SINGAPORE - A 35-year-old engineer, who molested women using a ruse that he was in pain and needed help, was jailed for eight months on Thursday.

Tan Keng Leng pleaded guilty two charges of outrage of modesty; another count was taken into consideration during sentencing.

The court heard that on Dec 19 last year, Tan saw a 39 year-old woman at White Sands shopping centre and decided to follow her as he found her pretty.

He followed her back to her Pasir Ris condominium and they got into the same lift at about 3.50pm.

The woman pressed the button for the eighth floor while Tan pressed the one for the third floor.

As he was about to exit the lift on the third floor, Tan pretended to fall, inside the lift. He said "ouch" and touched his leg, as if in pain.

The lift doors closed and it continued up to the eighth floor.

Wanting to help him up, the woman took Tan's right hand and placed it over her shoulder.

But as they were exiting the lift, Tan suddenly used his left hand to grab the woman's breast.

Tan had used the same subterfuge earlier.

On Aug 24, 2013, at about 10.40pm, he got into a lift with another woman who was on her way home.

He pressed the button for the fourth floor while the woman pressed the one for the ninth floor.

When the lift reached the fourth floor, Tan suddenly fell down in the lift.

The woman asked if he was all right, and he replied that he had sprained his ankle.

She helped him out of the lift, and offered to help him to a chair near the lift landing.

While they were making their way to the chair, however, she felt his hand on her breast.

When they reached the chair, Tan gripped the middle of her bra.

She shouted for him to let go but he did not do so immediately.

When he sat on the chair, he also pulled the woman to sit on his lap.

She immediately jumped up and rushed back into the lift.

Tan also admitted to the third charge of outrage of modesty, which took place at a fourth floor lift lobby on Oct 2, 2013.

Assistant Public Prosecutor Daniel Marini said Tan's modus operandi, of following women home, was "akin to a predator stalking his prey".

He also said there were aggravating factors in Tan's ruse of pretending to fall and then "exploiting the kindness of his victims".

In sentencing him to eight months' jail, District Judge Lim Tse Haw said: "A stern message has to be sent that such offences cannot be tolerated."

Otherwise, the judge said, fewer people may be inclined to help others, worried that they may be similarly tricked.

Noting that Tan has no previous convictions, and that there was no "excessive violence" used, the judge spared him caning.

For using criminal force to outrage the modesty of a person, Tan could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned, or received any combination of such punishments.

SINGAPORE - A 23-year-old man had sex with a 14-year-old girl he had just met, a court heard.


Mohammad Khairulsabirrin Haris, who pleaded guilty to one of two charges, was jailed for 10 months on Thursday (Nov 19) for having sex with the girl on Oct 31 last year.


Assistant Public Prosecutor Daniel Marini told the court that the girl had gone to Changi Beach at about 7am that day.


Khairulsabirrin, who was then in a shelter along the beach with his father, invited her to join them.



While chatting with the victim, he learnt that she was a Secondary 3 student. They chatted until about 4pm before she decided to go home.


Khairulsabirrin offered to send her off. When they arrived at a handicapped toilet, he suggested going into the cubicle and she agreed.


He then committed the offence. They remained there for about 30 minutes to an hour and then went their separate ways.


The offence came to light when the victim's aunt lodged a police report last December stating that the victim had been talking about sex with unknown persons on Facebook.


Khairulsabirrin had unrelated convictions. He was last sentenced to six months' jail in January last year for resisting arrest and four weeks for impersonating a public servant.


Pleading for leniency, Khairulsabirrin said he had completed an architectural design course at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Nafa) and did not want to waste his future.



His sentence was backdated to his remand on Oct 21.


He could have been jailed for up to 10 years and lined for sexual penetration of a minor.​

A 20-year-old man was jailed for two weeks on Wednesday for cheating people and molesting a 16-year-old girl.


The court heard that Neil Christian Alejandro Casiano went to Orchard Road on Nov 9 this year to collect donations from passers-by.


The Filipino, who arrived in Singapore on a social visit pass on Oct 27 this year, claimed to be collecting the money on behalf of Childhope Asia, which is based in the Philippines.


He had printed two donor cards, two donor lists and a volunteer identification card bearing his name and photograph, on Nov 8.


The next day, at about 8pm, he stopped the 16-year-old girl outside Ngee Ann City. He showed her the fake Childhope Asia volunteer card and claimed that he was collecting money to help needy children.
He asked her to donate $10. When she declined, Neil took her aside and started to preach to her about religion.


After she donated $2, he asked her to write her name and sign on the donor list.


Then, at his request, the girl took a photo of them together using her mobile phone.


Suddenly, Neil hugged her from the side and brought his face very close to hers.


The girl managed to push him aside and left. She later related the incident to her mother and they reported it to the police.


Neil was arrested outside Ngee Ann City the same day.


He pleaded guilty to a charge of cheating and a count of outrage of modesty.


Another charge of outrage of modesty was taken into consideration during sentencing.


