North Korea has performed a ground test of a “new-type” engine, designed to boost country’s “capability in the field of outer space.” However, in contrast to the usual saber-rattling, Pyongyang did not use the opportunity to tout the potential military use of the tech.

Kim Jong-un attended the test of the “new-type high-thrust engine” at the Sohae satellite-launching site early on Sunday, state KCNA news agency reported. The engine would give the country an opportunity to “consolidate the scientific and technological foundation to match the world-level satellite delivery capability in the field of outer space development,” KCNA said, citing country’s leader.

The specifications and type of the engine remain a mystery, but the supreme leader was so satisfied with the test that he gave lead developers and scientists a hug and a photo session, and emphasized that the “world will soon witness what eventful significance the great victory won today carries.”

Pyongyang claimed that the engine was created solely for space exploration and satellite launches and did not mention any of the usual militaristic rhetoric, which usually accompanies such tests.

The new tests comes amid heightened tensions in the Korean Peninsula. Denouncing annual US-led drills with Seoul last week, North Korea launched four missiles in a simulated attack on US facilities in the region, and vowed “merciless ultra-precision strikes from ground, air, sea and underwater” if the allies violate its “sovereignty and dignity even a bit.”

US President Donald Trump criticized N. Korea for “behaving very badly,” while Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said the US “did not rule out” nuclearizing Japan and South Korea amidst the growing threat.

Last week, the US military also began the deployment of its THAAD anti-missile system in S. Korea, despite Russia and China objecting to the move as being “counter-productive.”

Beijing said THAAD's deployment was harming the “regional strategic balance,” since it might damage China's nuclear deterrent capabilities and potentially fuel US first-strike ideas. Moscow said Washington was “instigating an arms race in the subregion.”

It means a higher trust force for missiles using new engine, it means not just higher speed, but heavier take off weight, can carry more fuel, reach longer range, carry bigger nuke warheads, or more number of multiple warheads. Because of higher missile speed it means also harder to intercept and that warning time is shorter for nuke to reach target, less time to flee your ass into underground bunkers. War heads are already above your head when air raid sirens is heard.

British Prime Minister to hold meetings with President Donald Trump Friday
Questions raised over effectiveness of Trident nuclear deterrent system

Washington (CNN)A missile test involving Britain's Trident nuclear deterrent system ended in failure off the coast of Florida last year, a US defense official with direct knowledge of the incident told CNN on Monday.
The official told CNN that the incident, which happened last June in an the area off the Florida coast used by the US and the UK for missile tests, did not in involve a nuclear warhead.

Britain's Sunday Times newspaper reported that the missile veered towards the US coast, but the US official told CNN that this trajectory was part of an automatic self-destruct sequence. The official said the missile diverted into the ocean -- an automatic procedure when missile electronics detect an anomaly.

A month after the test, the UK parliament approved the renewal of Trident at a cost of £40 billion. Unaware of the failure, members of the House of Commons voted by 472 votes to 117 in favor of renewal.

On Sunday, British Prime Minister Theresa May was asked four times during an interview with the BBC's Andrew Marr Show whether she knew of the missile failure before the vote. May refused to answer.
Government challenged on CNN report
Forced to make a statement on the controversy in the House of Commons on Monday, British Defense Secretary Michael Fallon said he had "absolute confidence" in Trident but refused to give "operational details" about the test.
CNN published this story just as Fallon spoke, and Mary Creagh, of the opposition Labour Party demanded to know why he would not give any further details.

Citing CNN's story she said: "The Secretary of State has advised us not to believe everything we read in the Sunday newspapers, but should we believe the [US] official who, while we've been sitting here debating, has confirmed to CNN that the missile did auto-self-destruct off the coast of Florida? And if that is the case, why is the British parliament and the British public the last people to know?"
Fallon once again declined to give "operational details".

Another Labour lawmaker, Chris Byrant, said the reporting by CNN and the Sunday Times demonstrated the need for a full investigation.
"We deplore the leakage of any information about the nuclear deterrent but it is not for me to comment on what may or may not be said by the United States administration," Fallon replied. "This is our submarine, our deterrent, and it is our responsibility to apply to it the very highest security classification."
May under fire
The UK government's refusal to discuss the missile failure has prompted criticism from opponents of the UK's nuclear deterrent.

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon tweeted: "This is a hugely serious issue. There should be full disclosure of what happened, who knew what/when, and why House of Commons wasn't told."
Earlier on Monday, a spokeswoman for May said she was briefed on the Trident test when she came into office.
The Prime Minister and the Defense Secretary are routinely informed about tests and their outcome, May's spokeswoman told reporters.

"These are known as a 'demonstration and shakedown' test. This test was in June (2016) under the last prime minister (David Cameron). On taking office the current Prime Minister (Theresa May) was briefed on a range of nuclear issues, including this. This test saw the submarine and crew successfully tested and certified."
May will become the first world leader to meet with new US President Donald Trump when they hold talks in Washington on Friday.

CNN's Barbara Starr reported from Washington. James Masters wrote from London. Richard Greene contributed to this report.

He celebrated Victory by Carrying his Missile Project Chief on his back!

Almost Impossible in NK that Kim Jong Nuke will carry his man like this. Only his men / women will carry him - regardless how heavy he is (I think he is 100+Kg) KNN!

He carried this Missile Project Chief like this means making this man a very honor in NK. See how shocked and uneasy the face of Missile Project Chief. I can tell you, if missile project failed, this is the man to be executed by Anti-Aircraft Machine Gun no joke. But Kim Jong Nuke make him a very honored and respected EPIC NATIONAL HERO. There will surely be a national monument for this man in future.

