Higher saturated fat than meat including lard. Watch the price fall dramatically in the same way it went up.

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — Although coconut oil is marketed as a healthier cooking oil option, that may not be true, according to the American Heart Association.

In a study and press release this week, the AHA said it continues to recommend replacing saturated fats with poly- and mono-unsaturated vegetable oil to help prevent heart disease.

It says trials that lowered intake of dietary saturated fat and replaced it with polyunsaturated vegetable oil reduced cardiovascular disease by approximately 30 percent. That’s similar to the percentage achieved by cholesterol-lowering drugs.

Meanwhile, coconut oil, “which is predominantly saturated fat and widely touted as healthy,” raised LDL cholesterol in the same way as other saturated fats found in butter, beef fat and palm oil.

LDL, a.k.a. bad cholesterol, “is a major cause of artery-clogging plaque and cardiovascular disease,” says Dr. Frank Sacks, lead author of the advisory and professor of Cardiovascular Disease Prevention at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston.

In a press release from November, the AHA released a list of common cooking oils that contain more of the “better-for-you” fats and less saturated fat. They are:

Canola
Corn
Olive
Peanut
Safflower
Soybean
Sunflower
“Blends or combinations of these oils, often sold under the name ‘vegetable oil,’ and cooking sprays made from these oils are also good choices, the release said.

Cooking with lard is the bestest! Imagine your char kwey teow or Hokkien prawn noodles without the lard in them...

Be careful not to look at this in isolation. This is the problem with specialists. Note that this report is from AHA.

Saturated fat raises LDL. Yup. Does lower levels of LDL really translate into lower cardiac events? There's been a change in the thinking. Statins lower cardiac risk but whether they do so because they lower LDL is up for debate or maybe even shot down already.

Exposing polyunsaturated oils like Corn, Olive, Canola etc to heat makes them unstable and produce free radicals. this is why Olive oil always comes in a tinted bottle.

Free radicals......link to cancer.

Saturated oils are the safest to cook with as they are stable even in high heat.

Just eat everything in moderation. enjoy your life while you are still alive.

We all have to die eventually. if not heart attacks, then strokes and cancer. You choose.

Thanks . Also solved my mystery of tinted olive oil bottles, a revelation.

There are more than cholesterol and fat in oil. After taking coconut oil, my hair grow faster and drop less. Very tired of such report from a single perspective. There are other benefits

Err there is ZERO cholesterol in cooking oil, coconut oil, olive oil etc.

70-90% of serum cholesterol in your body is manufactured by your liver. Only about 10-30% are from dietary sources.

Consuming saturated fat(oil) is shown to increase serum cholesterol levels.

Thanks for the correction. I am aware that cholesterol is made by our body. Apology for the error. Just felt frustrated that public will be easily taken in by report from renown institution. The report is not wrong but it is looking solely at the angle they want to refute. Just like reports that said the nutritional value of bird nest is equivalent to chicken breast. It is correct if we only look at things like protein ... But there are more then that. such reports give the false impression that coconut oil is same as other oil and bird nest is same as chicken breast. To me it is like saying that cockroach is same as all beetles because based on detailed study all have 6 legs and 2 feelers

I thought the new food science is carbohydrates and sugar is bad for you and is causing a pandemic of obesity and diabetes and coronary disease and insulin resistance and failure of body hormones such as leptin and grelin to regulate appetite and metabolism and blood sugar.

Fat is actually good for you,coconut oil,olive oil,butter,bacon .

Fat doesn't actually makes u fat, insulin turns excess sugar and carbs into fat and deposits them around ur organs and adominal when ur glcogen stores are full, instead of burning it up,which means u feel hungry again soon after u have eaten, because the food u eat is high in sugar and glycemic index, which causes ur blood sugar to spike, which causes ur pancreas to produce a ton of insulin, which converts ur blood sugar to fat stores quickly, which causes ur blood sugar to crash, resulting in u feeling hungry and needing to eat again a few hours later.

To stabilize ur blood sugar levels, avoid foods that are high in sugar and starch, chocolate, candy, cookies, soft drinks, snacks, limit ur portions of carbs like pasta and rice, increase ur intake of vegetables, protein and fat.

There's essential oils that ur body needs but there's no such thing as essential carbs or sugar.ur body can produce all the sugar it needs for energy from other foods

Sugar is a poison,it has the same molecular composition as alcohol which is also a poison, which can only be processed by our liver.

Another side effect of a sugary diet is inflammation of the arteries and blood vessels, which causes ur body to produce more cholesterol to cope with the damage being done to ur blood vessels, why is there cholesterol in the first place, cholesterol is like the antibodies that repairs the damage done to ur body, like firemen attending to a fire.high cholesterol levels means there's a lot of fires going on,what is causing all those fires?

Thats a load of cock, me ol' china.

Read up on why olive oil really comes in tinted bottles. Being low in acidity and high in anti-oxidants, it has a high smoke point and is safe for frying.
Although I wouldn't re-use it …or use it for deep frying….too expensive. Peanut oil is great for that.

Anyway, most of the olive oil sold as extra virgin is spurious in content and usually adulterated with oils of dubious provenance.

Just a few of them pass muster.
