Poster of PAP’s Holland-Bukit Timah team displayed beside Chinese altar

Photo: SDP facebook pageThe Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) were out on their outreach activities when they came across a strange thing – the sight of mini-posters of the People’s Action Party’s team for Holland-Bukit Timah GRC.

What was peculiar about this was that the posters were pasted on the wall of a Chinese altar.

“We were doing our walkabout this morning at Ghim Moh and saw miniature posters of the PAP Holland-Bt Timah team pasted all over the food centre – even at an Taoist altar,” the SDP posted on its Facebook page.

“The candidates’ photos were placed to the left and right of the deity where believers prayed and placed their joss sticks (the poster on the left is partially obscured by the candlestick). The SDP team is also campaigning for every vote but, please, let’s have some decency and not paste our photos where people worship.”

The SDP says it has also alerted the Election Department (ELD) to the incident. The ELD says it is looking into the matter, and whether the display of the mini-posters has breached elections rules.

“Show some respect,” the SDP said in its Facebook post.

This is the second time that the placement of PAP posters have raised questions of their legality

Questions had also been raised by members of the public and the political parties on the island-wide posters bearing the face of Lee Hsien Loong, in constituencies which Mr Lee is not contesting

The ELD later said that this did not contravene the Parliamentary Elections Act regarding election advertising.
