other hand, must first obtain these for their vehicles. They can do so by sending the e-bikes to LTA Authorised Inspection Centres, which will register the e-bikes and issue the seal if the device meets the necessary technical requirements. The S$50 registration fee and other fees for inspection, approval and affixing of the seal will apply in these cases, LTA said.

E-bike owners have to be at least 16 years old to register their devices.

Upon successful registration, owners will have three days to affix the number plate bearing the assigned registration number to the rear of their bikes, the statutory board added.

Registered e-bikes can be sold, but owners have to transfer the registration online through One Motoring within seven days of passing the bike to the buyer. A transfer fee of S$11 will be charged.

The registration of e-bikes aims to enhance enforcement against reckless riding and the use of non-compliant bikes. This will improve the safety of other path and road users, especially pedestrians, LTA said.

According to the news release, the authority will distribute brochures and posters islandwide to inform e-bike owners of the new registration requirement and its officers will engage retailers to help them better understand the new requirement.

What do you expect of the pappies when they are desperate for money, now....everywhere and anything also price increase...but strange inflation less than 2%.

Highly anticipated move by lta....$50 a chop, say 50,000 ebikes to be registered, plus registration fees upon sale and transfer...just like motor cars....THIS IS GOOD MONEY, IN THE MILLIONS ANNUALLY, MAN.

The scholar in lta who worked out this scheme and had it implemented will be expecting another one or two months extra bonus come end of the year.....of course, provided he did not cock up the scheme or some other assignment.....really good money as a servile serpent....:(

No wonder johnny tanny wants his sons to be scholars and learn to kiss pappy ass from young age....LOL

Pls DON'T EVER TRUST INFLATION NUMBERS:
what is the reference basket of goods and how easy is it to check what is in the reference basket??!!

E.g. If high class toilet paper were in the prrvious basket but now it is newspaper or tap water to wash butt: would you know?
If in 1990s lunch was rice with 2 meat 1veg side dishes but now is more rice with just one egg/ toufu with cucumber: it is still a meal but much cheaper.

Inflation numbers are just for the gahmen to manipulate and part of the gahmen propaganda apparatus, so best not to trust.

Better to be specific: e.g. Median price of mix vegetables rice/ fishball noodles etc with photo example, costs of public transport of say 15kms from point A-B, cost of stage 4 colon cancer treatment, cost of dr consult for normal child with fever, cost of kindergarten attendance, cost of renting HDB flat for 2 yrs in suburbs 300m from MRT station, price of most popular single burger at McDonald's (sufficient for one meal) etc etc.

Yeah about bloody time..another one that should be registered is bicycles...for those cyclists etc. They should pay road tax and be licensed n insured and be liable. If cycling enthusiasts can afford to spend thousands on a bike. They can jolly we'll pay licence n insurance n road tax...fucking bunch of trouble makers.

I'm with you on this. I cycle recreationally, but as a car driver I have zero tolerance for these ang mo Tour de France wannabes (and their local hangers-on) who hog the entire lane two or three abreast, fantasizing that they're freewheeling through a pass in the Pyrenees, and who have the temerity to showin the bird to any motorist who honks at them.

Licensing apart, LTA should come down hard on these road 'terrorists'. (The other group is Malaysian motorcyclists, but I'll stop my rant here.)

Enough bloody cars on the roads already, this country is already congested and polluted enough.if oppo wins the election, they should reduce, cut the number of coes issued each year by half and let the rest expire, there should be designated cycling paths on every road and every street like Ang moh countries, anyone caught driving on these lanes or making illegal turns should be summoned and license revoked, this world should belong to the young and about people on their bikes and scooters and eco friendly zero/low emission transport.not the old fucking cunts sitting in their Lexus and Audi gas guzzlers that used two tons of metal and earth resources to make.this world should belong to the frugal and minimalists.on weekends all cars should be banned from the road.except for public transport and taxis.the reason we live in a city is so that we are close to everything, there should be no reason for driving at all.

Ban cars better,no need hear drivers bitch about parking, clean out all carparks.studies show 1/3rd of land used for residential area is used for parking, imagine how much land we can free up.

Half fuck measure of PAP don't solve the e-bike safety crisis at all. Same as bicycles - which are unregistered.

1stly their registration number plate will be too tiny to be seen by cameras, so they will not fuck care to BEAT RED LIGHT, GO AGAINST TRAFFIC, USE HANDPHONE WHILE ON THE ROAD, Drunk DUI on ROAD ETC.

2ndly they have NO INSURANCE at all. So they will CAUSE ACCIDENTS & ONLY MOTORISTS BEAR LOSSES.

3rdly they have NO LICENSE NOR DEMERIT POINTS at all. They Can Not Be DISQUALIFIED nor BANNED.

4thly they do Learn or get Tested on Highway Code, Traffic Rules Etc, and are ALWAYS LAWLESS, and VIOLATE ALL RULES, and be IRRESPONSIBLE at all times.

Registration or no Registration STILL BOH CHENG HU TOTALLY! Unfair and Unequal to Motorists who bear so much COST + RISK + LIABILITY + LIMITATIONS.

10 years ago I was already arguing for cycling lanes. Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Kyoto ... they all have them. At the same time make our MRT and buses world class. Get rid of all the stupid surcharges and reduce cab rentals so that taxis would ply the roads once again like those in BKK, HK & NY. Then more Sinkies would cycle and rely on public tpt, including myself.

What happened? More bus routes were slashed to prevent cannibalisng MRT profits, trains started breaking down cos maintenance was neglected, one million ppl were imported in 10 years increasing the demand for both pte and public tpt, COEs shot through the roof, ERP gantries sprouted like mushrooms and off-peak gridlock became the new norm.

And still no cycling lanes, just some park connectors which don't take you anywhere near your workplace. Pedestrians and joggers struggle daily with bicycles and PMDs on pavements because the roads have become too dangerous to ride on. And then Uber and Grab came in and whipped the fat asses of these multi-million dollar remunerated tpt chiefs.

Let's not even talk about renewables, which China and India are already investing heavily in.

I'm with you. It's a failure at all kevels of government: manpower planning, land pricing, environmental protection, population policy, public transportation, infrastructure development ...

That's why I say yellow, country had been on autopilot ever since Loong came to power. Sissy has been playing soduko and Facebook during office hours and wasting public resources for his family feud. Nation in decline and standards of excellence fallen across the board under his watch. When is LKY rising from the grave to slap this useless bum?

CAT F COE for Ebike very soon!!! HUAT AH!!!

It is only a matter of time.

Khaw : It is only fair that all users of the road be subject to the same policy. Otherwise, everyone who can easily afford a e-bike will pile onto the road causing congestion.

But don't forget, with just this half fucked policy, money is already going to flow into the pappies coffers from 14 Aug 17.

The next target of course will be the mass of different types of bicycles and mobility vehicles....forget about enforcing, forget about need for safety...just go pappy there to register and pay money....then ever more money will flow in....happy like fuck for some servile serpents who will be expecting additional bonuses at end of the year....
