Pictured on a beach with friends: Manchester suicide bomber Salman Abedi

The Manchester suicide bomber was today described as an “ordinary” and “quiet” schoolboy who smoked drugs, before turning into a militant jihadist.

New pictures emerged today of Salman Abedi, with friends on a beach, believed to be in Libya, and outside his Manchester home aged about 14 or 15.

Friends said he smoked cannabis and showed little interest in religion until about a year ago when he started spending time with different friends.

One said: “It was like a turning point. He suddenly started hanging out with people I’d never seen before and not his old friends.”

Another said: “He was just a normal kid — not one of those who ever particularly stood out.”

Salman Abedi has been identified as the man behind the suicide bombing in Manchester

Abedi went to Burnage Academy and was said to be a keen footballer, often playing at the ground at Whalley Range High School where the Manchester United Foundation held soccer sessions, they said.

It emerged he had only just returned from war-torn Libya before launching his horrific attack. He is understood to have made regular journeys to the North African country in recent years.

It has been claimed he may have also spent time in Syria.

A huge security clampdown was launched today as three men were arrested in south Manchester in connection with the concert bomb attack.

A massive counter terror operation was also under way to trace accomplices of Abedi.

Reports said that 22-year-old Abedi may have travelled to Manchester by train from London raising the possibility the device was assembled in the capital.

Armed counterterrorism force detain Manchester bomber's dad

The father of the bomber who killed 22 concert-goers in an attack in Manchester told Reuters in the Libyan capital on Wednesday that he had last spoken to his son some five days ago, by phone, and "everything was normal."

Ramadan Abedi, who was detained by a Tripoli counterterrorism force during the interview, said his son Salman had told his family that he was heading on pilgrimage to Mecca.

"I spoke to him about five days ago ... there was nothing wrong, everything was normal," Abedi said. He did not say where his son was at the time.

Another of Abedi's sons, Hashem, was detained on Tuesday evening in Tripoli on suspicion of links to Islamic State, said Ahmed Bin Salem, a spokesman for the Special Deterrence Force, also known as Rada.

"We have evidence that he is involved in Daesh (Islamic State) with his brother. We have been following him for more than one month and a half," Bin Salem said. "He was in contact with his brother and he knew about the attack."

Rada said Hashem, 20, had travelled from London to Tripoli on April 16.

British interior minister Amber Rudd said earlier that the bomber had recently returned from Libya. Her French counterpart Gerard Collomb said the man had links with Islamic State and had probably visited Syria as well.

But Ramadan Abedi said he was sure Salman had not been a member of the jihadist group.

"Salman doesn't belong to any organisation," he said. "The family is a bit confused because Salman doesn't have this ideology, he doesn't hold these beliefs."

"I didn't expect that to happen, never," Abedi said, adding that he thought there were "hidden hands" behind the attack.

"We condemn these terrorist acts on civilians, innocent people," he said.
Abedi also said he was certain Salman had not been in Syria. "I checked his two passports and there wasn't anything in them, he didn't travel to Syria," he said.

While Reuters was interviewing Abedi, several unmarked vehicles carrying heavily armed Rada forces drove up to the family home in the Tripoli suburb of Ayn Zara and detained him.

Forklift truck driver cradled dying bomb victim Saffie, 8, and told her, ‘You’ll be OK’

From Yahoo news

A forklift truck driver has told of the moment he held dying Saffie Rose Roussos, 8, in his arms as she cried out for her mother.

Paul Reid, 42, ran back into the venue when he heard the blast at Manchester arena – and wrapped Saffie in his coat.

She later died in hospital from her injuries – the youngest of the 22 victims of the attack.

Reid said, ‘She was a dying little girl and she just wanted her mum. It was devastating.

‘I just tried to reassure her, then one of the paramedics came.

‘I was stroking her face and saying, ‘Come on stay awake. You’re going to be all right. They are coming to take you away in a minute.’

Reid said that he was among the first to dial 999 after the attack.

He told The Sun, ‘People were shouting, running and screaming. I will never forget the sounds. Inside the hall was absolute chaos. There were people lying all over the place.

‘I looked at my phone, it was 10.32. I dialed 999 and was telling the woman, ‘Just send everything and anybody to the Manchester Arena, a big thing has happened’. I must have been one of the first callers because it was seconds after the bomb went off.

‘There were people dead everywhere and people running in a panic towards the train station.’
