Deep sleep may act as fountain of youth in old age

Our nights are frequently plagued by bouts of wakefulness, bathroom trips and other nuisances as we lose our ability to generate the deep, restorative slumber we enjoy.

According to the journal neuron, unmet sleep needs elevate risk of memory loss and a wide range of mental and physical disorders.

"Nearly every disease killing us in later life, like Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, obesity, diabetes and stroke, has a causal link to lack of sleep." said Matthew Walker, a UC Berkeley professor of psychology and neuroscience.

“We’ve done a good job of extending life span, but a poor job of extending our health span. We now see sleep, and improving sleep, as a new pathway for helping remedy that.”

Numerous brain studies reveal how poor sleep leaves them cognitively worse off, reported by young people as mental fogginess and other symptoms of sleep deprivation.

Sleep more good or bad?
I sleep Everyday 9pm to a 430am.

That's 7.5 hours of sleep, which is about the average number of hours the average human needs. So you're pretty safe there.

So depending on your own personal unique genetic, biochemical and neurochemical needs, as well as your social, emotional and mental needs, it could be slightly less or slightly more than 7.5 hours, and may temporarily or permanently differ from day to day, week to week, month to month, and as you age over the years and decades.

See what your own body and brain tells you, in terms of whether that number of hours of sleep gives you optimum health and refreshment in your everyday life or not.

Also, while most people do well with monophasic sleep (ie,. one lump sum or one shot 8 hours), some people will find biphasic sleep (ie. split into 2 sleep periods of 4 hours each), or in rarer cases, polyphasic sleep, even healthier for their needs. Everyone has unique makeup and unique needs. Do whatever works for yourself.
