Retired Gen. Martin Dempsey, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is set to replace Jerry Colangelo as the chairman of USA Basketball, league sources told The Vertical.

The USA Basketball board of directors will approve Dempsey’s candidacy at a Nov. 14 meeting.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver hired Dempsey as a consultant in October 2015, and he has served as the chairman of the Junior NBA Leadership Council.

Colangelo will continue as managing director of the senior men’s national team and plans to work through the 2020 Olympics with new national team coach Gregg Popovich.

Colangelo served eight years as USA Basketball chairman and started as managing director of the men’s national team in 2005. Under Colangelo, the men’s national team has gone 88-1, winning Olympic gold medals in 2008, 2012 and 2016.

As chairman of USA Basketball, Dempsey’s focus will be on the business and relationships of the broad-based national team programs, including cultivating relationships within the NBA and NCAA. At the time of Dempsey’s appointment under Silver, the NBA commissioner called him “one of our country’s most respected leaders, as well as a brilliant strategist.”

One of the central focuses of the new chairman’s job will be the development of youth basketball players across the country, sources told The Vertical. Grassroots basketball has become an increasing focus of USA Basketball, which has tried to build programs focused on fundamentals for young players.

u.s. is giving retiring generals a 2nd chance at earning more money by hiring them into roles that have nothing to do with the military. sounds like copying sg in placing saf generals in juicy jobs?

Speaking of U.S. basketball, I would like to dedicate Michael Jordan's legendary 69 points (against the Cleveland Cavaliers in 1990) to you! :p

epic cumback by chicago cubs to win world series was the big news last night. cleveland folks in ohio are pissed, depressed, stay at home and cry, and will refrain from voting in droves to drown their sorrows.

As Game 7 of the World Series approaches, memories of His Airness and the 1989 shot hover

By Barry Werner

The droughts are on the line Wednesday -- weather permitting -- when the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians play a winner-take-all seventh game for the World Series championship at Progressive Field.

Will the Indians capture the finale and end a string of no World Series titles since 1948 or will the Cubs take the crown and break a drought since 1908?

The Cubs' rally from a 3-1 deficit puts them in position to tear the hearts out of Cleveland sports fans, who saw their Cavaliers end the city's title drought by overcoming a 3-1 deficit against the Golden State Warrriors in the NBA Finals earlier this year.

This would not be the first time Chicago had a chance to savage Cleveland.

On May 7, 1989, the Cavaliers were looking to take a best-of-five series from the Chicago Bulls.

The series came down to the final seconds of the deciding game with Cleveland leading 100-99 when this happened:

Per Sports Illustrated from May 15, 1989:

With Chicago trailing by one point and the clock showing just three seconds, Jordan caught an inbounds pass that everyone knew was headed his way and took a shot that everyone knew he was going to take. Adding to the degree of difficulty was the flying form of a 6'7" defender, Craig Ehlo, who darkened Jordan's horizon from the right side for a split second. No problem. Jordan simply double-clutched on the 18-foot shot and sent it spinning toward the hoop with perfect rotation. It rattled the back of the rim and went in, his 43rd and 44th points of the game, giving the Bulls a 101-100 victory.

''Un-fath-om-able,'' said Cavs center Brad Daugherty, emphatically. ''Simply unfathomable.''

Indians fans are hoping they don't echo the same thoughts following Game 7.

the warriors could have closed out the nba finals last year by defeating cleveland with 3 games to spare after leading the series 3-1. but the cavaliers broke the jinx and ended the drought. the browns though will still remain a loser in the nfl.
