RAMLE, Israel: Ehud Olmert, once feted for his peace efforts with the Palestinians, on Monday (Feb 15) became Israel's first former premier to serve jail time as he began a 19-month sentence for bribery and obstruction of justice.

With the nation transfixed and Israeli television broadcasting live, the 70-year-old entered the Maasiyahu prison in the central city of Ramle. He was escorted to the prison by officers of Israel's Shin Bet domestic security agency as a crowd of journalists watched from nearby.

A debonair man reputed to have a taste for fine cigars, Olmert's prison term closes a chapter in a long legal odyssey since he left office in 2009. The charges against him date to before his time as prime minister, to the years when he served as mayor of Jerusalem and economy minister, among other positions.

In a video message released on Monday morning before he began his sentence, Olmert maintained his innocence.

"You can imagine how painful and strange this change is to me, my family, loved ones and supporters," said Olmert, looking haggard and downcast. "I totally deny all the bribe charges attributed to me."

He added that "over the course of my extensive career I also made mistakes, though none of them were criminal by nature in my opinion. I'm paying a dear price for some of them today, perhaps too dear. With a very heavy heart, I'm accepting my sentence today. Nobody is above the law."

FOUR PAIR OF UNDERPANTS

Olmert was initially given six years' prison in May 2014 for taking bribes in the early 2000s in connection with the construction of Jerusalem's massive Holyland residential complex, but the sentence was later reduced to 18 months.

Last week, an Israeli court handed him an additional month for obstructing justice. He admitted to the crime as part of a plea bargain in that case. His prison sentence could still be extended further. The Supreme Court is debating his appeal against a third sentence of eight months for fraud and corruption.

The former leader of Israel's opposition Labour party, Shelly Yachimovich, said there were some positives to draw from Olmert's jailing. "The saddening fact that a convicted prime minister is entering prison this morning is testimony to the resilience of our democracy, the equality before the law and the elimination of corruption," she said on Twitter.

The Israeli Prisons Service says Olmert has been assigned to special block 10, "which is intended to house prisoners who for various reasons cannot be placed with the general prison population." He will join four other unidentified inmates in block 10, which has a maximum capacity of 18, and he will eventually have to share a cell.

Inmates are allowed to bring from home four pairs of underpants, four pairs of socks, two towels and two sweatshirts without hoods or lining. They can also bring with them one blanket (not a duvet), two sheets, a pillowcase, and religious books and articles.

LUXURY TRAVEL AND CIGARS

Born near the port city of Haifa, Olmert was elected to parliament in 1973 for the rightwing Likud party and served as mayor of Jerusalem from 1993 to 2003. He later joined the cabinet.

He broke away from the Likud with then-prime minister Ariel Sharon in 2005 to form the centre-right Kadima party and became premier the following year after Sharon suffered a massive stroke and slipped into a coma.

Olmert resigned as prime minister in September 2008 after police recommended he be indicted for graft, but he remained in office until March 2009, when Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu was sworn in to the post, which he has held ever since.

Olmert won international acclaim for relaunching peace efforts with the Palestinians at the Annapolis conference in the United States in 2007, but the corruption charges against him have come to define his legacy.

US financier Morris Talansky, a key witness in one of the cases, testified that Olmert gave him envelopes stuffed with cash and said much of the money may have been spent on luxury travel and fine cigars. The testimony sent shock waves through Israeli politics.

Before taking over as premier in 2006, Olmert was recognised as a key strategist behind many of Sharon's boldest moves, including Israel's 2005 withdrawal from Gaza and his decision to leave Likud and form Kadima. He was once seen as among the most promising politicians in Israeli history.

Culture Minister Miri Regev asked Israel's prison service for leniency for former President Moshe Katsav and businessman David Appel when she headed the Knesset Interior and Environment Committee. All three were members of the Likud party.

The request emerged from a report, obtained by Haaretz, on a July 2013 visit Regev paid the two at Ma’asiyahu Prison. The Interior Committee is responsible for overseeing the prison service.

According to the report, Regev asked the prison service why Katsav, who had been sentenced to seven years for offenses including rape and obstruction of justice, could not receive a furlough for Rosh Hashanah, which in 2013 fell on a Thursday and Friday.

At the time, Katsav was not entitled to a furlough for longer than 48 hours, and if he had gone home for the holiday he would have had to remain there for the Sabbath starting Friday evening. That would have meant leaving on Wednesday afternoon and returning after Shabbat, much more time than he was entitled to.

Regev’s request was denied by senior prison service officials, who believed that agreeing would draw flak from the public and media.

Regev also visited Appel, a former Likud activist, who was sentenced to three and a half years for bribery. According to the report, Regev asked when Appel could begin his rehabilitation and at what point his case could be brought to the parole board to request that a third of his sentence be reduced for good behavior. Appel was released in 2014 after his sentence was shortened by a third.

Regev’s office says the visit to the prison was part of her job at the time. But sources familiar with the report and Regev’s visit said it seemed Regev used her position as Interior Committee chief to visit the two men and see what could be done for them.

“These two prisoners aren’t the first that need their prison conditions examined,” said one source. “President Katsav is under supervision and Appel was also in an open, quiet wing where the living conditions are good. It was clear to everyone what the purpose of the visit was and why in the summary report it was written in the most clear way that Regev was waiting for answers.”

Two other prisoners Regev visited were crime bosses Asi Abutbul and Yossi Musli. At the time, Musli’s crime organization was in the midst of a power struggle with the Yitzhak Abergil crime group, a battle that took the lives of at least 16 people and required enormous police resources.

Regev’s office said: “As part of her job as head of the Interior Committee, Regev was responsible for issues relating to prisoners’ rights, so these were official visits in that capacity. During her visits to various prisons, Regev met with dozens of other prisoners in different wings of Israeli prisons, including surprise visits and a visit to the Neveh Tirtza women’s prison.”

According to the statement, “Regev made sure to deal with every request she got from prisoners as part of moral and professional obligation required by her public office.”

An Israeli labor court Wednesday found Sara Netanyahu, spouse of Israeli Prime Minister, guilty of employee abuse.

Jerusalem labor court convicted the Israeli first lady for abusing a member of her housekeeping staff. The court also found the Netanyahus’ environment unwelcoming for housekeeping staff due to the behavior of Mrs Netanyahu and her attitude towards staff.

According to the court, Mrs Netanyahu engaged in “irrational demands, insults, humiliation and outbursts of rage.”

Caretaker Meni Naftali sued Sara Netanyahu for the abuses. At a press conference Naftali claimed in one instance that she called him at 3am to complain that he had bought milk in a plastic storage bag instead of a cardboard pack.

He also indicated that in another case, she threw a vase of day-old flowers on the floor, scolding him that they were not fresh enough. Also according to the former member of the staff, Sara Netanyahu occasionally sounded racist.

Naftali received $42,000 in compensation and in court fee from the court.

The Netanyahu couple made no comments yet but Prime Minister’s office had previously rejected Naftali’s accusation calling them “outrageous.”

Sara Netanyahu made news on many occasions and is known for her lavish lifestyle. She first caught the limelight in the late 1990 when her husband ascended to Premiership. She was criticized for abusing and firing a nanny as well as meddling in state affairs.

Reports also say that another member of staff accused her of using abusive language and forcing her to shower several times a day to ensure a “sterile” environment.

The Netanyahus are also accused of using state funds to outfit their residence.

In another development, former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert last week admitted to obstructing justice in a series of graft-linked trials. He faces 18-month-jail sentence beginning from February 15 after he was convicted of bribery. He reportedly received a separate jail sentence for corruption and fraud.
