Seven US Navy sailors are missing and at least three are injured, including the commander of the USS Fitzgerald, which collided with a merchant vessel near Yokosuka, Japan, according to a US Pacific Fleet spokesman. US sailors reportedly called the Japanese Coast Guard for assistance.

"There are seven Sailors unaccounted for; the ship and the Japanese Coast Guard continues to search for them," the US 7th Fleet has confirmed. The same account was previously reported by the Japanese Coast Guard to Japanese public TV channel NHK.

Among the injured was the commanding officer of the USS Fitzgerald, Commander Bryce Benson, who is in stable condition after being transferred to US Naval Hospital Yokosuka, according to the 7th Fleet.

"Other injured [sic] are being assessed," the fleet said.

One injured sailor was being evacuated from the US ship by a Japanese Coast Guard helicopter, the US Navy reported earlier.

The crash occurred 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka at 2:30am local time, June 17, according to the US Pacific Fleet.

The Japanese Coast Guard identified the commercial ship as a Philippine container vessel, Sputnik news agency reported.

Medical evacuations reportedly occurred with assistance from the Japanese Coast Guard.

NHK reported that the USS Fitzgerald, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, was rendered "unable to operate" and suffered flooding, Reuters reported.

"The USS Fitzgerald suffered damage on her starboard side above and below the waterline," the US 7th Fleet reported.

The US Pacific Fleet said: "The extent of damage is being determined. The extent of personnel injuries is being determined. The incident will be investigated."

The US 7th Fleet posted on its Facebook page that the destroyer was on its way "back to Yokosuka" at a speed of 3 knots, and being assisted by Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka tugboats.

The flooding was later stabilized and sailors from the USS Dewey guided missile destroyer came aboard to “assist in damage control efforts,” the Navy’s 7th Fleet said.

Last month, a US Navy cruiser collided with a South Korean fishing vessel.

Donald Trump has been criticised for delays in appointing a navy secretary and ambassador to Japan, leaving a communications vacuum as the countries continued their search for seven missing sailors off the east coast of Japan.
The commanding officer of the USS Fitzgerald, Bryce Benson, and two other crew were injured after the vessel collided with a Philippine-registered container ship before dawn on Saturday.
The US has been without an ambassador to Japan since Caroline Kennedy left Tokyo in January.

Her successor, the Tennessee businessman William Hagerty, has attended a Senate confirmation hearing but has yet to take up his post.
Brandon Friedman, a former Obama administration official and co-founder of the McPherson Square Group, a strategic communications firm in Washington, pointed to the absence of an ambassador and navy secretary – two officials who would be expected to take a lead in liaising between the US navy, and Japanese and US government officials during the search.
“The USS Fitzgerald might sink off Japan and the US President can’t call our ambassador or our navy secretary because we have neither,” Friedman said.
Trump’s nominee for US navy secretary, Richard Spencer, has yet to be confirmed by the Senate.
The former financial industry executive and US marine corps captain was tapped for the post after Trump’s first choice for navy secretary, Philip Bilden, withdrew his candidacy in February.
Bilden said that his business ties to Asian financial markets would constitute a conflict of interests and that he was not prepared to divest his financial interests to serve in the position.
At his Senate hearing last month, Hagerty, a key member of Trump’s transition team, stressed Washington’s “ironclad” commitment to its alliance with Japan, calling it “the cornerstone of regional peace and security” and “a platform for global cooperation”.

The area is a busy shipping channel near major container ports in Yokohoma and Tokyo

Seven US sailors were missing and a skipper injured after their Navy destroyer collided with a container ship off the coast of Japan early Saturday, with the badly damaged US vessel partially flooded.

Aerial television footage showed one sailor lying on a stretcher and a rescuer being pulled up to a helicopter that was hovering above the USS Fitzgerald, its right side partially crushed.

Three sailors were injured in the pre-dawn collision, including the guided missile destroyer's commanding officer Bryce Benson.

"Two sailors, in addition to the commanding officer, have been medically evacuated from USS Fitzgerald to US Naval Hospital Yokosuka for lacerations and bruises," the navy said.

"There are seven sailors unaccounted for; the ship and the Japanese Coast Guard continues to search for them."

The accident between the Fitzgerald and Philippine-flagged ACX Crystal happened around 2:30 am (1730 GMT Friday) off the coast off the Izu peninsula southwest of Tokyo, the US Navy and Japan's coastguard said.

The area is a busy shipping channel near major container ports in Yokohoma and Tokyo.

"The volume of ships is heavy in this area and there have been accidents before," coastguard official Yutaka Saito told Japan's public broadcaster NHK.

It was not immediately clear what caused the collision, but NHK said the massive 222-metre (730 foot) container ship made a sharp turn around the time of the accident.

Japan's coastguard, which is probing the incident, has sent five vessels, two planes and a team of specially trained rescue personnel to help in the search for the missing crew, a spokesman said.

The USS Dewey and two Navy tugboats were helping out in the search and rescue, the US military said, while Japan's Self-Defence Forces also joined the operation, sending three ships and several aircraft.
'So worried'

The 154-metre Fitzgerald -- which was commissioned in 1995 and was deployed in the Iraq war in 2003 -- is based in Yokosuka and operates in the Pacific and the Sea of Japan (East Sea).

The accident happened 56 nautical miles (104 kilometres) southwest of Yokosuka, the navy said.

"My daughter is on the Fitzgerald," a parent wrote on the 7th Fleet's Facebook page.

"So worried. Just need to hear she is ok. Thinking of all of our sailors and their families!!"

US chief of naval operations Admiral John Richardson said in a statement: "As more information is learned we will be sure to share it with the Fitzgerald families and when appropriate the public.

"All of our thoughts and concerns are with the Fitzgerald crew and their families."

Video by Japan's public broadcaster NHK showed heavy damage to the right side of the Fitzgerald just ahead of the control tower, and that the ship had taken on water.

An orange hose was visible on the ship's deck, with many crew members seen checking the damage.

The destroyer, piloted by two tugboats, was sailing to Yokosuka.

"The USS Fitzgerald suffered damage on her starboard side above and below the waterline. The collision resulted in some flooding," the Navy said.

The Fitzgerald was still under its own power "although her propulsion was limited", the navy said. It is not in danger of sinking and is headed back to port on its own power.

The footage meanwhile showed relatively light damage to the ACX Crystal.

Twenty crew members were aboard the container and none was injured, another Japanese coastguard spokesman said, adding that the vessel was separately sailing back to a Tokyo port.

"We are now investigating the case as further details, including the weather conditions at the time, are not available," the spokesman said.

The ACX Crystal is a commercial container ship that, according to marine tracking websites, was on its way to Tokyo.

The ship carries a Philippine flag but is listed as owned by Japanese shipping giant NYK Line.