Neil admitted to holding both the girl's hands and kissing her right hand.


In all, he collected $70 from scammed victims. The money was for Neil's personal use.


In mitigation, Neil told the court that he was remorseful. He said he would like to go back home as soon as possible as his father died last Monday.


For cheating, he could have been jailed for up to three years and fined. For using criminal force to outrage he modesty of a person, he could have been jailed for up to two years, or fined, caned, or handed any combination of such punishment.

[h=1]Serial molester jailed 14 weeks for touching women on public buses[/h]13/11/2015


A 50-year-old cleaner was jailed for 14 weeks on Thursday (Nov 12) for molesting women on public buses.


Mohd Fuad Othman pleaded guilty to two counts of using criminal force to outrage modesty, while a similar charge was taken into consideration during sentencing.


The court heard that, at about 4.15pm on Sept 27 this year, Fuad boarded SBS bus number 16 and sat beside a 21-year-old woman, placing his bag on his lap.


During the bus journey, he kept shifting closer towardsher. Fuad brushed his shoulder against hers, and his arm also touched hers.


Fuad also used his hand, which he had concealed underneath his bag, to touch the woman's thigh, below her shorts.


The woman, who had also placed her bag on her lap, thought initially that it was his bag that was touching her.


Later, as she was about to alight from the bus, she lifted her bag and saw his hand on her thigh.


When confronted, Fuad denied touching her and claimed that he was sleeping.


The woman took a picture of him on her mobile phone and made a police report.


The next morning, at about 7.20am, Fuad sat beside a 35-year-old woman on SMRT bus number 854.


Both Fuad and the woman placed their bags on their laps.


During the bus journey, Fuad similarly moved his hand, which he had concealed underneath his bag, to touch the woman's thigh over her knee-length dress.


The woman later moved her bag to adjust her seating position and saw his hand on her thigh. She immediately shouted, and hit his hand with both her hands.


In a state of shock, she then shouted at him to alight from the bus.


Fuad was arrested on Sept 30 and admitted his offences to the police on the same day.


The third offence, which was taken into consideration during sentencing, involved him molesting a 20-year-old woman at about 10pm on July 12 on board SBS bus number 70.


In asking for a three-month jail term, Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Soo Tet told the court that Fuad was released from two weeks' imprisonment earlier this year, for similarly molesting another woman on a public bus.


He added that there were aggravating factors in the latest case, including the "brazen" nature of the offences, which were committed on consecutive days.


In mitigation, Fuad told District Judge Christopher Goh that he would like to apologise to his victims.


The judge jailed him for 14 weeks on each proceeded charge, with the sentences to run concurrently. The sentences were backdated to his date of remand on Oct 1.

A Malaysian chef who molested a young woman while sitting next to her on a Causeway Link bus was jailed for one month on Wednesday (Nov 11).


Ow Yong Chee Hao, 26, admitted stroking the thigh of the 21-year-old Malaysian woman and using his elbow to touch her waist area while travelling from Woodlands checkpoint to Queen Street on June 27.


A court heard that Ow Yong sat next to the woman after they had boarded the Causeway Link bus from Woodlands checkpoint that evening.


She noticed that he sat very close to her and felt his elbow touching her waist area.


When he noticed her using a WeChat application on her mobile phone, he showed her his phone with a typed message asking her for her WeChat account name. She ignored him but he persisted and kept bugging her.


Afraid, she gave him her WeChat account name. He immediately added her onto his WeChat and sat even closer to her. He used the back of his hand to stroke her left thigh and messaged her, asking why she was ignoring him.


She replied that she did not know him and told him not to touch her with his hand. But he ignored this and continued to molest her. He messaged her saying she looked sexy and that he wanted to hold her hand.


She told him not to do try anything or she would report him to the police.


Throughout the rest of the journey, he kept touching her thigh and grazing her waist area.


Her ordeal ended when the bus reached the Queen Street terminal.


After confiding in her friends, she lodged a police report. Ow Yong was subsequently traced through a telco screening and arrested.


He could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned or received any combined sentence.

SINGAPORE - A repeat offender who molested two women at a block of flats in Henderson Crescent was jailed for 20 months on Friday (Nov 20).


Muhammad Surya Mohd Hatta, 23, pleaded guilty to grabbing a 29-year-old woman's buttocks along the common corridor near the lift lobby at 7.39pm on Oct 20 and to a groping another woman, also 29,on the ground floor a minute later.


A district court heard that he had followed the first woman from Redhill MRT station to the lift lobby of the block. Both got into the lift and they alighted at the third floor.


Surya came from behind and used his hand to grab the woman's buttocks before fleeing down the stairs. He saw the second woman waiting for the lift. She did not see him and he put his hand under her dress and touched her.


Surya had similar convictions in 20 12 and 2014. He was last given 12 months' jail for molestation.


Surya, who was unrepresented, apologised for what he did. He said he committed the offences as he had not taken his medication to help him "relax''.


