This issue will not drag down Singapore. Singapore is bigger than the Lees. In fact, this matter serves as a timely reminder that power corrupts and there is a sore need to remove conflict of interests in having the PM's wife in Temasek and we need a PM who is not a Lee.

It's a good development for Singapore's governance ... (If and only if we have more matters like this surfacing from time to time).

If you read the foreign press reports, except for cursory reports leaning towards family feud, nothing serious so there will be a minimal or no impact on Singapore. The fact that western journalists know full well what parliamentary select committee can do and yet can't be bothered to raise it suggest that none of this worth spending time over. They probably thought if Singaporeans can't work it out, they deserve this government.

As to your second point which seems to suggest that this Government was working on something with great promise for Singaporeans but have been distracted by this feud is very optimistic - very Eugene like. I cannot recall a single policy since the son took over that changed out fortunes and future for the better. Do you have something in mind? 13 years with nothing to show except for a continued loss of employment for locals, outrageous public housing pricing, sovereignty handed over within a matter of 2 years to under qualified foreigners and the list goes on is a serious issue performance wise. We are the most expensive city for the wrong reasons.

SINGAPORE: Mr Lee Hsien Yang's statement on Sunday (Jul 2) was a "selective and inaccurate account" of his exchanges with the 38 Oxley Road ministerial committee, Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Teo Chee Hean's press secretary said later that day.

In his Facebook post over the dispute regarding Mr Lee Kuan Yew's house, Mr Lee Hsien Yang said the committee was "neither transparent nor proper" and accused his brother, Prime Minister (PM) Lee Hsien Loong, of an "extra-judicial secret attack" by seeking to bypass the court system.

Mr Lee said PM Lee had taken "his grievance on a 'private family matter' to a committee of his subordinates", adding that these subordinates "cannot be the judge of a matter in which (PM Lee) has a direct personal interest".

In a statement issued on Sunday evening, Ms Lee May Lin said the ministerial committee, chaired by DPM Teo, had sought Mr Lee and his sister Dr Lee Wei Ling's views on their father's wishes and thinking in respect of the house in July last year.

She enclosed letters dated Jul 27, 2016 and Aug 24, 2016, in which she said the committee "had made clear" to the two siblings the "purpose and scope" of its work.

The statement read: "The Committee told him clearly that: (1) it was listing the various options for the House, to present to Cabinet; (2) the Committee was not going to make any recommendations; (3) the Government had no intention of making any decision on the House, as long as Dr LWL (Lee Wei Ling) resides there."

In the statement, Ms Lee said that Mr Lee himself acknowledged this and said: "As such, it was clear to all parties involved that the Government was not making an immediate decision on the House, and that no decision may be necessary for another 20-30 years."

The statement reiterated that the ministerial committee is powerless to decide on the validity of the last will and that it is a "matter between (Mr Lee Hsien Yang) and Mr Lee Hsien Loong".

Ms Lee said the circumstances of the last will became relevant because of one part that Mr Lee Hsien Yang was relying on as primary evidence of his father's intent for the house. Both the Lee brothers' views were sought with regard to these circumstances, said the statement.

"Just because Mr Lee Hsien Yang found some questions inconvenient to answer, that does not mean that the Committee abused its power or did wrong," it said.

DPM Teo will provide a fuller explanation in Parliament on Monday, when PM Lee and himself are due to issue ministerial statements on the dispute.

Dear Prime Minister,

"Dear Prime Minister, please think of Country, Family, Colleagues, and resign now"
I know, along with many Singaporeans, that you must be feeling very troubled these two and a half weeks. But we also know that you are a man with a very strong will. As you told Singaporeans at a rally during the 2015 General Election, "Whoever governs Singapore must have that iron in him or give it up."

But giving up does not necessarily mean weakness in a person if it is done for noble reasons that are for the greater good of society. In view of what had happened between you and your siblings in the last few years that exploded in full public view only recently, I would like to make this plea to you,
"Dear Prime Minister, please think of your Country, Family and Colleagues, and resign from the premiership now!"

