Shaw had a very poor game and fitness was always an issue since he joined United. Where Smalling is concerned, his concentration during the game has always been in doubt. His seniority and experience at club and country level would have helped especially at a time where our center half options are limited.

My guess is they dun want to take the rap if United loses again. Playing through pain is nothing new in football. Fergie did it with Valencia , Rooney,Evra and many others. Still can't believe that Mou put Jones who didn't train as he was just coming back from an injury. It says alot about the character and mentality of some of these players.

Tactically, Mou did the right thing by playing Darmian and Young on the defensive wings to check on speedy wingers of Swansea, especially Barrow. Mou knew that the two center half were sitting ducks if they dun stop the crosses coming in from the left or right. I just hope they keep Darmian.
Now that you remind me - young did not make a single dribble nor cross in the entire match ! He just took the ball n pass it off. Really amazing for a winger / wing back.

Everton manager Ronald Koeman wants Manchester United winger Memphis Depay
By Mark Ashenden
Last Updated: 13/11/16 1:40pm
http://www.skysports.com/football/n...-wants-manchester-united-winger-memphis-depay

Everton look set to move for Memphis Depay in January after manager Rond Koeman revealed his interest in the out-of-favour Manchester United winger.

The Holland international has played just 20 minutes of Premier League football in four substitute appearances under Jose Mourinho this season, leading to speculation he could be allowed to leave Old Trafford in the new year.

Asked if he would be keen to sign Depay, Koeman told FOX Sports Netherlands programme De tafel van Kees: "I would like to have him.

"I think he is an interesting player. He has great individual qualities. He just needs to play games."

Depay, who cost United £25m from PSV Eindhoven in May 2015, is under contract until 2019.

Speaking ahead of United's Europa League clash in Turkey earlier in November, Fenerbahce coach and fellow Dutchman Dick Advocaat suggested Depay should change clubs.

Advocaat said: "Maybe he has to find another solution because he is too good to sit on the bench. I still believe in him, he has the right mentality, the right character to play for United.

"But there are so many options there. Regular playing time will help his progression."

Depay started his career with PSV and spent just over three years there before signing for United last year.

Jose Mourinho prepares to axe two stars as he lines up £25m bid for Serie A ace

JOSE MOURINHO has targeted £25m Napoli star Elseid Hysaj as he prepares to give Chris Smalling and Matteo Darmian the boot from Manchester United.

The Old Trafford chief has decided Smalling and Darmian do not feature in his long-term plans and will send them packing.

Albania international Hysaj is a specialist right-back but can also operate in the centre of defence.

He cost Napoli just £5m when he joined them from Empoli in 2015 but has just signed a new long-term deal with the Italian outfit, who will not be prepared to sell him on the cheap.

Italy star Darmian has fallen out with Mourinho after being frozen out this season, while the United boss has questioned Smalling’s attitude and commitment to the club.

Smalling is sidelined with a broken toe, while Darmian is not expected to feature against Arsenal on Saturday at Old Trafford.

Mourinho, meanwhile, has received an explanation from the FA about his £50,000 fine following comments about referee Anthony Taylor before United’s trip to Liverpool last month.

But a panel disagreed with Mourinho on the balance of probabilities.

Their report said: “Despite saying that he did not want to say anything, he contradicts himself by offering actual comment on the match official.

“This opinion, his opinion, was that he felt it would be diffi cult for Anthony Taylor to have a very good performance.

“The regulatory commission considered this opinion to bring an additional layer of pressure and implication onto the referee, which could have had a negative impact on the game.”

Manchester United face £20m Adidas Champions League blow

_92488539_gettyimages-483650196.jpg

Manchester United's £750m deal with Adidas is the most lucrative in the Premier League

Manchester United will lose more than £20m in sponsorship income from Adidas if they fail to qualify for next year's Champions League.

The German sportswear giant is in the second season of a 10-year, £750m deal.
After announcing a fall in first-quarter revenue, United said the annual payment will reduce by 30% if they do not reach Europe's flagship competition for a second successive season.

United are sixth in the Premier League, six points off the top four.
"There is a clause in the Adidas contract that applies if we are missing from the Champions League for two years in a row," said United's chief financial officer Cliff Baty.
"An example would be if we [were due to receive] £70m [in a given year], we would not receive £21m."