He said he was the sole breadwinner in the family and that he was in seven months' arrears for his rental flat.


District Judge Hamidah Ibrahim told him he was not supposed to commit any offences, let alone this type of offence.


"At the rate you are going, you will be looking at corrective training in future," she said.


He could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned or received any combined sentence.

[h=1]Teacher, 76, jailed for kissing 9-year-old pupil[/h]

A 76-year-old former relief teacher was jailed for four weeks yesterday for kissing a nine-year-old pupil, who he felt resembled a former girlfriend.


The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim, provided relief teaching for Chinese classes at a primary school from January 2013 until earlier this year.


He first met the girl in mid-2013 while teaching her Primary 3 class and took a liking to her, as he felt she resembled a former girlfriend he knew when he was 18.


The Chinese language teacher, who taught at various schools until he retired in 1975 , later kissed the youngster - who was eight at the time - outside the school hall.


In the middle of last year, while assigned as the relief teacher for her Primary 4 Chinese class, he asked the then nine-year-old to help him carry some books out of the classroom. As they passed the school library, he suddenly turned towards her and kissed her on the lips.


Despite feeling scared and uncomfortable, the victim did not tell anyone about the incident until earlier this year, after a third incident when the man was once again assigned to teach her class.


On this occasion, he passed her a piece of paper with his mobile phone number written on it, telling her that she could contact him.


She did not do so and confided in her mother, who contacted the school and lodged a police report.


The former relief teacher was convicted of one charge of outrage of modesty for kissing the girl in the middle of last year, while a second charge for the 2013 incident was taken into consideration during sentencing.


District Judge Mathew Joseph said the man had abused the trust placed in him as an educator and his position as a relief teacher.


"There is an almost seven-decade difference between your age and the victim's age," he said. "This makes the act much more reprehensible.


"What was most detestable was that the offence took place within the school's premises.


"This case perhaps illustrates the need for young children in school to be taught what are the inappropriate actions that can be made against them."

[h=1]Man serving time for molesting niece sentenced to 14 more months for molesting sister-in-law[/h]

A 67-year-old man, who is serving a 24-month jail term for molesting his underaged niece, was on Monday (Nov 23) sentenced to another 14 months for molesting his sister-in-law.


The man cannot be named to protect the victims' identities.


A district court heard that in 2011, the man's then 13-year-old niece reported to the police that she had been molested that same year.


During the course of investigations, her then 37-year-old aunt told the police that she had been molested by the man earlier, in 2005.


The prosecution proceeded on one charge and the man was convicted after a trial in September last year.


On Monday, the man pleaded guilty to the other charge which had been stood down.


The court heard that the woman in this case was admitted to hospital for migraine in late 2005.


At about 10am on Nov 29, the man insisted on massaging her on the hospital bed.


His wife, who is the woman's sister, was in the same room.


The man drew the curtain partially around his sister-in-law. He then put his hands under her hospital gown and massaged her entire body, beginning with her legs and moving up to her private parts and then to her breasts.


She was uncomfortable and embarrassed, but unable to resist or call out to her sister as she was drowsy and weak due to medication.


The victim did not tell her sister about what had happened, and her mother advised her not to jeopardise family ties by reporting the matter to the police.


Noting that his victim was hospitalised and in a "highly vulnerable state", Deputy Public Prosecutor Eunice Lau asked that a jail term in the range of 12 to 18 months be imposed on the man.


In mitigation, defence lawyer Sadhana Rai said he was remorseful and was committed to not massaging females again.


His intention in performing the "cultural" massage was to alleviate the victim's pain, the lawyer said. She asked for a jail term of between 9 and 12 months.


District Judge Liew Thiam Leng ordered that the man's 14 month jail term, which took effect from Monday, to run concurrently with his existing jail term.

[h=1]Man, 32, faces trial for raping his 56-year-old mother[/h]

A safety officer is facing trial in the High Court for raping his biological mother, 56, at their home.


The 32-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, faces one count of rape and two counts of outrage of modesty, all allegedly committed on Oct 4, 2013.


Besides allegedly raping her, he is also accused of restraining her while kissing her breasts and forcing her to touch him sexually.


The man, first charged in 2013, was originally scheduled to go on trial yesterday in an eight-day hearing.


However, the trial did not start. Instead, two legal heavyweights, Senior Counsel Harry Elias and Senior Counsel Chelva Rajah, turned up.


The trial was postponed for the man to decide if he wanted the two prominent lawyers - assigned to the case under the Law Society's Criminal Legal Aid Scheme - to represent him as defence lawyers.


If the accused agrees, they will be his third set of lawyers.


He was first represented by Mr Mathew Kurian and Mr Rajan Supramaniam, who were engaged by his brother. The two lawyers later discharged themselves.


The accused then applied for help under the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme. Mr Gino Hardial Singh, who came on board in March, no longer acts for him.


Asked about the senior counsel's involvement, a Law Society spokesman said both are strong supporters of the scheme.


