Chitchat Trying to renew passport online is so stupid

I made the same complaint about online banking system & got criticised for this observation. Many in this forum are from the younger generation & are still working. When you are actively working you are still tied into the system. On a daily basis you still have to interact with all the new changes, so it is not very difficult to adjust because they are exposed to these changes on a daily basis.

Once you get older, you seldom interact with the new systems. The PAP has forgotten that there are older Sporeans in Spore that are not aware of theses changes until they have to do something requiring the new system. You will of course have problems.

Think about driving into a part of Spore where you are not familiar with. You would of course be confused & get lost. That is what is happening with many older Sporeans & actually the PAP is responsible for much of this confusion because they have implemented many changes for the sake of change without properly preparing the people for these changes.

In the old days the PAP would 1st have a campaign e.g. against littering, then they would introduce the laws to enforce the anti-littering behaviour. Nowadays they would just go & implement the law & if you were unaware of the law, that is your problem.

There is a thing called "curiosity".. I am not expert or should I say, qualified computer specialist, the curiosity got me learning about computer hardware & software & OS's... it started off, when the office system started migrating from ledgers to mini computer systems like IBM, NCR with in turn was connected to bigger ones at the Data Centre....(like "HAL").

When IBM jr...desktop computers was introduced in the work environment, my colleague & me, started, "secretly" learn about the PC plus the software that came with it...LOTUS 123 version 1.0, DOS 1.0, Display Write..forgot, what version...it got us curious on how to install the 'copied SW" we took home & try to load that into our own PC...in which we built ... so we learnt to be a "hacker"..learning some programming tricks to reset the "install" index in the OS etc...

That started a life long process of learning...by being curious...which led to DAC system, UNIX, SCO UNIX....etc...then late LINUX etc. even IBM system...

To cut a long story short...curiosity is the key...we are never too old to learn anything..unless we have some brain issues..then we can't help it....

Do not be overwhelm by technology....face one...ask yourself " how can I get round it"...instead of moaning & say..." I AM TOO OLD"...

Decided to retrieve my Singpass so went down to one of the Singpass offices. Anyone who is unwilling to wait 10 days for a Singpass account better go to their Tanjong Pagar office because if you go to one of their satellite offices you'll have to wait 10 days before you can access your Singpass account.

I'm really impressed a 10 day wait :biggrin:

So if I renew my passport through the online system it is going to take 10 + 5= 15 days.
If I just go directly to the ICA it would only take about 5 days.

What a waste of money on technology:rolleyes:

Don't get me wrong. I fully support technology because it has made me a millionaire :smile: I've been trading online in the US market since the 1990's & would recommend others to do the same. Forget about investing only in Spore & take a look elsewhere.

I think you know by heart the so-called "standards" we have right?...anything on-line here, are designed to befuddle you...SINGPASS recent years was a mess, before they got it right. It is best taken with a pinch of salt...

Yes the online system is way superior to queuing at ICA and should be embraced. However, older folks having difficulty with electronic transactions are not stupid. They have limitations.

1. Lack of exposure
2. Slow in action due to poor eye sight and dexterity.

Aging is a scary process. I used to be able to type very fast. However, unknowingly, I lose that ability as I aged. So it is more frustrating for me to key in the details of 6 persons only to have the system hanging on me when making payment. My kids will simply key the details all over again, which is a breeze to them.

Sorry to go off tangent. It is harsh to label old folks stupid simply because they cannot keep up with the change. I used to think the same way too when I was young. Now that I get to face old age, we do know that the system is not stupid and neither are we.


One thing I really dislike is when the system sends out an SMS of a number & require that you type in this number online within a very short time limit. My nokia phone has a small screen & it's difficult to see all those tiny digits.

Crimsonlogic is the vendor for Singpass & CDP....they are at Science Park.

I'm providing the address end users should go to if they want to retrieve their account on the same day. This address is also found on the Singpass website. One can also go to 2 other offices at PSA Building(460 Alexander Road, #28-04) & Tampines but the Tampines office is I think temporary?

I couldn't find the PSA on the website so I originally left it out.
