COMMENT: An elephant in the room lurks in the Lee family feud

P N Balji,Yahoo News Singapore

[FONT=&amp]It is good that that Lee Wei Ling and Lee Hsien Yang want a truce. It is not good that they have repeated the allegations and made new accusations against their older brother and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. That is not how wounds are healed.

The three-week old Lee family fight has split the country five ways: one group is fed up with all that has been going on, another is arguing that dirty laundry should not be aired in public, two are taking sides and a smaller group does not want to take a stand as the full truths are not out yet.

The two-day Parliamentary session earlier this week was extraordinary, with PM Lee standing before MPs and responding to serious charges of abuse of power, nepotism and conflict of interest from his own siblings. PM Lee walked a tightrope trying to balance between family and country, and hoped to seek closure. That was not to be as the accusers were not there to reply to or reject arguments made. It left a sour taste in every Singaporean’s mouth.

A total of 35 Ministers and Members of Parliament spent 11 hours over two days in Parliament, some making pointed remarks, some others praising PM Lee and yet others saying that the House of Singapore was more important than 38 Oxley Road.

We saw opposition leader Low Thia Khiang at his vintage best, saying that he is giving the benefit of doubt to the PM but keeping an open mind. PAP MP Rahayu Mahzam raised the bar when she said the PM’s statutory declaration on how the late Lee Kuan Yew’s will was signed may come across as a back-door approach to challenging the will. And of course, how not to mention ESM Goh Chok Tong’s comment directed at the siblings that they were trying to bring the PM down?

As a tense House debated the allegations, every one ignored the lurking elephant in the room. The issue of conflict of interest loomed large yet no one talked about it.

This is not something new, having surfaced time and again since 1984, when Hsien Loong was brought into politics by Goh. He made quick progress and 20 years later became PM.

Those who have worked with Hsien Loong, including a former civil servant friend of mine, will vouch for his talent and capacity to zero in on issues and come up with solutions quickly. “He saw things which we never saw,” said the friend. But there was hardly a public debate that he is Lee Kuan Yew’s son and that they sat in the same Cabinet room when the older Lee was still PM.

Then came Ho Ching’s appointment as the CEO of Temasek Holdings in 2002 and the whole issue of conflict of interest had to be revisited. What made the appointment even more of a talking point was that Hsien Loong was not only her husband but her boss. He was Finance Minister then and technically she had to report to him.

Goh Chok Tong became the artificial firewall to separate the two when it came to reporting procedures. It was said at that time that she was the best person for the job but no evidence was provided to show the type of candidates who were interviewed for the job and why they did not make it.

It looks like such appointments have become more frequent with foreigners being given top jobs here trying to find jobs for their spouses, and if they are unsuccessful, then being given places in organisations and institutions they run. I was shocked when an American boss introduced his wife to me and said without even batting an eyelid, “She works here.” Would he have done it back home in his country, I wonder.

The Workers’ Party is not beyond reproach. The town council mess they have got into is mainly as a result of giving the contract to run the council to their own people.

Sometimes the lines get so blurred that conflict of interest situations are not so clear but appear later.

Lee Suet Fern, Hsien Yang’s wife, is a board director of the National Heritage Board and offered to help with a deal to get items from the Oxley Road house and donate them for an exhibition on the country’s founding fathers in 2015. NHB did not spot the potential for a conflict of interest, and realised a little later that it was being dragged into the private family dispute and told her to recuse herself from discussion on the issue.

Again, Lucien Wong’s appointment as Attorney-General has raised similar concerns. He was 63 and was replacing a person who had reached retirement age at 60. Then news came out that he acted for PM Lee in the family fight. The PM said he had informed the Cabinet and the President about it but was that enough? People who know Wong say that he is the right man for the job but as lawyer Jeanette Chong-Aruldoss said in a Facebook post, “It can’t be said that Lucien is the only man who qualifies for the job of AG.”

The PM and his team need to hit the pause button and ask themselves if a firm line should be drawn on such future appointments to prevent any talk of conflict of interest cropping up. If any person with a possible conflict of interest is not ruled out, it is highly likely that another highly charged situation will confront the country down the road. Like what we have been bedevilled with in the last three weeks.

Good article but like many of the views expressed here and in the international press (eg Andrew Shuen of HK) is its impact on the 70% and how they will act/react -esp in the next election. Ultimately people (or sheeps?) get the government they deserve

nepotism - patronage bestowed or favoritism shown on the basis of family relationship, as in business and politics:
http://www.dictionary.com/browse/nepotism

Corruption is a form of dishonest or unethical conduct by a person entrusted with a position of authority, often to acquire personal benefit..... 'political', corruption occurs when an office-holder or other governmental employee acts in an official capacity for personal gain.

It is called ownself check ownself which is what 69.9% of sinkies voted for. They even almost voted out WP in Aljunied for this ownself check ownself nonsense.

Ask sinkies lah. They have the answer why.

It was Rajaratnam who evidently was asked by old man to induct LHL into PAP

Temasek Job: GCT claimed he interviewed Wong Kok Siew who was a fren of mine. BUT he did not say if WKS was interested in the job. Also sg has a larger pool of talents than what Woody wanted to see. He got an agenda or instruction and he had roll along given track - not deviation allowed or wood can become charcoal.

