Dear Editors

I refer to the article “Many not following up after health screening” (Straits Times, Mar 27). It states that “Even after red flags show up in a health screening, it can take a lot to get people to see a doctor for a proper check-up. Medical groups which run health screenings say a significant proportion of people who need to follow up on their screening do not do so.

1 in 4 never return

SingHealth, which runs six to eight screenings a year, says one in four people who were screened between July 2015 and the same month last year had not returned for a doctor’s follow-up after a year. Healthcare professionals say many people do not see their results as being serious enough to warrant a doctor’s visit, or do not want any medication. Some say they are too busy. Dr Emily Ho, director (clinical) of the SingHealth Regional Health System, said: “Some prefer to control their conditions on their own, via diet and exercise.””

Scared not enough money?

As to “Some are scared to go in case the doctor detects something abnormal, and they have to spend money to treat it,” Dr Kalpana said. Not dealing with such ailments early leads to more money being spent when the conditions worsen” – these remarks may have highlighted one of the reasons why people may be reluctant to go for follow-up treatment – the reality or perception that healthcare may not be affordable?

Class C bill size 95th percentile – $24,465?

According to the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) web site – the Average Hospital Inpatient Bill Size Table -- Public Hospitals – Surgical Specialties (Jan 2015 – Dec 2015) – Class C (Open Ward) – Total Bill at 95th Percentile at the National Heart Centre was $24,465.

5% pay more than $24,465?

So, does this mean that five per cent of patients had a bill size of more than $24,465? How affordable is healthcare? Since this is the lowest class ward – what are your thoughts on how affordable healthcare is in Singapore?

Treatment is not endless. For most, it's about $24.5k a year.

$24.5k multiplied by how many years left to live or how much left in the bank before wipeout?

Singapore would be a good test bed for assisted suicide.

Gahment should give incentives. If you opt for suicide before the age of 70 and are healthy, you will get some funding to pass on to the children upon successful suicide.

Saves health care cost for Singapore and Singaporeans.

Schemes would be totally voluntary of course.

But in future people would not only say "in Singapore can die, but cannot get sick" but they would say "In Singapore lagi good to die, but cannot get sick".

Good gahment.

agree. propose a 3 tier system.

1st tier: healthy but volunteer to donate organs and body parts for others and research at age 69 or earlier. will get medal from president, permanent urn depository at columbarium, immediate cpf disbursement to beneficiaries with no minimum sum requirement, pioneer and passion card benefits to continue with beneficiaries, 3 plates of char kway teow per day for surviving spouse (to help quicken hisher demise), and have name listed on sg "who was who" instead of who's who.

2nd tier: not so healthy but volunteer to die after 69. since organs and body parts are not useful, just a medal and $69 angpow per month for beneficiaries until beneficiaries reach age 69.

3rd tier: not so healthy and will not volunteer to die after 69. no medal, no angpow, confiscate cpf, terminate pioneer and passion card benefits forever, no char kway teo's for beneficiaries, zilch. not only you die your biz surviving beneficiaries will be charged for body disposal. all 3rd tier sinkies must die, whether kicking and screaming or lying like a vege in bed.

make 1st tier so attractive that sinkies will find it too good to refuse. and they will praise the pap for such greatness.

Medical bills just a fraction of that cost.

Exactly, if yiu going to peg salaries as per private sectors, gahman serpant shld also pay as private citizens on med bills, no state benefits and no state funeral. No private sector will keep the CEO and pay his medical bills if he has Cancer, he be given the boot.

Singapore is not a democracy lah. It is a monarchy. But it is a elected monarchy. Which just shows the stupidity of the people.

When you start looking at the "gahment" as royalty, kings and queens, princes and princesses, barons and lordships, it will all make sense.

Then just remind yourself that all that is supported by a fully democratic process in which the common folk support the perpetuation of the monarchy by voting for them.

“Some prefer to control their conditions on their own, via diet and exercise.”

we all know that MOH, NHG, Singhealth medical practitioners are generally overpaid quacks who could NOT completely heal their patients in a couple of sessions.

The wiser (or wiser) Singaporean(s) would save his/her money by controlling their diet and engage in physical exercise to improve their health, their underlying condition and general well-being.

This in turn helps our public healthcare system greatly by not contributing to the excessive long queues at the public hospitals and clinics, thus saving time, money and resources.

win-win for both citizens and the government.