The sum is taken off each year of the contract, with the first payment covering the years for which the deal - which came into force in 2015 - has been active.
Baty said a failure by United to get out of the Europa League group stage this season would cost the club "single digit millions".

United's failure to qualify for this season's Champions League has already had an impact on their 2016-17 finances. First-quarter revenue - to 30 September - was down £3.4m (2.8%) to £120.2m, with matchday income down 32.3% to £16.8m. Profit was £6.2m.

The reduction in income is largely down to United playing three fewer home games than in the same period in 2015. Debt has risen 18% to £337.7m, due to the fall in the pound against the dollar since the Brexit vote.

Executive director Ed Woodward said: "Our financial results for this quarter reflect the impact of our non-participation in the Uefa Champions League."
The club's commercial revenue rose 4.4% to £74.3m, with overall revenue for the year expected to be between £530m and £540m.

United made four signings in the summer transfer window, including France midfielder Paul Pogba for a world record £89m and Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

They are sixth in the Premier League and through to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup but outside the qualification places for the knockout phase of the Europa League with two games remaining.

Venue: Old Trafford

TEAM NEWS

Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic serves a one-match ban.
United quartet Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini, Antonio Valencia and Wayne Rooney are all injury doubts.
Arsenal will assess Alexis Sanchez, who started for Chile on Tuesday despite suffering a hamstring problem earlier in the international break.
Right-back Hector Bellerin will be missing for four weeks because of an ankle injury, while Santi Cazorla remains out with an Achilles problem.

MOTD COMMENTATOR'S NOTES

Guy Mowbray: "So, the Jose-Arsene rivalry takes a different, red twist.
"There's too much history between the pair to go into here though, as there is between the clubs, so in previewing their latest clash it's best to echo Wenger's thought that what will make it 'is the quality of the game'.
"If United win, it'll not only be arguably the most surprising of the three possible outcomes, but a statement of them being in the thick of the fight.
"If it's Arsenal, they'll go top for at least a couple of hours, and make the chance of United being there at the end seem more of a dream than a hope."

WHAT THE MANAGERS SAY

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger on his record against Jose Mourinho teams: "You know, we didn't lose always. We have beaten them and there were many draws as well.
"I think I have won against every manager in the world during my 20 years here and I do not make of this game a competition between two managers.
"It's between two clubs and two teams and I think I can understand that people want to create controversy, but it's not that that makes the audience. What will make the audience is the quality of the game."

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

Manchester United

  • United could draw a third successive home league game for the first time since a similar run between February and April 1992.
  • A defeat would leave them on 18 points and equal their lowest tally after 12 matches of a Premier League season, set in 2004-05.
  • Jose Mourinho has never lost a Premier League game against Arsenal, winning five and drawing six of his 11 previous meetings with the Gunners.
  • Wayne Rooney has scored 14 times in all competitions against Arsenal during his career. He only has a better record against Aston Villa, with 15 goals.
  • Rooney scored his first Premier League goal against Arsenal, while his first league goal for United and his 100th Premier League goal also came versus the Gunners.
  • He needs two goals to equal Bobby Charlton as Manchester United's all-time top scorer with 249 goals in all competitions.
Arsenal

  • Arsene Wenger's only win in 15 previous encounters as a manager in any competition against Jose Mourinho came in the 2015 Community Shield (D6, L8).
  • Arsenal's only Premier League away defeat in 2016 came at Manchester United in February.
  • They have lost just one of their last 21 top-flight matches.
  • The Gunners are one of two Premier League sides yet to concede in the opening 15 minutes this season, along with West Brom.

Whatever he do just don't play Rojo or blind in centre. I suggest to have fosu. He needs a start and this is no better time.

Alex Sanchez will play and his speed will cause mayhem. All the defence players are too slow and too short. Maybe Carrick as CB ?

I think Mourinho will park the bus and hold for draw.

Manchester United forward Anthony Martial slips under the radar thanks to Wayne Rooney, but what has happened to the France international's form?

