Saudi Arabia on Tuesday said that 34 nations have agreed to form an “Islamic military alliance” to fight terrorism with a joint operations centre based in the kingdom’s capital, Riyadh.

The announcement published by the state-run Saudi Press Agency said the alliance will be Saudi-led and is being established because terrorism “should be fought by all means and collaboration should be made to eliminate it.”

The statement said Islam forbids “corruption and destruction in the world” and that terrorism constitutes “a serious violation of human dignity and rights, especially the right to life and the right to security.”

The coalition includes nations with large and established armies such as Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt as well as war-torn countries with embattled militaries such as Libya and Yemen.

African nations that have suffered terrorist attacks such as Mali, Chad, Somalia and Nigeria are also members.

Saudi Arabia’s regional rival, Shiite Iran, is not part of the coalition. Saudi Arabia is currently leading a military intervention in Yemen against Shiite Houthi rebels and is part of the U.S.-led coalition bombing the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

At a rare news conference, Saudi Deputy Crown Prince and Defense Minister Mohammed bin Salman said the new Islamic military coalition will work to counter the Sunni extremist Islamic State group and develop mechanisms for working with other countries and international bodies to support international counterterrorism efforts.

“Currently, every Muslim country is fighting terrorism individually ... so coordinating efforts is very important,” he said.

Smaller member-states included in the coalition are the archipelago of the Maldives and the island-nation of Bahrain. Other Gulf Arab countries such as Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates are also in the coalition, though notably absent from the list is Saudi Arabia’s neighbour, Oman.

But Iraq and Syria whose forces are battling to regain territory taken by the Islamic State group and whose governments are allied with Iran are not in the coalition.

Organized by the King Faisal Center for Islamic Research and Studies, the forum will be held on May 21 under the theme “The Nature of Extremism and the Future of Terrorism.”

Secretary General of the Center Dr. Saud al-Sarhan revealed that the forum will bring together international experts to discuss pressing issues on the global agenda, such as the nature of fundamentalism, its forms and influence.

They will also discuss predictions of the future of terror and the role of social media in affecting it, he added.

Saudi Arabia has taken the initiative and played a leading role in the war on terrorism, he continued.

The forum will serve to bolster the kingdom’s pioneering role on the regional and international levels, he stressed.

Saud remarked that terrorism has had destructive effects on several Islamic countries, such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Syria and Yemen over the past decade and several Islamic nations have found themselves fighting terrorism alone.

The Riyadh forum seeks to overcome the state of fragmentation and launch open, constructive and honest dialogue on the causes and roots of the current situation, he revealed.

The forum’s agenda includes four discussion sessions that will debate ways countries can work together to find solutions to dealing with terrorism, which poses one of the greatest pressing challenges not just to the Islamic countries, but the whole world.

The topics cover the future vision of terrorism, extremism on the internet and social media, terrorism’s ties to crimes and corruption and mechanisms to combat fundamentalism and terrorism in the Middle East.

Established in 1983, the King Faisal Center for Islamic Research and Studies is considered a platform that brings together researchers and institutions to preserve scientific work and enrich cultural and intellectual life in Saudi Arabia. During her time at the DOJ Keneally carried out a four-year-long review of the Clinton Foundation's tax returns between 2010 and 2013.

Trump visits Saudi's counter-terrorism complex

President Trump on Sunday took a guided tour of Saudi Arabia's headquarters for countering extremist ideologies in the Middle East.

Trump was taken through the Global Center for Combating Extremist Ideology after delivering a major speech to a number of Arab leaders about collaboration in the fight against terrorism.

The center is primarily focused on combating militant ideology and messaging. Saudi officials said the center will be used to counter the messaging used by groups like the Islamic State.

Military force alone is not the answer because "we know these groups can only be defeated if we defeat their ideology," said Mohammed al-Issa, secretary-general of the Saudi-based Muslim World League.

The U.S. and Saudi Arabia signed a joint declaration on Saturday that called for the creation of a special commission to coordinate both country's efforts on combating extremism by cutting off groups' financing, countering their messaging and applying military force.

The commission will meet both in Saudi Arabia and the U.S. at least once annually to analyze the counter-terror strategy's success and better coordinate both countries' efforts.