Here are my 5 reasons :

For Country

1. You have become a liability to the nation. You have mishandled your dispute with your siblings which led them to make serious allegations of your abuse of power and your wife's pervasive influence on government even though she does not hold any elected or official position; these allegations warrant an independent inquiry by a special committee.
They have tarnished the special "Singapore brand" of honest and clean government that is free of abuse of power and conflict of interest. This "branding" has won us tremendous goodwill among investors, buyers of our products and services and friends around the world. It has been carefully built and nurtured around the Lee Kuan Yew legacy which has now sadly been discredited. If this is not put right without delay, the adverse impact on our economy and national well-being will be felt in the years to come.

2. Your priorities are misplaced. You wasted an entire year of the nation's time, brainpower and resources on politicising the elected presidency. As a result, economic challenges have been neglected with slow growth in jobs, wages and productivity.
Your economic targets centred around 2% annual GDP growth are low, uninspiring and lacking in ambition and vision. You have no answers to the challenges of economic disintermediation caused by geopolitical and technology changes. Instead of strengthening alliances with key players to deal with problems together, you have antagonised the biggest economic power in the region. Unless we mend our ways, we will end up with no friends when we need them most.

For Family

3. You had not been in the best of health. Your fainting at last year's National Day Rally was the latest public manifestation; it added to your woes and scared everybody. The dispute with your siblings will add stress to you and likely impede any recovery you hope for.
This can and will detract from your prime ministerial duties. You have given your entire life to public service with the last 13 years as PM, so no Singaporean will begrudge you if you decide to stop and smell the roses. There is a time for everything and now is the time for you to step back and do something different for and with your family.

4. Not being PM can be positive for your children. They will flourish under their own steam and unconstrained by any consideration of impact on official status or obligations. They can even go into politics without inviting any suggestion of nepotism.
For example, Najib Razak went into politics after his prime minister father Abdul Razak had died, likewise for Hishammuddin Hussein, the son of Hussein Onn, the third prime minister of Malaysia. Similarly, Mukhriz Mahathir was elected into the Federal Parliament 5 years after his father Dr Mahathir had stepped down as PM.

For colleagues

5. Several of your ministerial colleagues have been dragged into the dispute. In addition to your good self, DPM Teo Chee Hean and SMS Indranee Rajah have been accused of lying by your siblings, and Minister Shanmugam has been called unethical by Dr Lee Wei Ling.

I believe your code of conduct for ministers, even if informal, requires them to protect and defend their honour and integrity in a court of law by taking out a legal suit against the accusers immediately, but if they do not do so or fail to clear their good name in their legal suit, then they should do the decent thing of resigning from their respective positions in the government without delay.

You can start the process of redeeming your honour by initiating the legal action now and ask your ministers to follow suit to redeem theirs. This would be leadership by example at its best, the same way your late father Mr Lee Kuan Yew demonstrated with his legal suit against Tang Liang Hong that was joined in by his ministers.

This matter of your family feud has consumed and distracted the entire nation. We have to get on with our lives. Please resign now so that the nation can move on to tackle the critical challenges ahead of us. It is the only right thing to do, the only thing you must do without any further delay.

As long as Ling is a living resident of 38 Oxley, the feud will never end and it's difficult to know for certainty which side is right. The easiest move for her is to move out immediately and move into one of her inherited properties or her Nassim Jade apartment. Then we will see the action of the secret ministar committee, either to honour LKY's wish or to honour the political ambitious of their big boss of the day. Vacating immediately, Ling!

