And so it begins.

Syria war: US launches missile strikes following chemical 'attack'

The US has carried out a missile attack against targets in Syria in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack on a rebel-held town.
A Pentagon official said about 50 Tomahawk cruise missiles were fired at a Syrian air base.
Earlier, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad should have no role in a future Syria.
His comments signalled a sudden shift in policy by the new US administration.

Wrong!

It is not STRONG vs WEAK at all.

It is BRUTAL BARBARIC vs KIND!

Why?

Somalian militants are so weak, poorly armed poorly trained poorly organized. Got AK-47 and RPGs only, not even using much Pickup Trucks like ISIS. Somalian pirates got poor speed boats and fishing boats only.

USA dare NOT fuck around with Somalians after just only 2 Black Hawks downed and just only 18 US rangers killed.

Why?

USSR Russia & PRC got Nukes and superpower arms, but USA fuck around with Russians and China all the time.

Why?

It is not so much of STRONG vs WEAK.

The United States military has launched over 50 Tomahawk cruise missiles into Syria, according to multiple reports. The attack is a direct response to a Syrian sarin gas attack on its own civilian population.

Turkish officials said that a fixed-wing aircraft dropped munitions carrying sarin onto an underground hospital, killing at least 86, according to ABC News. Sarin, a nerve agent, is known to be extremely deadly, causing a breakdown of a person’s entire nervous system in as little as a minute. Exposure to high doses of sarin eventually result in loss of consciousness, convulsions, paralysis, and finally respiratory failure, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Footage (warning: graphic) claimed to be from the aftermath of the attack showed men, women, and children slain in place. Survivors were gasping for breath:

Why the Navy’s Tomahawk missiles were the weapon of choice in strikes in Syria
By Dan Lamothe

Why the U.S. launched missile strikes at Syria Play Video2:15

The U.S. Navy launched 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles early Friday in Syria at a military airfield in response to a chemical-weapons attack this week on civilians, U.S. military officials said, relying on a mainstay weapon when the Pentagon wants to attack from a safe distance.

The missiles were launched about 4:40 a.m. local time from the USS Ross and USS Porter, Navy destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, defense officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the operation. The strikes targeted al-Shayrat air base in Homs province, from which the Syrian military allegedly launched chemical weapons attacks against civilians Tuesday.

[U.S. strikes Syrian military airfield in first direct assault on Bashar al-Assad’s government]

The Tomahawk has been a critical part of U.S. warfare since the Persian Gulf War in 1991 and commonly carries a 1,000-pound warhead. It was last used by the Pentagon in October, when the military launched Tomahawks from the Red Sea at three coastal radar sites in Yemen after Houthi rebels there fired missiles at several U.S. ships over several days.

Before that, the United States used them in September 2014 as the country expanded its air war against militants from Iraq into Syria. The Pentagon said at the time that it launched 47 Tomahawks from two ships — the USS Philippine Sea in the Persian Gulf and the USS Arleigh Burke in the Red Sea — and hit sites used by what it called the Khorasan Group, an Islamist cell said to be linked to al-Qaeda.

The strikes, announced Thursday night in Washington, were launched from the USS Ross and the USS Port, two destroyers in the Mediterranean Sea, a defense official said on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the operation. Russian forces also use the base, but U.S. military officials said they “deconflicted” with them ahead of time to minimize the possibility of them being caught in the strikes.

Trump: U.S. military has struck Syria in retaliation for chemical attack Play Video1:33
President Trump on April 6 said the U.S. military struck a Syrian military airfield in retaliation for a chemical attack on Syrian civilians that occurred April (The Washington Post)
One of the largest advantages to using the Tomahawk is that it does not require a pilot to be anywhere near a potential target. They can be launched from Navy destroyers up to 1,000 miles away, a tactical consideration when facing enemy air defenses. Assad’s military operates modest S-200 surface-to-air missile systems but is backed by Russian forces, which have more advanced S-300 and S-400 missiles. Those systems have better radar and fly faster than older surface-to-air missiles.

Chris Harmer, a defense analyst and former naval officer now with the Institute for the Study of War, said that the U.S. military can jam some of the Russian radar through the use of the EA-18G Growler jet and other means. But the Russians likely can withstand some of that jamming, especially the most advanced S-400 systems.

“We have the advantage, but it doesn’t mean it renders the Russian air defense irrelevant,” Harmer said.