Rape carries up to 20 years' jail, and caning or a fine. Molestation with restraint carries between two and 10 years' jail and caning; the other molestation charge carries up to two years' jail, with caning or a fine, or both. A date has yet to be set for the next hearing.

A 54-year-old school canteen stall operator who raped his young niece three years ago was yesterday jailed for 20 years.


The man, who cannot be named to protect the identity of his niece, now 17, pleaded guilty to one charge of rape, two charges of sexual assault and one charge of outrage of modesty.


Another three charges of rape, outrage of modesty and insulting the modesty of a woman were taken into consideration.


The girl's sexual abuse lasted from 2010 up until December 2012.


The High Court heard that on Dec 20, 2012, the man, knowing his wife was taking a nap in the master bedroom of their flat, went to his niece, then 14, in the living room.


He pulled down his shorts and forced his niece to perform sexual acts on him, before raping her.


He stopped when he heard sounds from the bedroom, and went to check if his wife - who is the girl's paternal aunt - was still asleep. Seeing that she was, the man returned to the living room and raped his niece again.


He stopped when he again heard sounds from the bedroom, and the girl took the opportunity to run out of the flat. Shortly after, she returned home, filled a cup with water, bleach and soap powder, and drank it in a bid to commit suicide.


When the girl started vomiting violently, the man dissuaded his wife from taking her to hospital, saying that it would result in a police report.


Instead, his wife took the girl to a private clinic and, as instructed by the man, did not tell the doctor what she drank.


A few days later, the man's wife, after knowing what had happened, offered the girl $50.


The man's actions came to light when the girl was queried on her school absences in January 2013. She told a school counsellor about the sexual abuses and a police report was made.


The first time her uncle abused her was when he violated her when she was 12 years old. In 2012, he molested her by squeezing her breasts and touching her buttocks.


In sentencing the man yesterday, Justice Lee Seiu Kin agreed with the prosecution that there were aggravating factors in the case. The man had violated his niece's trust, and possibly caused her long-lasting trauma.


In a victim impact statement read in court, the girl said she now fears males and has difficulty trusting others. She also has nightmares and flashbacks to the incident.


The man was spared caning due to his age.

[h=1]Foreign worker jailed eight months for molesting train commuter[/h]

A foreign worker who molested a woman on board an MRT train was sentenced to eight months' jail on Thursday (Sept 17).


Islam Md Mohidul, 28, admitted touching the 25-year-old woman in the train, which was going towards City Hall, at about 7.30am on June 26 this year.


A court heard that Islam, who was employed at a worksite near City Hall MRT station, boarded the train at Kranji MRT station . The victim boarded at Sembawang. She later sat on Islam's right and began reading some documents. Shortly after, she fell asleep.


Islam was attracted to her and decided to take advantage of her falling asleep.


As there were then many commuters, he pretended to cross both his arms over his chest, when he had, in fact, slipped his left hand under his right elbow so that he could surreptitiously reach over to the victim's left breast.


He molested her. When she did not wake up, he became bolder and continued to rub her more forcefully, even moving on to her nipple to rub it for a few seconds.


The victim woke up and he quickly retracted his hand. She shouted and told him off for touching her. He apologised, and claimed it was an accident.


The angry victim then used her mobile phone to take his photograph. She later made a police report.


Islam was arrested in an ambush at Kranji station on July 15. He initially feigned ignorance but eventually admitted to the offence.


In mitigation, he said he was remorseful and promised not to offend again.


District Judge Ng Peng Hong said a heavy sentence had to be meted out, and the court had to send a strong signal to people like him that such behaviour on public transport, especially in MRT trains, could not be tolerated.


Islam, whose sentence was backdated to Aug 27, could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned or received any combination of these punishments.

[h=1]Man who sexually abused stepdaughter, six, gets 8 years and 12 strokes[/h]

A former security officer who sexually abused his six-year-old stepdaughter was jailed for eight years and ordered to be given 12 strokes of the cane on Tuesday.


The 38-year-old pleaded guilty to sexual penetration of a minor without her consent in mid-2012. Two other charges of using criminal force to outrage her modesty were taken into consideration.


Deputy Public Prosecutor Claire Poh said the accused and the victim's mother, aged 31, were married around May 2011. The victim was then about five years old and called him "Daddy" or "Max".


The couple's relationship deteriorated and they were divorced in September 2013. The security officer however continued to live with the victim and her mother until around February 2014.


Investigations revealed that sometime in mid-2012, the accused touched the victim's private parts and violated her with his finger while playing with the child in the living room. Her mother was asleep in the unit at the time.


He subsequently bought the child clothes and told her not to tell anyone about what had happened.


Sometime in May last year, the mother brought the victim to KK Women's and Children's Hospital as the child had some discharge from her private parts. She was diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease but it is not conclusive whether she had contracted Chlamydia from the accused.