The real issue is the need and desire for LHL to make political capital for himself and his heir apparent son by using the brand, and name of LKY to do this. LKY left very little tangible and physical assets for the PAP to use. There is no big statue of him, there are no monuments, no Napoleon's Tomb, no eternal flame ala JFK, etc. There is no Lenin's corpse displayed or Mao's dead body displayed for people to walk by and see. The House is one of the very few tangible connection and that is why Gay Loong has to make use of it for political gain. Displaying his red briefcase, his pajamas, his jogging shoes, golf clubs, etc does not have the same effect as someone as walking thru the hallowed halls and rooms of Oxley would. This is what Ling and Yang are trying to prevent and this is what Whore and Gay are trying to accomplish. Capisce?

Lawyer Lim Tean, the former Secretary-General of the National Solidarity Party (NSP), released a video today castigating Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for selecting the “safe sanctuary” of parliament as his forum of choice to defend himself against the allegations of abuse of power made against him by his siblings in the escalating Oxley Spat.

Citing that Lee Wei Ling and Lee Hsien Yang have sullied the Prime Minister’s standing in the eyes of Singaporeans by challenging his integrity, Lim asserted that “By the PAP’s own self-proclaimed standards, the Prime Minister MUST sue for defamation in order to clear his name.”

By not doing so and by choosing to rebut the allegations in the “safe sanctuary of Parliament,” Lim alleges that the Prime Minister has effectively ensured that his accusers cannot be heard and cannot refute or fight allegations that may be false since Parliamentary Privilege shields allegations made in Parliament from defamation laws.

Declaring that he is adding his voice to the alleged majority of Singaporeans who reject Parliament as an appropriate, impartial venue to settle the matter, Lim opined that lifting the party whip will have no effect since decision makers may be tainted by personal biases and interests. Claiming that parliamentarians are not fit to bring satisfactory closure to the issue, Lim called on the President to restore the integrity of public service by intervening.

All the signs point to a long-drawn titanic struggle between the Lee siblings over 38 Oxley Road. The forthcoming July 3 Parliamentary sitting on the issue will take place without the presence of two of the main combatants – Lee Hsien Yang and Lee Wei Ling – and can only serve to present Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s clarifications about his role and the government’s attempt to explain its position and involvement. Nothing more.

In the leadup to July 3, LHY and LWL are not conceding an inch and I do not see either relenting in their attacks on their brother, sister-in-law Ho Ching and their supporters beyond the date. They have refuted every public statement made by LHL’s or the government’s side.

Examples: LWL alleged that the existence of the committee to look into options for 38, Oxley Road was disclosed only when forced – and this only after one year – despite many requests for the names of the committee from the estate of the late Lee Kuan Yew. Both DPMs Teo Chee Hean and Tharman Shanmugaratnam have said the existence of the committee was no secret.

Next, LHY accused Ho Ching of “theft and intermeddling” when she took away items belonging to LKY. He was pointing out that his sister-in-law had no right to do so. To him, it was irrelevant whatever the purpose of the removal, even though LHL’s spouse had tried to justify the good intentions behind her act. Not accepted by LHY, evidently.

Another example of the younger Lee siblings’ refusal to budge was in LHY’s angry retort – in response to Senior Minister of Law Indranee Rajah’s Facebook postings on the drafting of LKY’s will. He took issue with LHL’s using of ministers repeatedly to insinuate that the late first PM did not understand his own will.

He said PM Lee’s ministers were arguing that Lee Kuan Yew, a Cambridge-educated lawyer and sitting MP, signed his own will without knowing what was in it. LHY took offence that they were claiming that he initialed beneath the demolition clause, without understanding what it meant in plain English.

“This is an insult to a great man,” LHY said.

“Probate has been granted on Lee Kuan Yew’s will, so it is final and legally binding,” he said. The proper place for his brother to challenge his father’s will was in court.

