SINGAPORE - A sea turtle more than a metre long was found dead along Changi Beach on Monday (Jan 2), believed to have been cut by a ship propeller.

ST reader Chandran V. R. told The Straits Times that he had been jogging at about 8.30am when he saw the carcass from a distance.

"At first I thought - how come this bulky item is there. Initially I didn't know what it was," said the 46-year-old managing director of a real estate agency.

He had been jogging along the Casuarina Cove Trail, near the Changi Ferry Terminal, when he noticed a bad smell.

Mr Chandran went closer and saw a dead turtle, more than a metre long, on the sand.

"It looked like it had been dead for at least two to three days," he said.

He then contacted the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA), as he "didn't want anyone to disrespect this carcass".

"It is a beautiful creature which got into trouble and lay dead on our shores. I just wanted the carcass to be discarded respectfully," said Mr Chandran.

He added that he believes AVA has retrieved the carcass, based on location markers he sent to them.

"You don't usually get to see a turtle of that size in Singapore waters," he said.

The Straits Times has contacted AVA for more information.

Ms Anbarasi Boopal, deputy chief executive of the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society (Acres), expressed dismay at the turtle's death.

She told The Straits Times that Acres had previously rescued an injured olive ridley turtle which was also possibly hit by a propeller. It was rehabilitated and released back to the wild.

A dolphin carcass washed up on a beach at East Coast Park in July last year (2016).

Ayear before that (July 2015), a sperm whale carcass was found off Jurong Island, and its skeleton put up for exhibition at the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum in March last year (2016).

It's a good omen. The turtle chose Singapore to be its final resting place after being cut up by the Liaoning in the South China Sea.

Your limited knowledge is exposed. It is impossible for anything from the CSC to be floated onto Singapore shore due to the direction of sea/ocean currents.

agree absolutely, the liaoning did an illegal U-turn and "cut" across the sea turtle's path (and its back), and it then turned-turtle. it then wanted to be close to the chinese swimming club at east coast for its final resting place

Large monitor lizard dies after being run over on busy Buangkok road

A Stomp contributor alerted the citizen journalism website to a video circulating online which shows a monitor lizard in the middle of a busy road in Buangkok.

A netizen recorded a live video of the large reptile on his Facebook page at around 6pm on Feb 3.

In the video, the lizard can be seen motionless on the second lane of the road.

There were several vehicles around it.

According to The Straits Times, the presence of the reptile caused a minor traffic jam.
Drivers had to slow down their vehicles to avoid running over the creature.

A driver said that the monitor lizard had moved to the side of the road when he left the area. It was however killed later on after getting hit by a car, reported Roads.sg.

Said Deputy chief executive officer of Acres Mr Kalai Vanan: "Water monitor lizards are commonly found throughout the island. Unfortunately, because we are heavily urbanised, wild animals often get stranded, and in this case, fall victims to traffic accidents."

Fallen Tembusu tree at Botanic Gardens kills 1, injures 4

UPDATED: 6:15 PM, FEBRUARY 12, 2017

SINGAPORE — A 38-year-old woman from India was killed and four others injured when a 40m tall Tembusu tree collapsed in the Singapore Botanic Gardens on Saturday afternoon (Feb 11), shortly before the start of a concert and movie screening.

The deceased's husband, a 39-year-old French national, and their two children, both aged one, were among the injured. A 26-year-old Singaporean woman was also hurt during the incident, the police said.

The tree, which had a 6.5m girth, was uprooted at 4.25pm at the edge of the Palm Valley in the Botanic Gardens, near the Shaw Foundation Symphony Stage, the Nationals Parks Board (NParks) said in a statement.

"We are investigating the cause of the tree fall. Our priority now is to accord assistance to the families of the deceased and the injured," said Mr Kenneth Er, chief executive officer of NParks.

According to NParks, the tree that fell was more than 270 years old and predated the establishment of the Gardens. It was last inspected in September last year and was found to be healthy.

"As an SBG Heritage tree, it was inspected twice a year, which is of a higher frequency than other trees in the Gardens," said Mr Er. "The tree was also protected by a lightning conductor and fenced off to prevent compaction of its root zone by visitors. Leaf litter is routinely applied to the root zone to encourage healthy root growth."

The fallen Tembusu tree brought down several surrounding palm trees during the incident. The injured were taken to the National University Hospital on Saturday. The extent of their injurires are unclear.

In a Facebook post, the High Commission of Canada in Singapore expressed sympathy for the friends and families of the injured, adding: "We are sincerely grateful to those who came so quickly to the aid of those injured."

The High Commission had organised the event to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday through music and film. It was due to start at 5pm.

An eyewitness video posted on social media showed park goers rushing to the aid of what appeared to be victims trapped by the fallen tree. The SCDF said it sent two fire engines, one Red Rhino, one Fire Bike, four ambulances and two support vehicles to the scene.

Following the incident, the Singapore Botanic Gardens announced that all programmes scheduled at the park on Sunday have been cancelled. Events scheduled in the park on Sunday include a Valentines' Day musical performance at the Bandstand.

I'm more worried about the ship propeller than some stupid darwinist turtle roadkill.what happens if a flying turtle flew into a jet engine and it exploded along with the wing and sent a 300 passenger jet into the sea?