Tomahawks have less explosive yield than larger bombs carried by manned U.S. aircraft, but to bomb Syrian planes on the ground, that does not matter, Harmer said. Planes, he said, are the “softest of soft targets” and do not require the largest U.S. munitions to destroy or incapacitate them.

There also is a specific variant of the Tomahawk that can carry cluster munitions that separate over a target, causing fragmentation and incendiary damage that could destroy vehicles, supply depots and aircraft on a flight line. The missiles would not cause as much damage to a runway as a larger Air Force bomb launched from a bomber or fighter.

The decision may have been driven in part by political concerns. The closest airfield the United States uses in the region is Incirlik Air Base in Turkey, but an operation against the Syrian government would likely require Turkish consent. The United States also has strike aircraft in other countries in the Middle East, but their use also could raise diplomatic issues.

If the Trump administration decided to use manned aircraft, the most likely option was naval aircraft. That could have included Harrier jets deployed with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which were on Navy ships in the Mediterranean Sea as of Wednesday, according to photos released by the military.

The aircraft carrier USS George H.W. Bush also is in the Middle East but farther away in the Persian Gulf. Part of the fleet of ships accompanying the carrier are closer by, in the Mediterranean, and can carry Tomahawks.

Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage has criticized his ally US President Donald Trump for ordering a missile strike against an airbase in Syria in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack.

The MEP warned that many Trump voters will be confused by his retaliation.

“I am very surprised by this. I think a lot of Trump voters will be waking up this morning and scratching their heads and saying, ‘where will it all end?’” he said.

“As a firm Trump supporter, I say, yes, the pictures were horrible, but I’m surprised. Whatever Assad’s sins, he is secular.”

Farage also urged Britain not to get involved in any further airstrikes.

“Previous interventions in the Middle East have made things worse rather than better,” he said.

Farage’s comments mark a dramatic turnaround in a relationship that last year saw him dine with Trump and the president publicly urge Prime Minister Theresa May to make Farage the UK ambassador to Washington.

UKIP leader Paul Nuttall has also condemned the Syria attack, saying it was “rash, trigger happy, nonsensical and will achieve nothing.”

“The whole world rightly condemns the use of chemical weapons in Syria, but the US attack on the Assad regime does nothing to lower tensions, nor will it hasten peace in that country.

“Too often rash responses to horrific situations are about the conscience of the attacker, rather than a clear-headed response to an awful situation.

“There are currently no good options in Syria. Assad or ISIS [Islamic State/IS] is not a choice anyone would wish to make. But firing off missiles in an enraged response shows weakness not strength in the face of horror.

“I hoped for better from this administration.”

Trump ordered the US military to fire a barrage of Tomahawk missiles from two US Navy vessels in the Mediterranean Sea, which hit the Shayrat base near Homs in the early hours of Friday. It is claimed the base was responsible for launching a chemical attack on Tuesday, which reportedly killed up to 100 civilians in Idlib province.

The British government says the US missile attack, which killed at least five people, was an “appropriate response” to the alleged chemical attack. It was in “close contact on all levels” with the US, and May was told in advance the strikes were going to take place. Britain was not asked to join in.

Damascus has denied responsibility for the chemical attack. Russian officials say the gas contamination was the result of a leak from a rebel chemical weapons depot hit by Syrian government airstrikes.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has released drone footage of Shayrat Airbase in Syria, showing the aftermath of a US missile strike which killed at least six people.

At 4:40am local time (00:40 GMT) on Friday, 59 tomahawk missiles were fired at the base from US warships based in the Eastern Mediterranean. The missile strike was ordered by US President Donald Trump.

There have been conflicting reports about the number of casualties. Syrian officials have so far confirmed that six people were killed and several others wounded in the operation.

However, the governor of Homs told RT that at least five people had been killed, three of whom were Syrian soldiers. He also stated that at least seven people had been wounded.

Meanwhile, Syria's SANA news agency has reported nine civilian deaths, including four children.

The Russian Ministry of Defense also said that six MiG-23 fighter jets had been destroyed, but added that much of the runway remained intact, describing the operation's efficiency as “quite poor.”

Speaking from his Mar-a-Lago resort, Trump claimed that the airbase, located in Homs governorate, was from where a chemical attack in Idlib earlier this week originated. He confirmed that the “targeted military strike” was launched in retaliation for the chemical attack.

The “retaliation” came before the UN or the OPCW, the chemical weapons watchdog, could investigate the incident. Washington sided with rebel-linked activists, who accused Damascus of killing civilians with toxic gas.