Neither was there record that the then FM interviewed WKS or other eminently qualified talent foreign or otherwise. WKS was once co MD with HC in ST Engrg. He was there first but had to share his chair with the woman whose pet is a woolly jap monkey with erect middle finger. It puzzles me that WKS is good enuf to run ST but TH not given to him on a silver plate........... what happened? All I can say is WKS was from a not so rich family who once drove a 800 cc jap car and has not pricky connection to the levers of power. WKS was also chairman of Nomura which I think HC would not hv qualified even with cunnections..........

There are many instances of conflict of interest and LHL is defiantly waiting to rebut with his brigades of consummate liars n twisters. Still got hope for sg given the tyrannical rule?

Yes, surprised by GCT. On record and in number of places - books, press reports, Raja is given credit to "spotting" the talent in the son and asking old man to put him forward.

Again in offical narratives, it was Dhanablan who identified Ho Ching when she was in ST and was brought across to Temasek. The irony behind this is that PSC had a policy of not allowing spouses of key political appointment holders to hold public office then. It was an extension of policy where sr civil servants' spouses were not allowed in the same Department. Ho Ching was moved out of Mindef/DSO to ST for this very reason. It was matter of few years before she shared the same bed as her boss who became MOF and she Temasek head. There were a lot of angst in public service because of this and GCT lost his credibility.

WKS is a class of his own, he is a doer and achiever and PY relied on him to get things done. Nothing was too big for this chap. It is also not in his nature to accept an appt in investment and fund mgmt due to its relative docile nature. Sadly he passed away too early.

There is more and the role of Liew.

He was rather unhappy when HC came aboard as co MD of Sing Tech...... he did all the work while you know who claimed the credit. He tried unsuccessfully to hv PY agree to his leaving.........PY was his boss in Mindeaf but PY knew which side of his bread is buttered. Furthermore PY was one of the two matchmaker btw HC n LHL - sparks flew on Mindeaf grounds opposite Botanic Gardens
HC was only a procurement engr in DMO before she got parachuted into CIS Engrg dept as deputy director, a position specially created for her. She did not complete any project there but reading files seems to be her pre occupation ........ privileged life with silver shaft in there....................

Is Li Hongyi reading files in PMO waiting to be parachuted???

Balji is an interesting fellow.
A shareholder of ex SDP member Kumaran Pillai's independent SG yet chose to post this article on yahoo and not his own website. Used to work for the establishment but now taking occasional potshots at the establishment. Told everyone that he wants to retire to India quite sometime ago yet still around driving all over the place in his Mercedes.

An engineer by training and in practice, here is how she ended in the World of high finance. In 1997, the LHL chaired the Finance Review Committee and Peter Seah from OUB was a committee member. Thus began her interest in Finance. She and hubby were given a tour of OUB and at that time Old Man was lamenting why DBS did not go global like HSBC and concluded that too many local banks and mergers were necessary. Lien Ying Chow was too old and his sons were either not interested or proved incapable. So the trio began their manoeuvring with Dhanabalan as Chairman. The whole endeavour went pear shape resulting in Dhanabalan apologising and paying a $1M each to OUB and UOB but she was hooked. She convinced Dhanabalan that she was a natural and Peter became her sidekick. Husband was appointed Chair of MAS in 98, she is appointed as director of Temasek bu Dhanabalan in Jan 2002. Few months later, husband becomes MOF. Peter Seah becomes her faithful sidekick.

At that time it was clear to all that she was involved in everything that her husband was doing.

As to Hongyi, all signals point to he having no interest in politics and going private. probably envies his younger brother's freedom.

How does MBT fits into this?-as its a well known (and visible) fact that PS is always with MBT and that the bank's senior officers can be seen yearly at the Tampines CCC annual new year's dinner

No idea bro. I wasn't aware of the link except they came from the same school. PY and the SJI cliche regrouped in recent years and they are all part of the group.

HC did not practise engineering whether in Mindeaf DMO or CIS as dy director. Yet she got recognition instigated by PY for Engr of the Year award or something like that. I puked for many days on hearing how a non practising engr got such award.

Hongyi had to say he is not interested in politics but that is at that moment and clearly in defence of his parents. Can you imagine him saying he IS interested in politics and condemn his papa, mama to cesspool not parliament can whitewash? I will only believe him if he make an inrevocable declaration that he is not interested to ever becoming PeeM of sg. A SD wud also be \fine. Also there is nothing to say that ten yrs down the road, he becomes interested in politics - circumstances hv changed, a typical politician's ploy. Refer to Mahababi who is a master of trickery.

Thats life. She was assigned as young"engineer" by Mindef to give career talks to graduating class of Engineers from NUS and NTU. The first 3 minutes the students spent their time figuring out how come a man at the rostrum was talking with a female voice. She had become famous by then.

Announced his retirement but at the last minute was asked to stand against WP Aljunied GRC in 2015. After his 92 appointments embarrassment, all PAP MPs were told not to put their CVs in Parliament website and in public. Some have it but it is threadbare.

he no more MP meh? At least still sits on 100 plus BODs - datz a giant rice silo