Anthony Martial has stalled following an impressive debut season with Manchester United CREDIT: ACTION IMAGES

Twelve months ago, boos circulated around Old Trafford when Louis van Gaal opted to bring off Anthony Martial in a Champions League tie against CSKA Moscow. Martial made way for Marouane Fellaini in the 66th minute with the game still goalless and plenty of Manchester United fans in the ground were quick to register their disgust at the decision.
By contrast, there was no great remonstration from supporters at Old Trafford on Saturday when Jose Mourinho opted to withdraw the France forward after 63 minutes against Arsenal with the game also goalless and instead bring on Wayne Rooney. Polite applause rippled around the stadium but there was not even the whiff of complaint. Once again, Martial had been ineffectual, on the periphery of the action, subdued, a shadow of the player who had enjoyed such an excellent debut season in a desperately under-performing team in the wake of his projected £61.6 million move from Monaco.
Even when he was flying last term, Martial seldom gave the impression of being particularly happy. That rather glum, blank look on his face has almost become a fixture. In good times, it can and has been read as the cold expression of a ruthless striker. In bad times, it will inevitably be construed as evidence of an unhappy player, so it would be unwise to read too much into his body language.
Having interviewed Martial with a handful of other reporters in the days before the FA Cup final triumph against Crystal Palace last May, he spent most of the conversation with his eyes fixed firmly at the floor. He does not exactly exude warmth but he should not be criticised for it, either. Everyone is different and no one really cares too much about such things when a player is making the sort of glittering contributions he was last term. Who could forget the stunning debut goal against Liverpool, the slick two-goal salvo away to Southampton or the last-gap winner against Everton in the FA Cup semi-final?

So where has that Martial gone? Sure, he was not consistently impressive last term, he tended to spring to life in bursts, but then that was to be expected from one so young. Yet, this season, United fans are barely even getting fleeting glimpses of Martial’s talents. There was a show-stopping strike against Stoke City last month and a penalty against Fenerbahce in the Europa League almost three weeks later but there has been very little else to get excited about.
With Arsenal missing their outstanding right back, Héctor Bellerín, and instead fielding Carl Jenkinson, who had last started a league game for Arsène Wenger’s side in May 2014, Saturday’s game presented a perfect opportunity for Martial to finally make his mark on this campaign. Yet whereas Antonio Valencia, United’s right back, asked countless questions of poor Nacho Monreal, surging up and down the flank, Jenkinson had a pretty easy time of it against Martial. There was a shot that Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech tipped over the crossbar but precious little else. Martial looked bereft of confidence, his lack of conviction marked.

Mourinho has been concerned for some time about Martial’s state of mind. While it has certainly not been the case with a lot of players, the United manager has adopted a softly-softly approach at times with the 20-year-old. On other occasions, he has put considerable pressure on the player before games to perform. Nothing, for the moment at least, seems to be working. Events in Martial’s personal life have certainly been a cause of concern for United’s coaching staff.
Some at the club talk about the Frenchman appearing distracted, worried his split from his partner, Samantha Jacquelinet, earlier this year and the fall-out from that has impinged on his football. France coach Didier Deschamps has noticed a change and dropped Martial from his squad for France’s games against Sweden and Ivory Coast this month while sounding a warning to the youngster. “His club coach expects more from him and so do I,” Deschamps said. “I have not forgotten what he has done or what he is capable of doing, but it’s up to him to make efforts to find his best form. He is not at the level where he should be.”
United paid Monaco an initial £36.3 million for Martial and will have to shell out an additional €10 million if he scores 25 goals in competitive matches for the club and two more €10 million payments if he makes 25 appearances for his country and is nominated for the Ballon d’Or. Having scored 17 goals for United last season, the club may have expected him to be close to that 25 goal target by now. Instead, he is marooned on 19 while he is 10 caps short of playing 25 games for France and may have to wait for a while yet before reaching the milestone.

United would gladly foot those bills sooner rather than later because it would show Martial on an upward curve. For now, though, he has, at best, stagnated and as the former United captain Gary Neville articulated over the weekend, he is fortunate Rooney has been deflecting attention from his dismal form. “He’ll be grateful the spotlight is on Rooney,” Neville said. “He’s got to produce a lot more. He doesn’t look happy at times, he needs more energy and dynamism in his game. He’s got to go more to get into the game, especially when the ball is not near him.
“I think Martial has gone under the radar and needs to start delivering because some of the performances I’ve seen have been nowhere near good enough, his work rate hasn’t been good enough as far as I can see.