Now it is Ang Moh Trump's nightmare beginning, Kim Jong Nuke got the ICBM to whack globally already inside his palm.

I can see that Kim Jong Nuke is a very strong moral motivating leader more so better than his father and grandpa. His piggy-back motivation boost his military moral very highly. The men all willing to perform their very best. Ah Loong & LKY will never be able to motivate PAP better than Kim Jong Nuke regardless of what world top salary paid. He got his ICBM, SLBM, sub, nukes, etc advanced weapons all within very short time and under UN sanctions and poor budgets, definitely his men must had been working very hard and highly motivated to duties, or else these are impossible. Keep it up Ah Nuke! You are young and your future is better than Putin!

North Korea Revs the Engine of Its New High-Thrust Missile

By CHOE SANG-HUNMARCH 18, 2017

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea conducted a ground jet test of a newly developed high-thrust missile engine, the country’s state-run news media said on Sunday, even as Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson is in the region discussing tougher strategies to help end the North’s nuclear and missile programs.

The Korean Central News Agency said the test took place at the same northwest facility where the country has been launching rockets to put satellites into orbit, which Western officials have said were efforts to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile.

Although North Korea has never flight-tested an intercontinental ballistic missile, it has recently demonstrated significant progress in its missile programs with new engines that could potentially deliver a nuclear warhead as far away as the United States.

Mr. Tillerson is in Asia, holding discussions with Japan, South Korea and China. In Seoul, South Korea, on Friday, he said that two decades of international efforts to end North Korea’s nuclear weapons program have failed, and he warned that all options should be on the table, including pre-emptive military action.

In August, North Korea said it had successfully tested a submarine-launched ballistic missile, after failing on several earlier attempts. Last month, it launched a new type of intermediate-range ballistic missile it said could carry a nuclear payload. And earlier this month, North Korea launched four ballistic missiles at the same time.

Since Kim Jong-un took power in 2011, North Korea has launched 46 ballistic missiles, including 24 last year, in violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions, according to South Korean officials.

CNN military analyst Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling said advances in North Korea's rocket system could help with the country's development of ICBMs -- intercontinental ballistic missiles.
"Some of these technologies which the North Koreans are including in their rocket expansion program actually have to do with a covert method of firing missiles without being detected in advance of actually exploding the devices. So that's part of the issue," Hertling said.
"The other piece is when you're talking about an intercontinental ballistic missile, the types of warheads and the amount of weight that are in the missile itself have to be launched off of a pad. And the better they can improve their technology to do that, the more accurate these systems are going to be -- not only from leaving the pad, but also going into the atmosphere and then hitting the target on the other side."

'Historic significance'
State media said the test was successful and marked an event of "historic significance" that could lead to the rebirth of the country's indigenous rocket industry.

North Korea rocket-engine test shows "meaningful" progress: South Korea

SEOUL (REUTERS) - North Korea's latest rocket-engine test showed "meaningful" progress, South Korea said on Monday (March 20), while an analyst said it was a dangerous step towards the North's goal of developing a rocket that could hit the United States.

The North's KCNA news agency said on Sunday the engine would help North Korea achieve world-class satellite-launch capability, indicating a new type of rocket engine for an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

The North's announcement of a successful engine test came as US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson was in Beijing at the end of his first visit to Asia for talks dominated by concern about North Korea's nuclear and missile programmes.

"Through this test, it is found that engine function has made meaningful progress but further analysis is needed for exact thrust and possible uses," Mr Lee Jin Woo, deputy spokesman for the South Korean defence ministry, told a regular briefing.

State-run North Korean media reported that leader Kim Jong Un had hailed the successful test of a new high-thrust engine at its rocket launch station as "a new birth" of its rocket industry.

Mr Lee said the test featured a main engine supported by four supplementary engines.

However, he did not elaborate on the progress the test showed the North had made, nor comment on whether the engine could be used for ICBM. He said the South Korean military was conducting analysis.

US President Donald Trump told reporters he held meetings on North Korea at the weekend at his Florida resort. While he did not refer specifically to the rocket-engine test, he said Mr Kim Jong Un was "acting very, very badly".

A South Korean analyst said the test was an ominous development.

"This was a comprehensive test for the first-stage rocket for an ICBM, and that is why it was dangerous," said analyst Kim Dong Yub at Seoul's Institute for Far Eastern Studies. "It appears that North Korea has worked out much of its development of the first-stage rocket booster."

North Korea has conducted five nuclear tests and a series of missile launches in defiance of United Nations sanctions, and is believed by experts and government officials to be working to develop nuclear-warhead missiles that could reach the US.

North Korean leader Kim said in January his country was close to test-launching an ICBM. That would put parts of the US in range.

Last week, Mr Tillerson issued the Trump administration's starkest warning yet to North Korea, saying in Seoul that a military response would be "on the table" if it took action to threaten South Korean and US forces.

The US has long called on China to do more to rein in its ally, North Korea. China resents being pressed to do more, saying the problem is between North Korea and the US, although it too objects to the North's nuclear programme.

No formal agreements were announced during Mr Tillerson's visit to China although the two sides said they would work together to try to make North Korea take "a different course".

China has called for a dual-track approach on North Korea, urging it to suspend its tests, and the US and South Korea to suspend military exercises, so both sides can return to talks.

Beijing has also been infuriated by the deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (Thaad) anti-missile defence system in South Korea, which it says will both harm China's own security and do nothing to ease tensions.

China says the system's powerful radar will extend into the country's north-east and potentially track Chinese missile launches, and maybe even intercept them. Russia also opposes the system, for the same reasons.