"What is important is that he had, by his actions, callously exposed the victim to the risk of such diseases," said Ms Poh.


Highlighting aggravating factors, she said the accused was in a position of trust and authority. He started to sexually exploit the victim for his own sexual gratification barely a year into his marriage.


She said the victim, an extremely vulnerable person, had to endure a prolonged period of sexual abuse spanning across a period of two to three years.


The accused, who had no lawyer, pleaded for leniency. He said he totally lost control of his actions at the time and will not commit any offence. He could have been jailed for up to 20 years and liable to fine or to caning.

[h=1]Auxiliary cop gets jail, cane and fine for groping wife's sister and teenage cousin[/h]

SINGAPORE - A 33-year-old man took advantage of his position in the family to repeatedly molest his wife's sister and teenage cousin, sometimes in the presence of other family members.


The former Changi Airport auxiliary policeman was sentenced to 11 months' jail, three strokes of the cane and a $1,000 fine on Wednesday for molesting the two women over a span of two years.


He pleaded guilty to three charges of outraging modesty and one of insulting modesty. Three other charges of outraging modesty were taken into consideration.


He had repeatedly groped his sister-in-law, an administrative assistant who was dating his younger brother.


When the family stayed overnight at an East Coast chalet in October 2013 to celebrate his daughter's first birthday, he waited until the 28-year-old was asleep before sliding his hand into her clothes to touch her breast and genitals.


Both his daughter and the victim's four-year-old daughter were lying between them, but this did not deter him from reaching over them to commit the act. The victim swept his hand away but said nothing.


When the family returned to the chalet in January 2014 for another celebration, the culprit again waited for nightfall to fondle the victim's breast as she lay sleeping beside his brother. The victim woke up and again struck his hand .


In 2012, he also ambushed his wife's teenage cousin, whose family was living with his in a Bukit Panjang flat.


A court heard that as the 16-year-old student left her bedroom, the accused suddenly smacked her buttock with his hand. The victim fled to the far side of a dining table and demanded to know what he was doing.


He persisted in asking to touch her buttock although she rejected his advances; finally she left the house out of fear.


Later that year, the culpritcaught a glimpse of the teenager changing in her bedroom late at night, and sent her a text saying that he had seen her butt twice. She deleted the message immediately when she saw it.


Neither the culprit nor his two victims can be named to protect the latter's identities.


Deputy Public Prosecutor Kenneth Kee called for a sentence of no less than 12 months' jail and three strokes of the cane, saying the accused's offences were "an abuse of trust", as he had committed the acts on members of his extended family over an extended period of time.


For each count of using criminal force to outrage the modesty of his victims, the culprit could have been jailed for up to two years, fined, caned, or sentenced to any combination of the above.


For insulting the modesty of his wife's cousin, he could have been jailed up to one year, fined, or both.

A 33-year-old unemployed man who had sex with a minor when she was drunk was jailed for two years yesterday.


Oh Boon Yaw was 18 years older than the girl when he had sex with the drunken 12-year-old in a chalet in East Coast Parkway some time in August 2012.


He pleaded guilty on Sept 28.


Assistant Public Prosecutor Puvaneswari Sandirasekaran said Oh and the girl befriended each other in a LAN online gaming outlet at Bukit Timah Shopping Centre during the June school holidays in 2012. She told him her age.


After a while, they met up often and began a relationship. About two months later, the girl, Oh and some of their friends went to the chalet. They spent the night drinking alcohol and playing games.


Assistant Public Prosecutor Puvaneswari Sandirasekaran, who sought a prison sentence of at least 24 months, said the victim was young and vulnerable. She also said there was a substantial age gap of about 18 years between the duo, and there was no consent given to have sex.


Both the girl and Oh were drunk that night. Oh slept beside her on the same bed while the friends slept on the other bed in the same room.


Oh became aroused and undressed her. She woke up and saw him getting up on top of her. She did not stop him as she was drunk and sleepy.


Ms Puvaneswari, who sought a prison sentence of at least 24 months, said the victim was young and vulnerable. She also said there was a substantial age gap of about 18 years between the duo, and there was no consent given to have sex.


She highlighted that Oh in this case was "opportunistic" as he had committed the offence when the girl was drunk and unable to give her consent.


"The prosecution is not disputing that they were in a relationship at the material time. But this is a strict liability offence where the law protects and acts like a blanket for the young girls below the age of 16, to ensure that men do not take advantage of them as they are still immature in making the decision of having sex,'' she said.


Oh's lawyer, Mr Chu Hua Yi, who was assigned under the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme, said in mitigation that Oh had a difficult childhood and was abused by his father when he was disciplining him.


Oh became very reclusive, kept to himself and got bullied in school. He dropped out of the Institute of Technical Education and did not have anyone to talk to about his feelings, until he met the girl, he said.


Mr Chu said Oh fell in love with her. He added that when their relationship ended in 2012, Oh used a penknife to cut his palm and suffered permanent disability.


