Singapore falls in World Press Freedom Index for fourth consecutive year

Singapore has once again performed dismally in a global benchmark of press freedom, finishing 154th in the World Press Freedom Index.

It was the fourth consecutive year that Singapore has fallen in the rankings, ever since it finished 135th in 2012.

The Republic finished below countries such as Myanmar (143rd), Philippines (138th), India (133rd), Bangladesh (144th), and Malaysia (146th), in what was a poor year for media freedom in the Asia-Pacific region, said Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

The Index, which ranks 180 countries in order of the freedom allowed to journalists measures pluralism, media independence, the quality of legal framework and safety of journalists.

Countries like Japan, which was previously regarded as a regional model for press freedom, fell 11 places to 72nd.
RSF noted that in the year since the law on the protection of specially designated secrets took effect in Japan, “many media outlets, including state-owned ones, succumbed to self-censorship, especially vis-à-vis the prime minister, and surrendered their independence.”

South Korea also fell 10 places to 70th, as relations between the media and government have worsened under President Park Geun-hye.

RSF had scathing words for China, ranked 176th, where the Communist Party “took repression to new heights.” It added that journalists were “spared nothing, not even abductions, televised forced confessions and threats to relatives”. This was fuelled by Chinese President Xi Jinping’s “totalitarian view” of the media’s role.

“It is unfortunately clear that many of the world’s leaders are developing a form of paranoia about legitimate journalism,” said RSF secretary-general Christophe Deloir.

“The climate of fear results in a growing aversion to debate and pluralism, a clampdown on the media by ever more authoritarian and oppressive governments, and reporting in the privately-owned media that is increasingly shaped by personal interests.”

Dominating the top four in the Index are once again, Scandinavian countries. Finland topped the list, followed by Netherlands, Norway and Denmark.

Press freedom and expression has never been an issue of interest in Singapore. They are not considered important aspects of life. What is of concern to Singaporeans are - char kwey teow, laksa, chicken rice, and for the well-to-do, chilli crab. Other things like democracy, individual rights are for loser type liberals. Seen as social outcasts and failures!

Cheers!

True, true, for some strange reasons, the typical sinkies are happy enough at the lowest level of the Maslow's hierarchy of needs, they have no need for the other higher levels of needs  Press freedom??? what is that hah? As long as they have their char kway teow, etc., all the other things, can leave them to the PAP and the PA!

The strange reason is that many sinkies are impressionable and easily manipulated and some suffer from a delusion of grandeur. And that is why I stay away from most sinkies.

Singapore drops to 154th spot in World Press Freedom Index

By The Independent - April 20, 2016

Reporters Without Borders (RWB) has ranked Singapore at 154th spot in its latest World Press Freedom Index. The Republic dropped one notch from the 153rd place it held last year, and 14 spots from the 140th place it occupied a decade ago, in 2006.

RWB explained the ranking for Singapore as such:

“The Media Development Authority Act, the Films Act and the Broadcasting Act empower the Media Development Authority (MDA) to censor journalistic content, including online content. In April 2015, this government agency ordered the closure of The Real Singapore (TRS) news website because of content regarded as overly critical. Two of its alleged contributors were accused of “sedition,” which is punishable by 21 years in prison. Defamation suits are common in the city-state and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has personally brought prosecutions against bloggers.”

“It is unfortunately clear that many of the world’s leaders are developing a form of paranoia about legitimate journalism,” RWB secretary-general Christophe Deloire said. “The climate of fear results in a growing aversion to debate and pluralism, a clampdown on the media by ever more authoritarian and oppressive governments, and reporting in the privately-owned media that is increasingly shaped by personal interests.

“Journalism worthy of the name must be defended against the increase in propaganda and media content that is made to order or sponsored by vested interests. Guaranteeing the public’s right to independent and reliable news and information is essential if humankind’s problems, both local and global, are to be solved.”

Published annually by RWB since 2002, the World Press Freedom Index is an important advocacy tool based on the principle of emulation between states.

The thing about such sinkies is that they somehow think they are a cut above the rest like his ideas and interests and ways of thinking are esoteric in nature and only the elite will know but yet that isn't the case. People suffering from delusions of grandeur can be a pain but some aren't as bad as others. There are such ppl out there that somehow needs to drill in the fact that he's so great and has that pressing need to announce it since ppl don't give a shit about him so he goes the extra mile to announce it aloud and manipulates the process to announce how great he is:rolleyes:

180th is Eritrea. N Korea is 179th.

Eritrea! This country has some significance to me as it is the country that fought and gained independence from Ethiopia. The country in which it's last monarch where my nicksake is derived from. Make no mistake he is a direct descendant of King Solomon with the Queen of sheba
