Man gets $4,000 medical bill after accident with Geylang Serai ice cream vendor, appeals for video evidence
June 9, 2017
He hopes to claim from the vendor's insurance.

A man is appealing for eyewitnesses and visual evidence of an accident that left him with a 4cm gash on his forehead from a vendor at the Geylang Serai Bazaar.

Facebook user Derick Chow says he was swiped in the head by a stick used by a Turkish ice cream vendor, while the latter was performing a prank before serving the ice cream to him.

According to The Straits Times, the incident occurred on the night of Jun. 2, when Chow was visiting the bazaar with his girlfriend.

The couple decided to stop for some Turkish ice cream, and they were presumably watching the vendor perform the ice cream prank at close quarters due to the crowd at the bazaar.

For those who are not familiar with the dessert, Turkish ice-cream (or dondurma) is commonly served with the scoop being first placed at the edge of a metal stick before being twirled around in the air out of the customer’s reach. The ice cream server often plays pranks on his customers as part of the trick, before finally placing the scoop into a cone or cup to hand to them.

In this case, the ice cream chef had pranked Chow’s girlfriend before turning to him. But when Chow reached out for the ice cream, the impact from the metal stick accidentally hitting him resulted in a deep cut.

ST reports that Chow then took a taxi to Raffles Hospital, where he received 20 stitches and a $4,000 bill.

He is reportedly planning to claim the bill from the stall’s insurance, but as part of negotiations, the vendor requested video footage of the incident.

A police report was also reportedly made from the accident, but Chow hopes that some of the people he says were taking videos of the ice cream man’s performance will come forward to share footage with him.

All that said, Chow stated in the comments of his post that the ice-cream vendor is a “nice guy,” and that the ice-cream tasted “really good”.

Probably this Chow guy told RH that he will claim insurance.

Also probably they told him on forehead can have scar and asked if he wanted them to call down the plastic surgeon to do the stitching. He probably chose to have the Plastic Surgeon do it.

Plastic surgeon is told it is an insurance case. He bills to the max what usually insurance companies would pay.

Remember that there is no longer a SMA guideline on fees. Although SMA fought hard to have it saying it helps the public have an idea what normal fees would be and perhaps form a ceiling on fees, Ministry of Trade argued that it is anti-competitive.

Hence doctors can charge pretty much anything they want these days. Of course except for Dr Susan Lim who was told her charged are beyond the "ethical limit" although there is no such thing as any guide to what "ethical charges" are.

Singapore Govt lah. The same ones who say that having less Petrol Station Companies makes petrol cheaper.

Specialist fee probably only part of the $4000 lah not all of it.

I think most private plastic surgeons will charge like $1-2k to come down to the hospital from home to put in some stitches. Not only Raffles. But not everyday will have facial injuries to stitch. And not everyday you on duty (rotate among other plastic surgeons). Got other things to do also as plastic surgeon. Million is too little.

Man suffers deep gash after being accidentally hit by
Turkish ice cream seller's stick at Geylang bazaar

We have all probably seen or even been a victim of the Turkish ice cream prank, which involves the seller using a long-handled metal stick to repeatedly wave the dessert before us and then snatch it out of our reach.

What seems like amusing and harmless fun can lead to dire consequences, however, as Facebook user Derick Chow proved.

In a post dated June 6, the 26-year-old shared how he had visited the Geylang Serai Bazaar on June 2 and suffered a 4cm-long gash on his forehead.

He said he was "hit in action" at the Turkish ice cream stall and appealed for witnesses who had photos or video footage of the incident to come forward.

The stall vendor had been waving the stick in front of Chow, who was about to collect his ice cream cone, when he was hit and injured by the stick.

According to The Straits Times, Chow, a business development manager, said he received 20 stitches on his forehead at Raffles Hospital and that his medical bills amounted to over $4,000.

He hopes to get the money back from the ice cream stall's insurance and is still in talks with the stall owner.