In her testimonial, Oh's younger sister recalled there was one night when the whole family was trembling with fear when the father was caning Oh using a bundle of canes, among other things. He grabbed Oh by his hair, rammed his head against a wall, held a chopper against his face and shouted furiously.


Oh, who was in tears as he was led away to begin his sentence, could have been jailed for up to 20 years and liable to a fine or to caning for having sex with a person under the age of 14.

An unemployed man who committed an indecent act with a girl and made her perform oral sex on him was jailed for 22 months on Tuesday .


Muhammad Hafiz Zainuddin, 24, admitted to two out of five charges.


A court heard that in early March this year, the victim, aged 13, logged on to her Facebook account and discovered a friend-request from Hafiz, who used the nickname, Ardy Harrison, and whose profile consisted of photographs of a Caucasian man.


She accepted the friend request, and they began to chat. She told him her full name and that she was studying in a primary school in the east of Singapore. He said he was 18.


On March 23, the girl was at Nex shopping centre when she logged on to her Facebook account at a shop with iPads on display. She chatted with Hafiz, who asked her to meet him at Marsiling MRT station. At first she was reluctant to meet him but agreed as she was curious to find out what he looked like.


After meeting her at Marsiling MRT station, Hafiz took her to Block 162 Woodlands Street 13. They walked up to the sixth floor. There, he coaxed her into performing some sexual acts on him. They then parted.


A week later, she was with a friend at the same shop in Nex shopping mall when Hafiz chatted with her over Facebook. He asked her to meet him but she told him she could not as she was with her friend. He asked her to bring her friend along but she declined.


Pleading for leniency, Hafiz said he was remorseful and promised not to re-offend. He also wished to apologise to the victim and her family.


Deputy Public Prosecutor Michael Quilindo asked the court to impose sentences above the benchmark, pointing to the girl's age.


District Judge Liew Thiam Leng, who backdated Hafiz's sentence to Sept 22, noted the wide age gap between the parties. He said the facts showed Hafiz was instrumental in encouraging the victim in this case.


Hafiz could have been fined up to $10,000 and jailed for up to five years for the indecent act. For sexual penetration of a person under 16 years, he could have been jailed for up to 10 years and fined.

SINGAPORE - A 23-year-old man had sex with a 14-year-old girl he had just met, a court heard.


Mohammad Khairulsabirrin Haris, who pleaded guilty to one of two charges, was jailed for 10 months on Thursday (Nov 19) for having sex with the girl on Oct 31 last year.


Assistant Public Prosecutor Daniel Marini told the court that the girl had gone to Changi Beach at about 7am that day.


Khairulsabirrin, who was then in a shelter along the beach with his father, invited her to join them.


While chatting with the victim, he learnt that she was a Secondary 3 student. They chatted until about 4pm before she decided to go home.


Khairulsabirrin offered to send her off. When they arrived at a handicapped toilet, he suggested going into the cubicle and she agreed.


He then committed the offence. They remained there for about 30 minutes to an hour and then went their separate ways.


The offence came to light when the victim's aunt lodged a police report last December stating that the victim had been talking about sex with unknown persons on Facebook.


Khairulsabirrin had unrelated convictions. He was last sentenced to six months' jail in January last year for resisting arrest and four weeks for impersonating a public servant.


Pleading for leniency, Khairulsabirrin said he had completed an architectural design course at Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Nafa) and did not want to waste his future.


His sentence was backdated to his remand on Oct 21.


He could have been jailed for up to 10 years and fined for sexual penetration of a minor.

A self-professed alternative healer sexually assaulted a woman under the guise of providing legitimate treatment for her infertility.


Koh Nai Hock, better known as Doc Bob Koh, was convicted last month of 14 charges of sexual penetration of the businesswoman, then 40, on seven occasions between Nov 1 and Dec 25 in 2010.


Yesterday, the 64-year-old father of three was sentenced to seven years' jail. He is out on $60,000 bail, pending his appeal.


District Judge Hamidah Ibrahim had disagreed with his defence that what he had done were legitimate methods to treat infertility. She found that he knew that they were not legitimate methods and were clearly sexual in nature.


The woman, now 45, first sought treatment from a gynaecologist for infertility in August 2010, and was due to go for surgery to remove an endometriotic cyst in February 2011.


In late 2010, she came to know Koh, who said he could treat her infertility and could shrink her cyst using non-surgical methods.


The victim and her husband paid him $20,580 for a three-month treatment package. She attended eight sessions with Koh: six at Grand Mercure Roxy Hotel in East Coast Road, one each at her home and Ibis Hotel in Bencoolen Street.


During the sessions at the East Coast Road hotel on Nov 1 and 2, Koh asked her husband to leave the hotel room. Koh was alone with her when he committed the offences.


These were repeated each time, except the last session, when the victim, who went to Ibis Hotel alone, felt nauseous and shocked after the "treatment''. Koh had kissed her on her cheek and told her she was "so cute". He gave her a hug, ostensibly to straighten her spine, performed "lymphatic drainage" on her breasts and pressed her rib cage so hard that she screamed in pain.


