So far USA is UNSUCCESSFUL in this technology. They have to work on STEALING and COPYCAT against Chinese & Russians. The speed of this is 2.5X the initial barrel speed of machine guns. So no gun can hope to shoot it down.

Russia’s new hypersonic anti-ship Zircon missile has reached eight times the speed of sound (about 6100 mph) during the test, a source with Russia’s defense sector told TASS.

The source noted that Zircon missiles can be launched from universal launching platforms 3C14 which are also used for the Onyx and Caliber missiles.

It is expected that the new missiles will be installed at the heave nuclear-powered cruisers Peter the Great and Admiral Nakhimov.

The expected range with a new type of fuel is about 1000 km (600 miles) at Mach 5-6. The export version will be limited to 400 kilometers range. Launching platform is the 3S14 Agat, also used to launch the SS-N-26 Strobile and SS-N-27 «Sizzler» missiles.

The WU-14 was the Pentagon’s code name for a Chinese experimental hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV), which is now called the DF-ZF.

The DF-ZF is a hypersonic missile delivery vehicle that has been flight-tested by the Chinese seven times, on 9 January, 7 August and 2 December 2014; 7 June and 27 November 2015; and again in April 2016.

The DF-ZF HGV can reach speeds between Mach 5 and Mach 10 (i.e., between 6,173 km/hour (3,836 mph) and 12,359 km/hour (7,680 mph).

The USA has had several hypersonic missile and vehicle tests. The main US systems were the X-51 and the HTV-2.

In this world only USA Russia & China are high enough technological level to try Hypersonic Vehicles, USA was the 1st to start, but until now no success, Chinese was the 1st successful, and succeeded during 1st test. Russian in second place after this week's test. Chinese will share secrets with Russians but not USA.

According to my info, Chinese launching uses VERTICAL TEL, and this Russian TEL is INCLINED TEL, which are usually only for shorter range missiles. Heavy and longer ranged launching must be vertical.

Chinese had 7 tests 100% success. Russian have a success this week. WHERE IS result of USA?

Strategically speaking, USA is a loser regardless even if their hypersonic vehicle can fly or not. Because USA have about 10 carriers, all nuclear, all extremely expensive. Gerald Ford Pro gramme cost US$36B excluding planes, ammos, equipments and men on board. The 10 carriers of US Navy should be in $Trillion Level. ALL can be wiped out by hypersonic missiles, < @$10M. Russia & China now only each have 1 carrier in operation (Chinese new carrier launching within next few days). That means even if US hypersonic missiles begin to work it can find at most 3 targets to sink. While USA stand to get about 10 carriers all sunken, the total losses are totally non-proportional.

Upon the success this week for Hypersonic HGV, Putin now puts 3 HGV nukes warheads in his world #1 SARMAT ICBM! By using previous MIRV nukes, one single SARMAT ICBM can wipe out entire France or Texas or 650,00 sq km area. It's SPEED + RANGE + PAYLOAD + SELF WEIGHT make it the world #1 ICBM. Matchless.

Russian strategic missile troops reportedly launched an RS-18 ballistic missile on Tuesday. The launch may have been a test of the advanced hypersonic glider warhead, which would be able to defeat US anti-missile systems.

The test was conducted at midday from a site near the town of Yasny, Orenburg region, in the southern Urals, and the warhead reached the Kura test range in Kamchatka in Russia’s Far East.

“The test was a success. The warhead was delivered to Kura field,” the Defense Ministry reported.

Popular defense blog MilitaryRussia.ru says the launch was meant to test Russia’s hypersonic glider warhead, currently known by its developer designation, ‘object 4202’, or Aeroballistic Hypersonic Warhead.

A select few countries are currently developing the technology. The US has the HTV-2, a device developed by DARPA that has two partially successful tests under its belt. The Chinese warhead using the same technology is called DF-ZF, with Beijing first confirming a test in 2014. India is also studying hypersonic flight technology, but unlike Russia, the US and China, it is reportedly not developing a strategic missile warhead.

A hypersonic glider vehicle (HGV) is different from a conventional ballistic missile warhead in that it travels most of the time in the stratosphere rather than in space. It gives an HGV-tipped missile greater range and may give anti-missile systems a shorter window to respond to an attack.

More importantly, an HGV can maneuver during the approach to a target at high speed, making interception significantly harder, because it makes guiding an interceptor missile towards the attacking vehicle challenging and potentially impossible with current rocket technology.

Object 4202 is reportedly meant to be used with Russia’s next-gen heavy strategic missile the RS-28 Sarmat. Military experts estimate that the new ICBM, an image of which was first made public this week, may carry up to three HGVs as payload.

A previous possible test of object 4202 was reported in April.

Russian Strategic Missile Forces have conducted a successful intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch, testing a hypersonic cruise vehicle, Interfax reported, citing a source familiar with the issue.

The test launch was performed Tuesday using an RS-18A strategic ballistic missile (UR-100N, NATO designation SS-19 Stiletto) from a missile deployment area in the Orenburg Region, the source said, adding that the test was a success.

Russia’s Defense Ministry has neither denied nor confirmed the report.

All modern nuclear warheads are delivered on targets using ballistic trajectory that can be calculated, therefore such warheads could be intercepted. Hypersonic warheads currently in design would be capable of maneuvering by yaw and pitch, eventually becoming impossible to intercept, thus making any existing and upcoming missile defense system impotent.

The new warhead is likely to be readied for the upcoming RS-28 Sarmat heavy liquid-propelled ICBM, which is expected to enter testing later this year.

Tests of the new Russian ICBM RS-28 Sarmat, which is meant to replace the outgoing heavy silo-based Soviet R-36M missiles, dubbed “Satan” by NATO, are likely to begin in summer this year.

The RS-28 has been in development since 2009 and is scheduled to start replacing the old ICBMs in 2018.

The new missile, weighing at least 100 tons, will reportedly be capable of carrying a payload of up to 10 tons on any trajectory. This means an attack on a target could be made from any direction, i.e. RS-28 could start from Russia and fly in the direction of Antarctica, make a circumterrestrial flight and hit targets on the other side of the planet from an unexpected direction.

Russia has unveiled the very first image of a new super-heavy thermonuclear-armed intercontinental ballistic missile, the RS-28 Sarmat. The Sarmat, designed to be fitted with a hypersonic glider warhead, is expected to go into production as early as 2018.

The Sarmat is undergoing development at the Makeyev Rocket Design Bureau in the city of Miass. The first image of the new prospective missile was declassified by the bureau on Sunday.

A short statement signed by chief designer V. Degtar and leading designer Y. Kaverin accompanies the illustration.

“In accordance with the Decree of the Russian Government 'On the State Defense Order for 2010 and the planning period 2012-2013,' the Makeyev Rocket Design Bureau was instructed to start design and development work on the Sarmat. In June 2011, the Bureau and the Russian Ministry of Defense signed a state contract for the Sarmat's development,” reads the note on the bureau's website.

The missile’s first stage engine PDU-99 was tested in August, while a hypersonic warhead for the upcoming ICBM was reportedly tested back in April.

The Sarmat is being developed to replace the RS-36M ICBM family – dubbed 'Satan' by NATO – which entered service in the 1970s and 1980s. The prospective missile, weighing at least 100 tons, features a large payload capacity – reportedly up to 10 tons – and is expected to have up to 10 heavy or 16 lighter warheads, or a combination of a number of warheads with decoys and other counter-measures to suppress enemy missile defenses. The Sarmat is expected to enter service in late 2018 and completely replace the RS-36M family by 2020.