“United signed a player 18 months ago for £55m and to be honest in the last six, seven, eight months he’s not delivered. He certainly has a lot of question marks. At the moment nobody is asking the question of Martial but he is £55 million.
“He now needs to start performing on the pitch because at £55 million, you think about the scrutiny the big players come under at this club – Wayne Rooney, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, [Ángel] Di María in the last 12 to 18 months – they’ve all been criticised heavily when they’ve not played well.”
Van Gaal famously declared that he had bought Martial, not for himself but for his successor. As things stand, though, the striker is not proving much of an inheritance for Mourinho.

Manchester United target Bayern Munich star David Alaba
as one of two defensive reinforcements

The Special One wants to further splash the cash to strengthen his squad at Old Trafford, having already spent over £150million

Jose Mourinho wants to strengthen his Manchester United squad with two defensive signings when the transfer window re-opens in January.

Mourinho wants assurances from United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward that significant funds are available to go for the players he has targeted.
Top of Mourinho's wish list is Bayern Munich's £40million-rated defender David Alaba, who is also wanted by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, who managed him in Germany.

Mourinho had Austria international Alaba watched twice by United scouts during the international break, with a view to making a January bid for the versatile 24-year-old.

Alaba has shone for Bayern under a succession of managers (Photo: A. Hassenstein)

Alaba plays as a left-back for Bayern, which has been a problem position for United this season, but can also operate in midfield.
Bayern are likely to rebuff any attempts to prise Alaba away from them in January, with Arsenal also said to be keeping tabs on the player who looks set to spark a huge bidding war.

United chief Woodward backed Mourinho to the tune of £150million in the summer, bringing in world record £89million signing Paul Pogba from Juventus, defender Eric Bailly from Villarreal, Henrikh Mkhitaryan from Borussia Dortmund and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Mourinho wants the same backing again in January, believing he needs to add two defenders of stature if United are to make the top-four and stand any chance of an unlikely title push.

United are also keen on Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, but the Reds are likely to have to fork out at least £30million to prise him away from the south coast club.

Alaba's Austria team-mate, Bayer Leverkusen's £20million-rated centre-back Aleksandar Dragovic, is also on Mourinho's radar as the United boss looks to bolster his defence.

Mourinho has questioned the mental toughness of United duo Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling, while fellow defenders Matteo Darmian and Marcos Rojo are also facing uncertain futures.

Against that backdrop, Mourinho has made new defenders his priority in January, with the United boss also set to lose centre-half Bailly – currently out injured – to the African Cup of Nations.

Great point. The pundits and the tabloids got it wrong. Why blame Rashford when Blind should be the player covering Rashford ie. if Oxlade gets past the latter which he did with ease. When Arse made the changes, just about everyone knew how they were going to play it in the minutes remaining. Not sure why Darmian was taken off. I thot he had a solid game at the left back.

The midfielders did a marvelous job in the middle and so did Valencia. I would have thought Wenger would have figured out United's weakness before the game but he should not be faulted for the poor performance of his players. Absolutely horrendous!!!

Man Utd: Zlatan Ibrahimovic contract will be extended by year - Jose Mourinho

_92624517_ibrahikvic.jpg

Ibrahimovic has scored six Premier League goals this season

Manchester United will extend Zlatan Ibrahimovic's one-year contract by a year, says manager Jose Mourinho.

The 35-year-old former Sweden international moved to Old Trafford on a free transfer in the summer, with the option of extending his deal for a second season.

He has scored eight goals in 17 games in all competitions this term.

Mourinho said: "We are going to execute the option of a second season. After that he can do what he wants."

Ibrahimovic said: "I feel in shape, feel fresh and good. If I feel like I do now, it will be a second year."

Ibrahimovic, who scored 62 goals in 116 games for Sweden before retiring from international football in June, left French champions Paris St-Germain at the end of last season.

The former Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona and AC Milan forward has won a trophy every season since 2001, including 13 league titles.

