SINGAPORE — President Donald Trump has formally nominated one of his top security aides, Ms Kathleen Troia McFarland, to be the next United States ambassador to Singapore.
“I am pleased to nominate KT McFarland to be Ambassador to Singapore, one of America’s great allies,” Mr Trump was quoted saying in a White House statement on Saturday (May20).
He added: "While I am sorry to lose her, KT’s work in developing policies that put American interests first will have a lasting impact. She will remain an essential team member as she fulfills this new and important role.”
Ms McFarland, whose nomination has been rumoured since April, currently serves as Mr Trump's deputy national security adviser. A former national security analyst for the Fox News channel, the 65-year-old was one of Mr Trump's original hires after he was elected president on Nov 8.
She had previously served in the national security councils of the Nixon, Ford, and Reagan administrations, and worked at the Department of Defence.
"I am honored by President Trump’s trust in me,” Ms McFarland said in the White House statement. "It’s been an incredible experience to serve here in the White House during his early months in office, and now I’m looking forward to implementing his policy with one of our key allies in Asia."
Added Mr HR McMaster, Mr Trump's national security adviser: "KT is leaving a great team in place to support the President, and our friends in Singapore know they are getting one of his top aides as their American ambassador.”
The White House announced Dr Rick Waddell, a major general in the US Army Reserve, as Ms McFarland's replacement.
If confirmed by the US Senate, Ms McFarland will replace the most recent US ambassador to Singapore Kirk Wagar, who left the Republic in January upon Mr Trump’s inauguration.
