Sean Spicer hid behind bushes near the White House as reporters clamoured to question him over James Comey's sacking, it has been reported.

The White House press secretary was much in demand on Tuesday night and, after giving a TV interview on an outside set, retreated to the safety of a nearby hedge, according to the Washington Post.

After several minutes conferring with aides Mr Spicer emerged ready to provide answers, as long as they were not filmed, the Post said.

Trump's first official meeting after sacking Comey is with Russian FM

Donald Trump's sacking of Mr Comey, the now ex-FBI director, on the advice of his Justice Department had Washington in uproar.

Mr Comey was leading the investigation of alleged Russian hacking of the US election, and of claimed ties between Trump associates and the Kremlin.

But Mr Trump, who has denied any such links, said it was Mr Comey's handling of the probe into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server — which the Democrat blamed for helping her lose the election — that meant a new face was needed to restore public trust.

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee that is carrying out its own investigation, said he believed the action amount to a "looming constitutional crisis".

"The president of the United States has just fired the Director of the FBI who was carrying out an investigation into him," he said.

Senior Republican senator John McCain said he was "disappointed in the president's decision". Mr McCain said the firing strengthened the case "for a special congressional committee to investigate Russia’s interference in the 2016 election," the New York Times reported.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer refused to be filmed, asked for the lights to be turned off and "stood in darkness" as he answered questions from reporters about the sacking of FBI director James Comey.

The Washington Post reports that after news of Comey's firing broke, Sean Spicer huddled with his staff "near a clump of bushes" on White House grounds as he didn't want to pass reporters to get back to his office.

Spicer had apparently wanted to break the news in an emailed statement instead.

He initially refused to do a briefing, returning to his office and locking the door - before later resurfacing as Democrats and Republicans began to criticise and question the firing.

"After Spicer spent several minutes hidden in the darkness and among the bushes near these sets, Janet Montesi, an executive assistant in the press office, emerged and told reporters that Spicer would answer some questions, as long as he was not filmed doing so," the article said.

He then ordered for the lights to be turned off and stood in darkness between two tall hedges as he answered questions from reporters.

James Comey was fired by US President Donald Trump on Tuesday.

Explaining his decision, Trump said: "James Comey will be replaced by someone who will do a far better job, bringing back the spirit and prestige of the FBI."

In a letter to Comey, Trump said the firing was necessary to restore "public trust and confidence" in the FBI.

Comey has come under intense scrutiny in recent months for his role in an investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton’s email practices, including a pair of letters he sent to Congress on the matter in the closing days of last year’s election - a move which was initially praised by Donald Trump.

Avoiding the press took a strange turn after White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer reportedly hid behind a tall hedge on Tuesday night.

After President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey, Spicer briefly spoke with Fox Business, but then disappeared into the shadows along with his staff to avoid further questioning, the Washington Post reports.

“After Spicer spent several minutes hidden in the bushes behind these sets, Janet Montesi, an executive assistant in the press office, emerged and told reporters that Spicer would answer some questions, as long as he was not filmed doing so,” the Washington Post wrote. “Spicer then emerged.”

Predictably, Twitter has had a field day trolling Spicer with memes, mostly comparing the ordeal to Homer Simpson’s famed disappearing act.
