Chitchat Removal of the NMP Scheme

The NMP Scheme was introduced in 26 years ago in 1990 and despite the passage of time over a quarter of a century, it has proven to be a dud in the main. The only ones that seem to does something during their time as an NMP were Walter Woon, Siew Kum Hong and Laurence Lien.

The scheme was famous when Dr Tan Cheng Bock voted against the scheme when the PAP did not lift the whip and he was subsequently cautioned by his party.

The capitulation by the 3 NMPs over the Administration of Justice (Protection) Bill was not just another failure of the scheme. The fact that none of the 3 could explain themselves why they ended up voting for the bill after proposing 14 amendments. The reasons cited are insult to one's intelligence.

When Catherine Lim wrote 2 articles offering her views, she was challenged to enter the political space ad stand for elections. Some how NMPs need not do so.

Why spend money on people that seem to use it to further their own agendas an enhance their CVs. If it indeeds works, the Govt should have no issues citing examples and evidence how the NMP scheme actually benefitted the country.

The best NMP was Siew Kum Hong. Not just because he (was) generally perceived as anti establishment. He is articulate and was the only one who exhibited the willingness to think and speak independently. You also did not have to agree with him on every issue to appreciate his point of view

Nominated MP, as its name implies, are nominated by kakis.

Selection and approval for nomination are also by a panel nominated by, directly or indirectly, by PAP.

So, what is the value of such a scheme, other than a wayang to increase votes for a bill?

Frankly, I do not understand what justification Shanmu gave that answer any of their initial objections, unless one take face value of what he said, which should never be the case to decide to support or reject a bill from being passed.

If one wants to talk about usefulness, maybe we should remove the MP scheme itself. How useful are the NMPs ? About as useful as the regular MPs apart from their constituency duties.

In interestingly the scheme was adopted because the PAP did not offer a dissenting or voices or views - in essence you are right.

Yes, and when he wanted to do another term, they rejected him.

A group of panel to decide the criterias for the next presidential election, is also the same Kakis to wayang that the ultimate criterions required of a president are "independent and fair view" of the ghost people and subjected to approval by the same person who selected those panel of kakis. Nothing complicate, cronies know how to perform a show to confuse 70% daft sinkies into believing there is "proper process".

Here in the US, the Americans all scoff at the so-called NMP scheme. The very name NMP contradicts the essence of democracy.

Yes. In fact the NMP was concocted to give a semblance of democracy. Amazing that well meaning people can still be taken in. We have to thank Shanmugam for showing up what a tepid brew this has turned out to be. If the NMPs ideas were a crock of nonsense, a seasoned lawyer like Shanmugam could have demolished them with relish. LKY would never have gone by the back door. He could tell you black was white but he did it upfront, as in his two egg in his kway teow speech.

We don't need Parliament at all. This place is an absolute monarchy in practice ...so might as well declare it as such.