She declined his offer to use his mouth to suck out "negative energy" from her cleavage.


She reported the case to the police in February 2011. In May the same year, she went to a gynaecologist and later conceived successfully.


Deputy Public Prosecutors Lin Yinbing and Michael Quilindo sought a jail term of 10 years to deter Koh and would-be offenders. They argued that he had practised deception and fear-mongering on the victim to allow him to sexually violate her.


Koh still faces a Health Ministry summons for advertising his treatment services online between May and July 2008. The case is fixed for a pre-trial conference on Dec 11.


The maximum penalty for sexual penetration is 20 years' jail, and a fine or caning.

A roti prata stallholder offered a friend who had come out of prison for drug-related offences not only a job but also a place to stay in his flat.


But the man, now 57, abused the stallholder's trust and betrayed his hospitality and charity by sexually abusing his seven-year-old son.


The accused chose to act because the child, who was in primary school, was frequently alone at home with him. On one occasion in December 2009, he forced the victim to perform oral sex on him.


He was jailed for six years yesterday after pleading guilty to one of three charges . Neither the accused, a married father of three, nor the victim can be named.


Assistant Public Prosecutor Dillon Kok told the court the accused worked for the victim's father at his roti prata stall after he came out of prison in 2009.


While he was home alone with the victimin December that year, he took the boy into a bedroom and committed the offence. The boy was too frightened to resist. After that, the accused gave the boy $5 and warned him not to tell anyone or the accused would have a "big fight'' with the victim's father and there would be a "big problem'' at home.


Sometime in late January 2010, the accused moved out of the flat.


Mr Kok said the accused's act came to light only in mid-2013 on an occasion when the victim asked his younger sister to stroke him.


The parents informed the police as well as the Ministry of Social and Family Development.


Citing several aggravating factors, Mr Kok said a jail term of at least six years was warranted to deter sexual predators who preyed on young, vulnerable victims.


He said the accused had sexually abused a child to satiate his lust, an act of the lowest level of depravity.


"When offenders commit such reprehensible crimes, they cannot expect to get away lightly. A stern and unequivocal message must be sent that there is no place in our society for such repulsive conduct,'' he said.


District Judge Jasvender Kaur said the fact that the accused had betrayed his friend's trust and the age of the victim were severe aggravating factors. She noted the duration of the act was about 20 minutes, and further, he had repeated the offence on two other occasions.


"The offence also had a lasting effect on the young victim,'' she said.


The accused, who has Parkinson's disease, could have been jailed for up to 20 years and fined for sexual penetration of a minor.

SINGAPORE — Over supplementary tuition in history, the 30-year-old form teacher fell in love with his student. She was 13 then, and he started to court her during the school holidays in June 2003 by asking her to assist him in marking papers.


Later that year, the teenager’s father passed away, and the teacher continued to chase her, paying for all her expenses and feeding her lines about how she had caught his attention in class. Both parties cannot be named due to a court-imposed gag order.


Today (Dec 9), the 42-year-old teacher — who has been suspended by the Ministry of Education — pleaded guilty in court to six charges, including committing an obscene act with a child, and using a recording device to film the girl and her mother showering. Another 36 charges will be taken into consideration during sentencing.


The court heard that in 2004, the accused told the teenager that he was undergoing divorce proceedings and his wife had booted him out of their marital home. Hence, he started renting a room in her house for S$150 to S$200 a month.


Over the next few years, the pair had numerous sexual encounters at home and in rented cars and hotel rooms. The teenager tried to end their relationship twice in 2006 and 2007, but he only consented to the split in 2008.


After breaking up, she discovered that the teacher had been filming her bathing on the sly. He begged for forgiveness, and she relented. But in 2013, she discovered video footage of their trysts, as well as of her in the toilet, among his belongings. The cops were called, and he was arrested on Aug 23, 2013.


In court today, Deputy Public Prosecutor Timotheus Koh called for a jail term of five to seven years, saying the man had grievously violated the trust and confidence that his student and her mother had in him.


“The accused person actively courted the victim, knowing full well that she was 13, and that she was his student. He clearly crossed the line,” he said.


Rebutting this, defence lawyer Leslie Gregory Robert said the pair were in a “stable” relationship, and this was not a “run-of-the-mill sexual predator” case.


A 2009 email exchange between the two was tendered before the court. The teacher wrote: “I don’t know why but the more I want to forget you… the more I feel for you and think of you… But I also know that I have to accept that as our love has been a forbidden one…”


In her response, the girl said: “Forbidden love is the right word to use… I am glad that we spent five years together. Only when you meet your next partner, you will realise that actually there are a lot of better options.”


His case will be heard again on Dec 30.


In response to TODAY’s queries, a Ministry of Education spokesperson said the teacher “has been suspended from duties”.


