Don't qualify. In terms of profession and respect across public, private sectors and within the community the person who comes to mind is Po'ad Mattar. He is a chartered accountant that helmed one of the big 4, sat for years on PSC and then Council for Presidential Advisors. He however does not qualify under the auto-track.

I think Po'ad Mattar doesnt qualify

1) The Government has already listed it own recommendations in the white paper- agreeing to most and dismissing some from the Commission.

2) PAP controls more than 2/3rds of Parliament and therefore do no need any help or vote from Opposition to pass the bill.

3) The PAP has not lifted the whip on its members to these amendments. That's means that all PAP MPs must vote the same - along party lines

4) Unless couple of PAP MPs die of heart attack, it will be passed.

nothing is confirmed until Parliament approves the White Paper.

It sounds so silly for the pap to stoop so low to change the Constitution. Hope this attempt will churn up some good candidates to want to challenge PAP's candidate.

Tan Cheng Bok will be qualified for EP if he converts to Muslim.

The pap is talking race politics and specifies Malay race, not religion.

Will pap be so kiasu that the criteria will be Malay Muslim? That will disqualify any non Malay Muslim.

Will there be a caveat for those candidates who qualified before?

Baba and Nyonya is considered Malay or Chinese?

Clearly, as can be seen from forum postings, more than a few chaps here think that the govt regrets implementing the EP but is too politically proud to admit it. Thus, the charade must continue.

I'm also sure I'm not the only one who gets the distinct impression that the PAP has a very fine-tuned list of candidates whom they deem as acceptable, and have narrowed the criteria very precisely so that no one outside that list will qualify.

The past few days has also seen Shanmugam at his worst. Making no sense whatsoever. What's this nonsense about not electing CPA members so as not to politicize the CPA. And also being incredibly vague on the question whether the new criteria is designed to exclude certain individuals.

TCB knows from the start it was meant to exclude him, but he must play the cards only when they are presented and not jump the gun. Am sure TJS would have jumped the gun were he in TCB's shoes.

As for Malay Muslim, that is not the point. And more than a few Malays and indians see this as mere tokenism, which is what it really is. Worse, race is once again being used as a cover to hide the PAP's true agenda.

This PAP White Paper reveals the worst of LHL and the PAP. It is petty, silly, racist, kiasu and is a laughing stock. It helps no one but hurts every Singaporean

The PAP knows that most Singaporeans have long concluded that it reverse engineered the whole process from start to end. But they prepared to hand over whatever integrity they have left to do it because they cannot afford another embarrassment.

The conduct of Shanmugam is shameless. Imagine someone with first class honours stooping this low.

he has already chosen who to be president. all this is just a charade to get the person into office.

Yes, everyone knows it is a charade to ensure that the pap chosen candidate prevails. And that's why the pap is a laughing stock and more Singaporeans will lose respect for LHL

Will Singaporeans surprise LHL and the pap at the next EP Election.

Will:

1. A strong and independent Singaporean step forward to challenge the PAP's endorsed candidate.
2. Singaporeans vote decisively for this candidate at the voting booth
