SINGAPORE: The name of an exhibition on World War II-era Singapore will be changed, out of respect for the people who suffered under the Japanese Occupation.

The exhibition, titled Syonan Gallery: War and Its Legacies will now be called Surviving the Japanese Occupation: War and its Legacies, said Minister for Communications and Information Yaacob Ibrahim in a statement on Friday (Feb 17).

Some thoughts on Syonan and the backtracking

Backtracking barely after a week, a hastily crafted apology, and eggs on the faces of the PAP. Yaacob was grabbed by his banana and ate humble pie.

How could a team of scholars come up with such an incendiary name without anyone pointing out the obvious consequences. Did they even talk to a Pioneer G person before the naming?

Here's what would have been different under the LKY Old Guard:

(i) LKY Old Guard would have better sense than to name the gallery Syonan which translates into Light of the South. Basically calling it the Light of the South Gallery. It is a name given by the aggressor, and a name not recognized by every brave soul and every courageous nation who fought and opposed the aggressor.

(ii) And if LKY Old Guard had gone ahead and done something unpopular, the cabinet, the MPs, and the grassroots would have worked in unison to manage and temper public opinion. The flames of discontent no matter how strong would have been significantly reduced after some time.

So we have:

(a) an establishment made up by nerdy scholars out of touch with the real world - a product of decades of a failed scholar system

(b) an incompetent govt with no basic common sense

(c) unable to manage public opinion in the same way LKY old guard would have, and essentially caved in after a week

PAP should be grateful that during Syonan time, lky and Nathan was working for the Japs, who were killing Singaporeans.

If Yaacob and Khaw was serious about what happened they would have removed the CEO but then again we yet another MOH like situation where the wife of a cabinet colleague is the CEO.

It is beyond belief that an entire Board and Management Team made of Chinese had no clue what happened. And it is the National Library not the Department of Sanitation and where knowledge and awareness surely must be key to any appointment. Did it have to take Old Man's long standing Mandarin tutor to pen the letter about the Japanese atrocities that did it.

The name of the gallery has been changed to "Surviving the Japanese Occupation: War and its Legacies." It's too long and tedious to pronounce. Can we just call it the 'Sook Ching Gallery" for short?

If nothing else, this shows the cluelessness of our leadership and their minions. Most countries celebrate their liberation. We mark the surrender. I saw battalions of NSmen trooping in and out of the gates of the old ford factory. What's the message ? And that unfortunate name. If we really want to show the horror of war then go all the way. The documentation of atrocities is extensive.

Anzac Day in Singapore goes unmarked by Singaporeans . Aussie, NZ and U.K. nationals gather at the War Cemetary to Honour those who gave up their lives to free this Island.
Where is the tribute to Lim Bo Seng ? Lt Adnan ?

Pappies dun want us to celebrate liberation as they dun want us to know freedom.
They like to use scare tactics to coerce us into submission.
They dun want us to pay tribute or remember the real heroes so the fake so called founding Father can be the only hero god to be worshipped.
Jap collaborator cum traitor as founding Father. This really takes the cake

Can't they do something meaningful...never! Yakult defended the name, now backtrack...that shows how unproductive the ministers are these days. Under the late LKY, it will be thoroughly researched before it is put forth & named or it will be thoroughly shaft down our throats & we would not dare to protest..it will be called "syonan"....

Why don't they just k.I.S.S......keep it simple idiot....just name it Ford Factory Memorial...."war & its legacies" as a tagline....simple right?

They never factor that after so many years, the wounds of the last world war & especially the horrors of the Japanese slaughtering of people have not healed.....many still bear the pain of " when Singapore was Synonan". Yakult should change the currency notes we are using remove that face & replace it with bananas...after all, what is a name?, what is picture?

Anyway...Yakult is never known to use his intelligence...if he has any!

A rare occurrence indeed for a Minister to actually say "I am sorry for the pain". I wonder if it was one of those calls where he was told "you know what you need to do" ("I have reflected deeply"? - errr as an afterthought in an arena where you've always just done whatever you wanted without having paid heed to alternative views is not very convincing). What is the government protocol for u-turning a decision under public pressure/populism?

The "event" was also choreographed for maximum impact with CNA filming (yet again) multiple foreign workers "dismantling" the name.

And the flip-flopping on how the permanent space at the "former Ford Factory" (cited on the 4 languages signboard leading into the road) was actually a temporary exhibition (the signboard had disappeared on Thursday).

If they only finally made the move because of Dr Chua Chee Lay's letter rather than the general outpouring of disbelief (Bilahari's dismissal of those as merely "Singaporeans are very literal minded or perhaps just enjoy stirring" since it was obvious to him that "if only the people that objected to name something is not necessarily to honour it and that given the purpose of this exhibit could not possibly have honoured it") the lack of common sense when handling the gruesome experience of occupation is truly damning. And no wonder the Emperor continues to be so fashionable in his Clothes.
