Singapore, Malaysia police crack down on 'Africa scam' with more than 100 victims

By Sumisha Naidu, Malaysia Correspondent, Channel NewsAsia Posted 13 Feb 2017 12:07 Updated 13 Feb 2017 16:32

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Singapore authorities have thwarted four syndicates behind an "Africa scam", where more than 100 victims - mostly women - suffered total losses exceeding S$6.4 million in fake online relationships.

Thirty-four people have been arrested in various states, 13 of whom were Nigerians, according to the authorities on Monday (Feb 13).

Malaysia's Commercial Crimes Department and Singapore's Commercial Affairs Department said they successfully cracked down on the "Africa scam". (Photo: Sumisha Naidu)

The scammers got to know their victims in Singapore and Malaysia through social media , usually under the pretext of entering a relationship.

At some point along the way, the scammers would tell their victims they were sending them gifts or even coming to visit them.

That was when things would go wrong - the victims would be asked to transfer money to bank accounts supposedly belonging to customs or immigration to secure the release of the gifts or the person themselves.

David Chew from Singapore Commercial Affairs Department said: "These guys are on the internet, posing as doctors, professionals, making friends with people around the world. The third one is once I become good friends with you, I can ask you to make investments, to give me loans. Of course, they never intend to return the money and when it's time for them to pay back the money, they're suddenly uncontactable. The modalities in which I can cheat a person who I trust is multifaceted."

Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani, head of Commercial Crimes Department, Royal Malaysia Police said: "These people are very good with the way they are tickling the feelings, the emotions, the hearts of the potential victims. So be aware."

Police believe there are more scammers out there.

In 2016 alone, more than 2000 investigation papers were opened over this type of scheme in Malaysia.

Singapore, Malaysia act against love scam syndicates, 27 arrested

SINGAPORE — Twenty-seven suspects were arrested in various Malaysian states in a cross-border operation against syndicates running love scams on the Internet, the police said in a press release on Monday (Feb 13).

They include 13 Nigerian nationals, who are believed to be involved in 108 cases of such scams reported by victims in both Singapore and Malaysia, where the losses amounted to about RM21.6 million (S$6.9 million).

Police also seized telecommunication devices, computers and ATM cards from the suspects.

The operation was jointly conducted between Feb 6 and 8 by Malaysia’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) and Singapore’s Commercial Affairs Department (CAD).

The police said in their statement that this is “the first successful joint investigation between the two departments against elusive criminals involved in syndicated Internet love scams”.

They added that CAD gave timely information to CCID, allowing investigators to establish the suspects’ identities, and while arrest operations were going on in Malaysia, CAD coordinated concurrent investigations against six female suspects in Singapore for transferring criminal proceeds to Malaysia-based suspects.

Last Friday, at its annual crime statistics briefing, the police said that the trend of online cheating scams still remain a concern in Singapore.

The number continues to rise, almost doubling from 385 cases in 2015 to 636 cases in 2016.

Money cheated from such scams also doubled, with S$24 million reported last year — the largest amount being S$1.7 million.

To prevent falling victim to these love scams, the police advised the public to be cautious when making friends online, and not to send money to people they barely know.

“Be in control of your emotions and meet all requests for money with a cool head, knowing that it may be a scam,” the police said. Those in doubt should call the police’s anti-scam helpline at 1800 722 6688.

Most of these ladies were discarded by SG men. They are desperate. Cant get SG men, any men can do too.

I know of a SG girl who were used heavily and extensively by SG men and then discarded. She finally settled for an ang moh who doesnt mind her past indiscretions.

This shows that women need men.

Men no need to have women by their side. it is a hassle and inconvenience.
