President Tsai Ing-wen's Taiwanese government has warned the US and China to not use Taipei "in their own interest" during the meeting between President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.

Taiwan, which is thought to be concerned that it may be used a pawn by the two countries, said on Monday (20 March) that it must protect its own interest should the US and China choose to discuss Taipei in the face of increased risk of Chinese invasion.

"We call on the United States and China, when they improve relations, to not use Taiwan in their own interest or as a chess piece," said Catherine Chang, Taiwan's minister in charge of China affairs, the Mainland Affairs Council.

"In order to maintain stability and peace in the Asia Pacific region," China must communicate with Tsai's government, Reuters cited Chang as saying.

Her comments came after US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, during his Asia tour, told that Trump is anticipating a meeting with Xi "soon".

The US is Taiwan's only major political ally and sole arms supplier. And Washington is reportedly considering a new arms package for Taipei, a move that would more than likely anger China.

But China considers the self-governing island as a breakaway province that is ineligible for state-to-state relations. While Beijing has never used force to take back Taiwan, it has been deeply suspicious of Tsai's actions as it is of the opinion that her pro-democratic party might push for the formal independence of Taiwan.

Peng Sheng-chu, chief of Taiwan's National Security Bureau, said: "We should seek the greatest advantage in the interaction between the United States and China, to reduce the possibility of Communist China guiding and manipulating the US-China-Taiwan relationship."

While Peng did not elaborate on what measures Taiwan should take to safeguard its interest, he said it is unlikely that Trump-Xi meeting could hurt Taipei's interests. "But we do not rule out the possibility," Peng added.

In a report delivered to Taiwan's parliament on Thursday (16 March), Defence Minister Feng Shih-kuan said that the country was capable of launching missiles that could hit China.

Lawmaker Wang Ting-yu told AFP that Taiwanese missiles were capable of traveling more than 1,500km.

"It is the first time the ministry has confirmed this," he said.

While Taiwan has previously produced cruise missiles, it is thought to be the first time that it has explicitly detailed its capabilities.

"Should the enemy insist on invading, we will weaken their capabilities by striking enemy troops at their home bases, fighting them at sea, crushing them as they approach the coastlines, and wiping them out on the beaches," the defence report said.

TAIPEI (REUTERS) - Taiwan's government, worried about being used as a pawn by China and the United States, said on Monday (March 20) the island must protect its own interests, as concerns in Taipei rise ahead of an expected meeting between US and Chinese leaders.

China has never renounced the use of force to take back what it deems a wayward province and has been pressuring Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, who leads an independence-leaning ruling party, to concede Taiwan is a part of China.

The US is Taiwan's major political ally and sole arms supplier.

"We call on the United States and China, when they improve relations, to not use Taiwan in their own interest or as a chess piece," Ms Catherine Chang, Taiwan's minister in charge of China affairs, the Mainland Affairs Council, told reporters.

She urged Beijing to communicate with Taipei "in order to maintain stability and peace in the Asia Pacific region".

The comments come after US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday in Beijing that US President Donald Trump anticipates a meeting "soon".

At issue for Taipei is whether a Trump-Xi meeting will harm Taipei's interests as Washington begins considering a big, new arms package for Taiwan, a move sure to anger China.

In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said China’s resolute opposition to US arms sales to Taiwan was clear and consistent. “We hope the US fully recognises the high sensitivity and serious harmfulness of US arms sales to Taiwan,” she told a daily news briefing, adding that the United States should handle the Taiwan issue cautiously.

"We should seek the greatest advantage in the interaction between the United States and China, to reduce the possibility of Communist China guiding and manipulating the US-China-Taiwan relationship," said Mr Peng Sheng-chu, chief of Taiwan's National Security Bureau.

Mr Peng, who was answering questions at a parliamentary session, did not elaborate on what steps Taiwan should take, but said that based on the bureau's current intelligence, it was not likely that a new communique that could hurt Taiwan's interests would result from a Trump-Xi meeting.

"But we do not rule out the possibility," he added.

In December, Taiwan had celebrated a diplomatic coup when Mr Trump, as president-elect, took a congratulatory phone call from Ms Tsai and raised questions about whether he would stick with the four-decade-old "One China" policy.

Mr Trump changed tack last month and agreed to honour the "One China" policy during a phone call with his Chinese counterpart Xi.

Mr Tillerson left China with warm words from Mr Xi on the weekend, ending his first trip to Asia since taking office with an agreement to work together with China on North Korea and putting aside trickier issues.

Mr Xi praised increasing communications in recent weeks between Beijing and Washington, and said he is "confident" of seeing bilateral relations moving in the "right direction". Taiwan was discussed during the meeting, but details were not provided.

Completely no faith with the idiot Trump whose stands will shift like sand in the wind, and is nothing but an opportunistic businessman. Taiwan is shitlessly frightened, for their own fate being negotiated between Trump and Xi during summit coming around the corner.

That idiot Trump all of a sudden after Xi rejected his phone calls, just announced an unexpected ONE CHINA POLICY, near the CNY period.

USA is about the very final last straw for Taiwan to even maintain status quo, If Trump announced that Taiwan is a part of China during Xi's visit in exchange of some deals with Xi' for example regarding North Korean missiles, there is absolutely nothing left for Taiwan to even hang on, EU wont' live a finger to help except lips services, or the EU might even follow Trump's tone and please Beijing for some exchanged deals.

Taiwan will be Forced to Surrender within just months, and ALOONG with all the SAF Terrexs found on Taiwan Island will be confiscated impounded again under Xi's fingers.