We now have a situation where LHL has to defend himself in Parliament – against attacks on his integrity and allegations of abuse of power and explain his dilemma in dealing with not just his father’s house but also his siblings. He is wearing a number of hats – as PM, as the eldest son of LKY and as an elder brother. As PM, he is obliged and duty-bound to act in the larger interests of the nation and that well be in conflict with his other roles as son and sibling. It is a kind of a Hobson’s choice – the more he stands on the side of government and argues the case against late father’s wishes to preserve the house, the more he will be seen by his siblings to have betrayed LKY and, as collateral damage, the standing of the siblings.

The 38 Oxley Road saga is no longer just about 38 Oxley Road. It is a full-blown Lee saga played out in the openfield Facebook arena, with Singaporeans hooked onto its every twist and turn. Everything every of the siblings says – and that includes the sisters-in-law, Ho Ching and Suet Fern – is part of a closely fought battle for public legitimacy as heirs to the LKY legacy.

LKY was a great admirer of the Japanese system of elite bureaucracy where top political figures and civil servants were all part of a big happy family and where there were usually never any doubt as to their overall orientation and loyalties. The Lee dispute will now test that severely.

We are all growing up – the Lee family, the political system and the people.

The dispute will be with us for a long time. Whatever Parliament and the courts choose to do, Lee Wei Ling is going to stay in 38 Oxley Road and outlive the tenures of government leaders. LHY is unlikely to allow unchallenged any critical remark about his or wife’s conduct.

It is a fact now: Life has changed dramatically in Singapore. However distracting it may be for Lee Hsien Loong in carrying on as PM, he has to deal with that. And Singaporeans have also to deal with this hard truth, as the founding PM might say.

Mr Lee Hsien Yang had earlier today asserted that PM Lee escalated grievances on ‘private family matter’ to committee of subordinates to bypass court system. He said that the “mysterious ministerial committee refused to list the options it was considering for 38 Oxley Road, even after repeated requests from Lee Kuan Yew’s Estate.”

DPM Teo is responding to the accusations by Mr Lee through his press secretary, said that the allegations were a “selective and inaccurate account of his exchanges with the Ministerial Committee on 38 Oxley Road”. DPM Teo said “just because (Mr Lee) found some questions inconvenient to answer, that does not mean that the Committee abused its power or did wrong.”

The following is the response by DPM Teo’s press secretary in full.

Mr Lee Hsien Yang (LHY)’s statement on 2 July 2017 presents a selective and inaccurate account of his exchanges with the Ministerial Committee on 38 Oxley Road (the House).

The Committee sought Mr LHY and Dr Lee Wei Ling (LWL)’s views on the late Mr Lee’s wishes and thinking in July 2016. In its initial letters, the Committee had made clear to Mr LHY and Dr LWL the purpose and scope of the Committee’s work. This includes (1) Why the Committee was formed; (2) Who it reports to (namely Cabinet); (3) What it would look into; and (4) Why Mr LHY’s input would be useful.

(The following are the) letters dated 27 July 2016 and 24 August 2016 to Mr LHY which make these points clear.
The Committee has no power to decide on the validity of the Last Will. It was made clear to Mr LHY that the Committee is not the place where decisions on the legal validity of the Last Will can be made, and this is a matter between him and Mr Lee Hsien Loong (LHL).

The Committee also made clear to Mr LHY from the outset that his provision of any reply was purely voluntary. On this basis, Mr LHY proceeded to make various submissions to the Committee, both last year and into this year.

The circumstances of the Last Will became relevant because Mr LHY’s representations to the Committee placed reliance on one part of the Last Will as the primary evidence of Mr Lee’s intent. He wanted the Committee to focus on one part of the clause relating to Mr Lee’s wishes on the House, and not its other part.

When the circumstances related to the drafting of the Last Will were brought to the Committee’s attention, Mr LHY’s views on this were sought. In the same vein, the Committee had also posed questions to Mr LHL, based on representations made by Mr LHY and Dr LWL.

Just because Mr LHY found some questions inconvenient to answer, that does not mean that the Committee abused its power or did wrong.

Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean will provide a fuller explanation in Parliament on 3 July 2017.
