Singapore an anchor for US presence in Asia, says Obama

Singapore is an anchor for the US presence in Asia, said US President Barack Obama, outlining why the country is being given the rare honor this week of an official visit with a state dinner at the White House.

He told The Straits Times such visits are an opportunity to "reaffirm our ties and friendship with our closest partners around the world".

"This visit is an occasion to mark the 50th anniversary of our bilateral relationship with Singapore, which is one of our strongest and most reliable partners in South- east Asia," he said.

"I look forward to hosting Prime Minister Lee, whose friendship and partnership I appreciate very much and with whom I've worked throughout my administration."

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong arrived in Washington, DC on Sunday to begin his official visit. The state dinner will take place Tuesday.

White House state dinners are grand affairs and regarded as one of the highest diplomatic honors the US government can give. Singapore is only the fifth Asian country and the first from South-east Asia to be honored with a state dinner during the Obama presidency.

Obama added that the official visit reflects the important role Singapore plays in the US rebalance. "Singapore is an anchor for the US presence in the region, which is a foundation of stability and peace.

"Both our nations are committed to building a regional order where all nations play by the same rules and disputes are resolved peacefully and this visit will be an opportunity to continue deepening our cooperation on behalf of regional stability and prosperity," he said.

No need flags lah, a dozen of mushroom clouds would significantly do the job, and registered good memories in everyone's minds.

Flags is too civilized and symbolic, and can be called bluffs. Mushroom clouds leaves no doubts. Monumental historic records can not be altered.


DF-31A Edit

The PRC has developed an improved variant of the DF-31 called the DF-31A. This upgraded missile has a reported range of 11,200 km,[3] and was designed with MIRV capability to hold 3 to 5 warheads, each capable of a 20–150 kt yield, but is thought to be armed with only one warhead with penetration and decoy aids to complicate missile defense efforts.[1][1][4] The missile was shown to the public during the parade in Beijing celebrating 70 years since the end of World War II on September 3, 2015.[9] It can carry maneuverable reentry vehicles.[10]

DF-31B Edit

The PRC is developing another improved variant of the DF-31 called the DF-31B with an off-road TEL and MIRVs.[11][12] China has successfully tested it from a mobile launcher.[13] The missile's TEL features an extra pair of elevators near the aft of the missile unlike the TELs of the DF-31 or DF-31A, suggesting a heavier missile second and third stage than earlier variants.[14]