“We do not tolerate educators who misconduct themselves. Educators are expected to uphold the highest professional standards,” the spokesperson added.

They had sex in hotel rooms, rented cars and at her home, where he was a tenant, a district court heard on Wednesday (Dec 9).


He secretly filmed the girl showering and their sexual trysts as well.


She only discovered the videos in his mobile phone when he moved out in 2013, and she made a police report in August that year.


Now 42, the accused, a divorcee with two teenage children, was 30 when he first had sex with the girl in 2003. He cannot be named due to a gag order.


On Wednesday, he admitted to six charges, including two of carnal connection with a girl below 16. Another 36 charges will be taken into consideration.


Deputy Public Prosecutor Timotheus Koh said the accused became close to the girl when he gave her free tuition in history in 2003.


He courted her and got her to help him mark papers. He told her that he loved her, convinced her that they could be in a relationship and paid for all her expenses.


In March to April 2004, he rented a room from her mother, who was in financial difficulties, as he was undergoing divorce proceedings and had nowhere to stay. DPP Koh said the pair had many sexual encounters between 2003 and 2007.


She had tried to end the relationship in 2006 but only succeeded in 2008. However, he continued to live in the flat until mid-2013.


In July 2013, the victim and her mother asked him to move out so that the girl's brother could move in after his marriage. The girl was making a check when she discovered the video recordings. The man had also taken two videos of the girl's mother in the shower.


Defence lawyer Leslie Gregory Robert said in mitigation that this was not a run-of-the-mill sexual predator case.


"My client genuinely was in love with her," he said.


In an e-mail the victim, now 25, sent to his client, she said she had not regretted meeting him and appreciated all he had done for her.


DPP Koh is seeking a total of five to seven years' jail, saying the accused had grievously breached the trust and confidence placed on him by not only the victim but also her mother and the school.


"The accused had actively courted the victim knowing full well that she was not only underage but was also his student. He had clearly crossed the line,'' he said.


District Judge Siva Shanmugam will sentence him on Dec 30.

Accused wants to be male and had used a fake identity to 'marry' two women in Indonesia

A 39-year-old who was born a female but identifies with a male persona admitted yesterday to sexually abusing an underage girl who lived in the neighbourhood.


Before this, Zunika Ahmad had even "married" two women using a bogus identity. She pleaded guilty in the High Court to six charges of sexual penetration of a minor and one charge of sexual exploitation of a young person.


Another 14 similar charges will be considered when she is sentenced.


Between March 2012 and December 2013, Zunika had regular consensual sex with the girl, who was between 13 and 14 years old. The girl, now 16, cannot be named due to a gag order. Zunika used external aids to abuse the girl.


Diagnosed with gender dysphoria, Zunika dresses and behaves like a man and speaks with a masculine voice. The court heard that she had a "strong desire" to be male and disliked her female characteristics.


As a child, she preferred boys' clothes and toys. When she started menstruating and developed breasts, she felt betrayed by her own body. In her teenage years, she cut her forearms when her mother forbade her to go for a sex-change operation.


In her desire to be male, she stuffed socks down her underwear when she was 17. She also "married" two women who believed that she was an Indonesian man.


In 2001, the first woman, then seven months into a relationship with Zunika, got pregnant when she had a fling with another man.


Not realising that it was impossible, she told Zunika that "he" was the father. They wed in 2002 after Zunika obtained a fake Indonesian passport. In 2008, Zunika "married" the second woman. Both weddings were held in Indonesia.


The family of four lived in an HDB flat that was under the name of the first wife and her daughter.


Both "wives", who were in court yesterday, did not know her true identity until March last year, when the victim told police she had sex with "a 37-year-old male", who turned out to be Zunika.


Zunika hid the fact that she was physically female from her partners. She had sex in the dark or used a pillow or comforter to block their views, Deputy Public Prosecutor Dwayne Lum told the court.


She also told her "wives" that in her culture, women could not touch or see their husband's private parts.


In 2011, the victim and her siblings, who were abandoned by their mother, started going to Zunika's flat to hang out with her "daughter".


Zunika's lawyer, Ms N. Sudha Nair, said that her client came across the girl's Twitter post in which she expressed interest in Zunika. When Zunika asked her about it, the girl confessed her feelings.


In January 2012, Zunika kissed her on the cheek. The next month, Zunika initiated a sexual act on the 13-year-old.


In March 2012, the girl agreed when Zunika asked if she wanted to have sex. They had sex until December 2013, when Zunika put a stop to the affair out of guilt.


In March last year, the girl told her family about the acts after a quarrel with Zunika. The matter was reported to the police.


Deputy Public Prosecutor John Lu sought eight years' jail, arguing that Zunika had abused the trust reposed in her by the girl's father.


But Ms Nair said Zunika did not set out to deceive the girl as she had always lived as a man; neither was she a paedophile.


Ms Nair argued for less than three years' jail so that Zunika can go for sex reassignment surgery and rebuild her life with her two partners and "daughter".
