'Make In India' rifle manufacturer rejected by Indian Army hits back at forces' criticism

New Delhi: Government run manufacturer, Ordnance Factory Board (OFB), whose 'Make in India' rifles were rejected by the Indian Army has slammed the forces, stating that their home-made assault rifles "functioned flawlessly without any stoppages".

According to a media report a few weeks ago, the Army had rejected the rifles for myriad reasons including their being too noisy and indiscreet for combat. The army stated that the rifle "requires comprehensive design analysis and improvement".

Dr. U Mukherjee, the spokesperson of the gun manufacturer, told the media that a top Army General had fired the rifle and found it to work amazingly well. Since the Indian Army requires 1,85,000 Assault Rifles, the total value of the contract comes up to a massive Rs.1850 crores.

Upon testing OFB's rifles, the Army had advised "complete redesigning of the magazine to make loading the rifle easier".

There were also an "excessive number of faults and stoppages (during trials) to the extent of more than twenty times the maximum permissible standards," the army had stated.

NEW DELHI: The Army has rejected an indigenously built assault rifle, citing poor quality and ineffective fire power, and is soon likely to take a fresh call on procuring similar weapons to replace the INSAS rifles.

The Army decided to reject the 7.62x51 mm guns built by the Rifle Factory Ishapore after they miserably failed the firing tests last week.

Official sources said there were "excessive number of faults" in the guns and "complete redesigning of the magazine" was needed to consider the guns to be used by the Army.

"Excessive flash and sound signature" were observed in the rifles during the trials, they said adding reliability aspect of the weapons needs comprehensive analysis.

The rifles had excessive number of faults and stoppages to the extent of more than twenty times the maximum permissible standards, the sources said.

The Army last year had rejected another indigenously- built assault rifle called the 5.56 mm Excalibur guns as it did not meet the required standards.

A high-level meeting is being convened tomorrow to decide about procurement of assault rifles for the armed forces. The meeting is likely to deliberate on specifications required for the assault rifles.

The meeting is being attended by representatives of the Army, the Air Force and the Navy besides top officials of the Defence Ministry.

The Army last year had floated Request for Proposal for the assault guns and around 20 firms had responded to it.

The Army badly needs the assault rifles it is learnt to have been disappointed over delay in their procurement.

Modernisation Drive: Indian Army To Buy 185,000 Assault Rifles And Protective Gear

Modernisation Drive: Indian Army To Buy 185,000 Assault Rifles And Protective Gear
Indian Army set to get new rifles

The Indian Army, which is set to abandon its two-decade-old indigenously made INSAS rifles, will soon begin the process of acquiring 185,000 assault rifles, along with armour and helmets, to outfit its infantry with more up-to-date equipment. The move is a part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s $250 billion push to modernise India’s armed forces.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar had issued a request for information last month, according to which, the army needs 7.62 mm rifles, 65,000 in number, within 28 months of signing the contract. Global manufacturers have been requested to reply by 7 November as India plans to issue a tender for procuring rifles in April 2017.

As we reported earlier, the acquisition process has suffered from constant road blocks. Parrikar had on Wednesday (26 October) scrapped a tender for procurement of 45,000 rifles for the Indian Army at the cost of Rs 1,000 crore amid serious allegations of corruption in the acquisition process. These rifles were to be provided to the counter-terrorism units of the army for the elimination of infiltrators at a close range.

The matter was under investigation over the possibility of favours being given to Israeli firm, Israeli Weapons Industry (IWI), over its other rivals in the deal.

The initial tender for 44,600 close quarter carbines (rifles) was issued by the Indian Army in 2010. Rifles from two different vendors, IWI and Italian Beretta, were selected for field trials. While 28 companies had shown interest in the tender in the first stage, Israeli firm was the only vendor left in the final phase. The Defence Ministry, when necessary, allows single vendor cases to be pursued, but it usually prefers only multi-vendor tenders at the final stage to benefit from competition in cost negotiations.

The irregularities in the procurement process were brought to notice by Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh during the Defence Acquisition Council meeting in June. According to sources, the Defence Ministry has now asked the army to restart the tender process under a fast-track, multi-vendor model.