He will have a statue erected in Stockholm in his honour after being named Sweden's top player for a 10th successive year on Monday.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan could make a rare start for Manchester United in their Europa League tie against Feyenoord after being named in the squad.

Mkhitaryan, 27, has made only one appearance since his full debut against Manchester City on 10 September.

The forward was not included in the 18-man squad against Arsenal, with manager Jose Mourinho saying there was too much pressure on Saturday's league match.

Luke Shaw is also set to feature for the first time in a fortnight.
The England international was criticised by Mourinho over his apparent unwillingness to play through the pain barrier against Swansea in the 3-1 win on 6 November.

Eric Bailly (knee) and Chris Smalling (toe) are both still ruled out, while Marouane Fellaini remains a minor doubt with a calf injury.

But it is the inclusion of Mkhitaryan, a £26.3m summer signing from Borussia Dortmund, in the squad which could prove a turning point in the Armenia international's career at Old Trafford.

He has yet to complete 90 minutes for United this season, making only one Premier League appearance.

"I told him that he is going to be involved in the game," Mourinho said.
"He is trying. He is not happy but he is transforming his frustration in a good way, which is to close the mouth and work hard and try to adapt."

United are third in Group A, a point behind the Dutch team and Fenerbahce, with only one match left after Thursday.

Provisional squad: De Gea, Romero, Blind, Jones, Darmian, Fosu-Mensah, Rojo, Shaw, Carrick, Fellaini, Herrera, Mkhitaryan, Lingard, Mata, Pogba, Schneiderlin, Young, Ibrahimovic, Depay, Martial, Valencia, Rashford, Rooney

Jose Mourinho has warned Anthony Martial his chances are running out at Manchester United.
The Frenchman was dropped for Thursday night’s 4-0 drubbing of Feyenoord despite being fit and watched Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s fleet feet dazzle under the lights.
Martial has not hit the heights of a stunning first campaign at Old Trafford, scoring just once in the Premier League.

Anthony Martial has fallen from the heights of his spectacular debut vs Liverpool last season

It is understood Martial’s personal life and a lack of a summer break have affected his performances.

The 20-year-old was also left disappointed at United handing the No 9 shirt to Zlatan Ibrahimovic just as he was planning to trademark ‘Martial 9’.

Martial struggled in the draw with Arsenal last weekend and looks set to be benched after Mkhitaryan’s brilliance in the Europa League.
‘You have one opportunity, you have two, you have three - if you don’t bite then somebody comes and takes the bait,’ Mourinho said. ‘Anthony was OK for Feyenoord. I cannot play with 12 players.

‘The players have to win their positions. They are friends, they are colleagues who work together every day but in the end they compete between themselves to have more chance to play. Anthony played against Arsenal. Thursday was a moment to give Mkhitaryan a chance to start.’

Mourinho is also of the mind that Martial was more suited to Louis van Gaal’s style of play during a season he flourished following the surprising mega-money move from Monaco.
‘The way the team played last season - I’m not saying better or worse, just different - was probably more adaptive to Anthony,’ the Portuguese added.
‘He was probably more comfortable playing that way, at that intensity, that rate of ball possession and ball circulation.

‘Probably he also needs some time but in our squad, especially in these positions, we have Mkhitaryan, (Jesse) Lingard, (Memphis) Depay, (Juan) Mata, (Marcus) Rashford. These are probably the positions where we have more options.’
Martial’s malaise was further highlighted by Mkhitaryan’s magnificent display, starting for the first time since being hauled off against Manchester City on September 10.
Mourinho still claims the £26million summer signing from Dortmund still needs to learn the Premier League ropes and Zlatan Ibrahimovic commended his professionalism while frozen out.

Mourinho revealed Mkhitaryan had been training very hard in the build up to the Feyenoord tie

‘I know who Mkhi is, I see it every day in training, so hopefully he has showed everybody who he is and he now has the confidence to keep on doing that,’ Ibrahimovic said.

‘He’s a quality player, like every player in the team, but it’s up to the coach who plays in the team. He’s been training very hard. You just have to wait for your chance and, when you get your chance, you need to take it.
‘At the top level you need to deliver. If you don’t deliver, someone will come in and take your place.’
