SINGAPORE: A 48-year-old Singaporean woman was injured by a falling tree on Monday (Feb 13), at a carpark at Yuan Ching Road. It is the second such incident in three days, after a massive Tembusu tree toppled at the Singapore Botanic Gardens on Saturday, killing one person and injuring four others.

Monday's incident happened at the carpark of Block 134D Yuan Ching Road, outside a block of student apartments. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that it received a call for assistance at about 2.30pm.

The injured woman, Janet Cher, was in a lorry with her brother and a friend's daughter when the tree fell on the vehicle. Her brother, Adam Cher, said his sister was hit on the head and knocked unconscious as she was getting out of the vehicle but the lorry's door helped to shield her from further impact.

"But I think that her skull might be fractured," Mr Cher said in Mandarin. He and the girl were not injured. Ms Cher was taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital where she is in a stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit.

The area where the tree fell is managed by the Singapore Land Authority (SLA).

In a statement on Monday, an SLA spokesperson said the incident is under investigation. "Trees and greenery in state properties are maintained on a regular basis. Our priority now is to provide assistance to the family of the affected party whom we are in touch with," SLA added.

Soon the whole policy of having a "green city" with all the tree planting and what not is going blow up for Singaporeans.

In the beginning it sounds like a great idea. Green city, greenery in an urban city. Good.

But ALL trees have a lifespan. With SO MANY trees in Singapore planted within urban settings, time's up for some of them. And if the government doesn't inspect and decide which needs to be cut down (trust me they DO NOT have the manpower or budget to do this) then expect more disasters from falling trees. It is easy to plant a tree in a Tropical Rainforest climate. Heck even 5 year olds can do it. But to cut down a tree and dispose of it......whole different ball game.

Getting killed by a falling tree is nothing more than bad luck. When there are large numbers of trees around some will fall and some unlucky soul will be injured or killed. Trees are essential for life. The more the better.

Innocent bystanders get killed by vehicles on a regular basis all over the world too but we're not about to tear up the roading infrastructure just because of the inherent risks.

Life is a risky business. We have to learn to manage it and get on with living and putting the possibility of death to the back of our minds.

This is utter rubbish! We live to die, with every step and every breath ever closer to death. Life is short, live on the wild side :p:p:p

Err Sam, when was the last time you went back to Singapore?

I was back in 2015. A lot of those roadside trees are now HUGE towering behemoths! In my opinion they represent a definite risk. The tree in the backyard of my parent's place had grown over 3 storeys high and towered over the neighbors house and it was tilting. I remember it as a 1 metre "Xmas" tree we planted back in 1990.

The Tropical Rainforest climate allows trees to grow all year round. They get lots of water and sunshine. Growth rate is tremendous.

Some of these huge branches falling off onto busy roads can cause lots of damage and injury.

Yes it is true that it boils down to luck. But those hazards are now ever present in Singapore.

We don't have that type of foliage on Calgary's roads.

The bigger the tree the more carbon dioxide it absorbs and this has to be good for the planet.

Will a few people be killed once in a while? of course they will but we need to look at the bigger picture. The number of people killed by trees is minuscule compared to the statistics from influenza, road accidents, industrial accidents and natural disasters.

Just treat the issue as part and parcel of a living in a densely populated city.

When more than 1 coincident it is no longer a coincident. It means the world is unnatural.

One word: Fate.

if the higher powers have destined someone to be killed by a tree, so be it.

anyway trees have been around longer than humans, mother nature has been felling trees even before humans existed.