Why not buy from China? It's cheap and reliable. Maybe they can order it from Taobao?

Otherwise, buy from Singapore. Our SAR-21 assault rifle is very reliable. Will kill many chinks if war breaks out in the Himalayan mountains. We have CECA treaty in place, which makes it easy for sinkies to go over to kelingland to work as middle management and engineers.

During my NS the SAF did buy ammo from India e.g. 75mm tank rounds. Heard that it was common for these rounds to misfire or go short:biggrin:

I share a view of Google Map of an air force airport in New Delhi :

https://www.google.com.sg/maps/@28.5869641,77.2048113,1858m/data=!3m1!1e3

The Indian Air Force School is on the north west end (top left) of it's runway, the south side is Delhi Flying Club AAI Officer's club etc. Safdarjun Airport is the name

PAY FULL ATTENTION TO HOW CURVED is the runway! Their pilots are snakes to take off and land there! No accident? Just like their trains with million Ah Neh on the roof!

They can have runway as bend as Race Course Road, where SG52 had Riots:

WORLD CLASS QUALITY. And I bet PAP is hiring Ah Neh to build Changi Airport Runway!

we bought their discarded AMX-13, so they threw in the ammo cheap cheap too. I mean what were they going to do with it? They don;t have any weapons systems that use the 75mm ammo. Ammo was fine. Later on, CIS wanted the contract to make the 75mm rounds so they can charge SAF $400 per round. I think the Indian ammo less then $50 each at that time. Ammo price escalated once CIS had the contract and cornered the market. I think they cost over $750 per round by the time the AMX-13 was retired. Don't know why we did not buy the French Army stocks. The HE rounds keep for a long time. a frugal and prudent MINDEF procurement department would have scoured the whole looking for surplus AMX-13 75mm rounds at very cheap prices. CIS only need to make a small amount for combat purposes, the rest bought from overseas can be training ammo. I am sure the Jews and the French had hundreds of thousands of rounds they need to get rid off, and we were going through that shit like it was water. But the word frugal is no longer in the vocab of MINDEF.

Don't be an idiot, they are enemies, why would they buy from China? Its like the Russians buying M4s from the US.

There is a lot more then meets the eye here. The Indians had a licensing deal with the Russians for AK-47s/AKMs. wonder what happened to that. If they want new assault weapons for their army, it will be a lot cheaper and faster to just buy them from Russia or some former Easter Bloc country that used to make them. The Bulgarians, Hungarians, and Poles come to mind. They are then committed to the Warpac 7.62mm ammo, but that is an ammo they are familiar with. Something not right going on here.

Actually I did see boxes of 75mm rounds from both India & Europe. I was told that the European rounds were bought second hand from Europe. I think from France?

This was from at a time when Mindef was still purchasing plenty of 2nd had military equipment e.g. A4 Skyhawks, AMX 13, M113, recoiless rifles, ... Back then the newest Spore aircraft was the Northrop F-5E II and the secret Soltam 155 howitzer

China is busy taking over pinoy and mudland seas. Yet, chinkland is supplying them with cheap or even free military hardware, including naval vessels.

The US have bought huge quantities of russian AKs and ammos for their client state in afghanistan.

Whatever is free amd cheap, take it. Then use it on the enemy, like what genghis khan used to do. China used to send ransom but was invaded eventually.

Fortunately Ah Neh army is smart enough to reject their own brand rifles, or else they will run out of own brand coffins once the war starts with Chinese.

Chinks send ransom because it was cheaper to pay up than to lose larger sums of monies in the wars. The chinks on paper have more men, more horses and better tech than their neighbours. Yet, the chinks could never conquer the barbarians up north.

Fortunately, the chinks are now facing the kelings, a similarly large civilization with the paper potential to do well but yet manages to screw up massively each time. On paper, the kelings should have rocked the world. Yet history has shown that smaller muslim armies have successively raided and slaughtered millions of kelings in one-sided campaigns most of the time.

The chinks are just lucky that their keling enemies are more fucked up than they are.
