SINGAPORE: The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) on Wednesday (Nov 16) said it had terminated the employment of CEO Edmund Kwok with effect from Nov 14.

In its press release, NKF said a three-member executive committee (exco) appointed by the board will assume all duties and responsibilities of the CEO until mid-December when the former CEO, Mrs Eunice Tay, will return to take over responsibilities of the CEO from this exco while the search for a new CEO goes on.

"The Board of NKF would like to assure all stakeholders, including patients, donors,
supporters and employees, that Mr Kwok's personal indiscretion has nothing to do with the
stewardship of our finances. Our operations are not affected by this matter and our services
to patients and beneficiaries continue as per normal," it added.

Mr Kwok had joined NKF in 2012, and was serving as the Chief Operating Officer under then-CEO Mrs Tay before assuming the reins in November 2013. The latter had taken the mantle in 2006 from then-interim CEO Goh Chee Leok in the aftermath of the leadership reshuffle resulting from the entire NKF board resigning in 2005.

He was previously the vice president of oncology at Parkway Healthcare and also had stints at Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the Institute of Mental Health.

Mr Edmund Kwok's name was missing from NKF's organisation chart, which indicated it was effective Nov 14 this year.

The latest development casts another shadow on the VWO’s chequered past. In 2004, it was embroiled in a financial scandal involving another CEO, Mr T. T. Durai, who was eventually found to have abused his authority by privileging himself and those he chose to favour. For instance, he admitted to having used the VWO’s funds to maintain his personal car, travel frequently on first-class flights and finance a fleet of eight chauffeured cars used for both official and private purposes.

Both civil and criminal lawsuits were filed against the former CEO, who repaid S$4.05 million he owed the charity and also served two-thirds of the three-month jail sentence given to him for deceiving NKF into paying S$20,000 to his interior design friend David Tan. He started his jail term in June 2008 after he lost his appeal to the High Court against his conviction and sentencing the year before.

As a result of this incident, a new board of directors and leadership, led by Mr Gerard Ee as chairman, were appointed to rebuild NKF’s reputation. They restructured the way the VWO was run to improve fiscal prudence, accountability and transparency, as well as its core services to patients.

In an interview with 938LIVE’s On The Record last December, Mr Ee shared that the main challenge he faced after taking over NKF in 2005 was that the organisation had lost the support and trust of the general public. “We needed to have that basic trust, and then deal with the issues,” he said then.

When contacted after NKF's announcement, Mr Ee said he was "surprised" at the news and that "he had no idea on the background" of the termination, adding that he could not comment without knowing more.

Last time it was the scandal with T.T. Durai & now we see another scandal
The people at NKF must be under worked that they have so much free time to cause so many problems. You've probably heard the proverb "Idle hands make mischief"

Haven't heard about Ho Ching lately. This "idle" person must be up to something big

All these dodgy charity bullshit meant to enrich themselves using patients as excuses.
Take $10 from you, pay themselves $9.90, give 10 cents subsidy to the patients' discounted treatment.

SINGAPORE: The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) said on Wednesday (Nov 16) it has sacked CEO Edmund Kwok, citing "personal indiscretion" as the reason for terminating his employment.

In a statement to the media, NKF said the termination took effect on Nov 14. A three-member executive committee appointed by the board will assume Mr Kwok's duties and responsibilities until mid-December, when former CEO Eunice Tay returns to take over while the search for a new CEO goes on, it said.

"The board of NKF would like to assure all stakeholders, including patients, donors, supporters and employees, that Mr Kwok's personal indiscretion has nothing to do with the stewardship of our finances. Our operations are not affected by this matter and our services to patients and beneficiaries continue as per normal," it added.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) said in a statement that it has been informed of Mr Kwok's sacking. "We note that the board has put in place plans to ensure business continuity, and we will work with NKF to ensure that services to patients are not disrupted," it said.

STAFF TIGHT-LIPPED, PATIENTS SURPRISED OVER SACKING

NKF staff at headquarters were tight-lipped when approached on Wednesday morning, with one stating they had been “told not to comment". A senior staff nurse at an NKF Dialysis Centre confirmed a company-wide email was issued this morning informing of their CEO's dismissal, but declined to reveal more details.

When more media began arriving, security moved to relegate reporters from the building lobby to the main road outside.

A handful of dialysis patients Channel NewsAsia spoke to expressed surprise at the news, describing Mr Kwok as a "nice man” who often made the effort to visit and chat with them.

Mr Anthony Murthi, 58, who has kidney failure from diabetes said he has been going to NKF for dialysis for 10 years now.

"I'm very surprised. He's a really nice chap, since he took over from the lady he always comes to talk to us, ask about our problems, chit-chat ... he knows about my family background too."

Mr Kwok joined NKF in 2012, and was serving as chief operating officer under then-CEO Mrs Tay before assuming the reins in November 2013. The latter had taken the mantle in 2006 from then-interim CEO Goh Chee Leok in the aftermath of the leadership reshuffle resulting from the entire NKF board resigning in 2005.

NKF CEO's Sacking

NKF CEO has been sacked.

NKF is a Voluntary Organisation which receives donations from Singaporeans. Many average Singaporeans donate to NKF for a "good cause".

As such can the NKF refuse to reveal the reason for the CEO's sacking?

NKF CEO Edmund Kwok sacked over personal indiscretion involving male staff

SINGAPORE - National Kidney Foundation (NKF) CEO Edmund Kwok was sacked due to a personal indiscretion involving a male employee, NKF said at a press conference on Wednesday (Nov 16).

A meeting with the NKF board was held on Friday (Nov 11) night after the employee complained to his supervisor, and the matter was brought up to the human resources department. It was decided then that Mr Kwok would be sacked, said NKF chairman Koh Poh Tiong.

A police report was made on Tuesday .

"We acted immediately. We agreed that there will be no cover up," said Mr Koh. "We want to be upfront with all our stakeholders."

NKF is operating "as normal", and the incident had nothing to do with the "stewardship of finances", he added.

The search for a new CEO has started, and a few candidates have been identified.

Re: NKF CEO Edmund Kwok sacked over personal indiscretion involving male staff

SINGAPORE – The National Kidney Foundation (NKF) sacked its chief executive officer Edmund Kwok over his “personal indiscretion” with a male staff member, the charity's senior leadership disclosed at a press conference on Wednesday (Nov 16) evening.

NKF chairman Koh Poh Tiong said the board formed an inquiry and discipline committee on Sunday to discuss the case. Mr Kwok was called up to respond to the charges, and the board agreed on the same night that there should be “no cover up” given the “seriousness of the case”.

As advised by their lawyers that it is a “reportable offence”, they agreed immediately that Mr Kwok should be terminated and he was informed on Monday. A police report was also lodged.

Mr Koh took pains to stress at the press conference that this incident had nothing to do with the stewardship of the finances, and will not affect the close to 4,000 patients the charity served, as well as its donors, supporters or employees.

The announcement on the termination came suddenly on Wednesday morning.

The govt should just close down NKF and take charge of kidney dialysis as part of medishield life instead of leaving it to charity.
