UPDATE

The Fulton County Medical Examiner identified the 5-year-old boy as Charles Holt Saturday. He and his parents were sitting at a window table when he wandered away. Hotel security staff was able to dislodge the boy, but he died around an hour later at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Original Story

The Sun Dial restaurant in Atlanta, which sits on top of the Westin Peachtree Plaza, is closed until further notice after a 5-year-old boy was killed Friday by getting caught in the restaurant’s rotating wall, as reported by the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The small boy was visiting from Charlotte, North Carolina with his parents. He had walked away from the table where he was sitting, and somehow got caught between a wall and table, says Atlanta police spokeswoman Officer Stephanie Brown.

The automatic shut off function reportedly stopped the restaurant from rotating as staff tried to help the boy. It was too late, however, and the boy died from severe injuries at Grady Memorial Hospital.

The reported read that the boy was pronounced dead around 4:20 p.m., about an hour after he became caught in the wall.

Plaza Manager George Reed reportedly made a statement regarding the incident, saying that the hotel was deeply saddened by the events that took place in the restaurant.

"“There was a tragic accident at the hotel involving a young boy. Words cannot express the depths of our sorrow. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”"

Spokeswoman Peyton Smith reportedly said that the restaurant will be closed until further notice.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, another tragedy took place at the hotel just last year. Carolyn Robinson, 61, who worked for the Westin company for over 35 years, died after she became locked in a walk-in freezer around 8 p.m.

Her family notified the restaurant when she did not return home after her shift, and when hotel staff looked for her, they found her body in the freezer.

Authorities at the time reportedly said that foul play was not suspected as the woman worked in the culinary department.

Evidence showed that Robinson attempted to utilize the exit mechanism that is meant to prevent this kind of incident from happening.

Coworkers described Robinson as someone that “everybody loves.”

ATLANTA, Ga -- The five-year old boy who died after getting trapped at the top of downtown's Sun Dial restaurant has been identified.

The exact cause of death for Charles Holt is still pending, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner.

Charles died after he sustained head injuries at the popular Atlanta tourist location Friday afternoon.

A spokesperson for Atlanta Police confirmed the boy was injured at the rotating restaurant at the top of the Westin hotel Peachtree Plaza around 3:20 p.m. in downtown Atlanta.

According to Atlanta Police Department spokesperson Warren Pickard, Charles and his family were visiting from Charlotte, N.C. and were at the restaurant for lunch.

The boy's parents were sitting at the table and the child apparently wandered 4 to 5 feet away, when he got caught between the rotating portion of the floor and a wall, a space of only about 4 to 5 inches.

"We simply think he lost sight of his parents and panicked and found himself in that situation," Pickard said. "A small child don't know what to do in those moments, and it crushed his little small body."

Pickard said the staff and patrons at the restaurant immediately jumped into action to try to render first aid to the child.

"The amount of people who were helping was amazing," Pickard said. "They were moving furniture, they were pulling chairs -- chairs that were bolted to the floor -- they were pulling them up to try to get the child out."

First responders were at the restaurant in a matter of minutes. However, Charles unconscious when he was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, and later died.

The restaurant at the top of the Westin Hotel, popularly known as the Sun Dial, is an Atlanta attraction because of its clockwise rotating floor, 70 stories up, that offers a 360-degree view of the city.

The restaurant will remain closed for the remainder of the weekend.

In a statement, Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel Manager George Reed said the hotel is working with authorities and will assist them in the investigation. "Words cannot express the depths of our sorrow. Our thoughts remain with the family," he said.
